How do you like to unwind after a long day of working? These days I’m spending some of my time at school in a very noisy busy environment and being able to come and sit in the quiet in my studio, even for a short time, is very relaxing. The beauty with pencils is being able to pick them up and have them ready to go with no mess to clean up afterwards! I also really like to listen to music when I draw, except when I’m recording tutorials of course! #timetounwind #timetodraw #drawingisrelaxing #colouredpencilart #coloredpencilartist #elephantdrawing
So how can you use some Scotch magic tape and an eraser guard to help you draw grass? After my posts earlier in the week, I have received a few messages asking me how it actually works. So here is a quick video showing you!You don’t always need to have fancy equipment to be creative, sometimes the simple things can be more effective. I love this method alongside using a Slice Cutter for drawing this type of subject matter. Have you ever given this a try? Or do you fancy giving it a go yourself? After drawing this, I can’t wait to do some more grass again soon. Happy drawing!Izzy x#colouredpencils #colourpencilart #colouredpenciltips #coloredpencilsart #eraser #scotchmagictape #eraserguard #drawingreel #learntodraw #elephantdrawing #ukcps
You don’t have to draw every blade of grass to create the effect of it. Just a few choice strands mixed with some variation of tonal values, blended edges and some contrast and hey presto it’s not as complicated as you may think.Sometimes we can spend so long thinking about not being able to draw something that actually we get in our own way. Remember to take it one step at a time and then it won’t seem so overwhelming. I was trying to pick some music for this reel and my twins were rather taken with this one, so that’s what I went with. Hopefully you enjoy it too! Trunks are probably my favourite part of an elephant to draw with all that texture. It can look a little overwhelming to start with but I like to break it down so I just take it one step at a time. First of all, I like to mark in where those dark grooves are before I build up the layers as it helps to give it some sort of structure. I’m using colour pencils on Watercolour paper.
Call me weird, but White Tac used for sticking pictures to walls, makes an amazing eraser with colour pencils!! It’s so kneadable and soft it’s a great tool for dabbing to lift out highlights and leave some texture. Have you ever tried it?What erasers do you like to use?Happy drawing! It’s been a tough couple of weeks but sitting down to draw is something that really helps me to feel calm and relaxed. What do you do to relax? I also found a tucked away relaxation colouring book this weekend which I’ve been doing with my children. They’ve loved it and my daughter commented on how it made her feel so calm. A great activity that we can all sit together and do. I would highly recommend it! Happy drawing! I haven’t been able to pick up my pencils for a few days and I’m really missing the therapeutic quality that they hold. I find building those layers so calming, do you feel like that? Happy drawing!Izzy x#colouredpencils #coloredpencil #colorpencildrawing #colorpencils #colorpencilartist
It’s never too late to learn!
Were you ever told that you were rubbish at art? Or that you shouldn’t do art, that you should be perusing academic subjects? Today I want to dispel this myth that it’s too late to learn to draw. Let me know in the comments your experiences of art and school.
A story about a comment on YouTube
Hello, I just wanted to show my face on here as it’s been a while and share a little story of something that made me smile!
One of my favourite parts to draw on animals is the ears. I think it’s the lovely soft hair and how the lighter hairs overlap the dark inner ears. The beauty of drawing them on Pastelmat means I can add the lighter hairs over the top of what I’ve drawn rather than having to save the lighter paper from the start. Who else loves drawing soft fluffy ears? Happy drawing! Izzy x. #pastelmatpaper #colouredpencildrawing #colorpencilsdrawing #redpanda
Red panda is incoming! Super happy to be back working on this one in between entertaining my twins who are on Easter hols. Aiming to do a little a day, as slow and steady wins the race! 🐢 🥇 So today I’ve been layering up that very dark area of red panda and would love for you to take a guess as to how many layers you think it took me. Leave your guesses in the comments and check back tomorrow to find out the answer! I would like to say there is a prize but I’m afraid there isn’t 😂 except if you get it right you can live in the knowledge you were right 🤣🤣 Happy drawing!Izzy x. P.S I’m using pastelmat mostly with Pablo and Polychromos colour pencils with one Luminance and one Lightfast. #colourpencils #colorpencils #colouredpencildrawing #coloredpencildrawing #pastelmat #pastelmatpaper #drawingreel #timelapsedrawing #wildlifeartist #animalartist
It’s been quite a week with my sharpener which has insisted on breaking all my pencil leads. Inevitably I’ve been avoiding it like the plague and I’ve been wearing the tips of my pencils down so much they don’t do what I want them to! 🧐 It got me thinking how sharp should you colour pencils actually be when you use them? I do it so automatically these days I don’t have to think about whether I need it sharp, dull or blunt pencil for whatever I’m creating. Maybe this question has got you thinking….. 🤔 do you consciously decide what kind of tip you use on your pencil? It’s actually a really important point to consider to help you produce the best drawings possible. If you would like to find out more and get a couple of pointers to help yourself, then I’ve created a short video over on my You Tube channel IzzysArt Whilst I love using a really sharp pencil best of all, I do also use different sharpnesses for different things. What’s your favourite kind of tip? Happy drawing!Izzy x#colourpencils #colorpencils #pencilsharpener #coloredpencilartist #pencilsharp #colouredpenciltips #coloredpenciltips
Ever wondered how to draw the spines and all those course hairs on a hedgehog? Then wonder no more! I originally created this piece as an in-depth tutorial for my colour pencil membership (where you can still access it if you join) but I have decided to release my favourite ones a couple of times a year as tutorials you can purchase and keep. So for those of you who prefer to buy individual tutorials, this one’s for you! Now before I tell you what you will learn, let me say I’ve created a Timelapse with voice over of this one too over on my You Tube channel so you can always go and watch that.⭐️So what will you learn?I will teach you how to layer your colour pencils, choose colours, the different techniques I use, including how to use a Slice Cutter for the hairs and my waxy pencil technique for the spines. The great thing about this one is it also introduces you to drawing part of a background, which I talk you through how I designed it and teach you how to draw leaves, including shiny ones. You get access to nearly 14 hours of real time videos, broken down into manageable chunks, so you can draw along with me. As well as reference photos, material list and an outline for you to use. You can always find out more by visiting my bio. A little close up… looking at a picture close up can look very different to viewing it from afar, which is why it is important to make sure you frequently stand back from your artwork. Generally you view drawing and paintings from across a room, but it always fascinates me to go right up to them and examine the strokes that have been used. Do you ever do that?
