The other day, my little girl asked if she could see all the artwork I had drawn over the years. So today I started searching through a pile of artwork I have stashed away and I came across this one I had forgotten all about!

Looking at it I remember I had bought some Pitt black Matt pencils and this was my first time trying them out. I know I was really enjoying using them, so I’m not entirely sure why I never finished it. I suspect my busy life got in the way!! 😆 I’ve left it on my art table in the hope I’ll find some time to do some more in it, as I hate not finishing things.

As I’ve got older, early mornings have become my favourite time to draw. Getting up super early this morning allowed me to get some drawing done before everyone else woke up and I got into Mum mode. It’s so important to create those moments of quiet time for yourself to do something you love.

Having got started on the body today, I realised that the bottom of the ear is not dark enough. It’s funny, because when it was against the white paper it looked so much darker. This just goes to show why it’s so important to get some pencil down to cover the white paper to help get your tonal values right. I’m now itching to go back to make those dark tones in the ear even darker but I’m trying to be patient to finish off that side of the body first!!

After such a crazy busy week, it feels good to grab a little bit of quiet time in my studio making a start on the elephants body.

The key thing I’m trying to remember with this part is not to make it too detailed. I always end up getting sucked into the details because I love them so much! It’s important to not make it all super detailed though to help create that sense of depth and also not to detract from the focal point of the face and trunk.

Let’s see how it goes….

I’m reaching that point now where I cannot wait to see what it looks like finished?! Do you ever get that feeling?

The grass is virtually done and thank you to those of you who have messaged me asking about the eraser guard I shared yesterday. I’m planning on making a little video hopefully tomorrow where I will show you how I used it.

Happy drawing!

Do you ever modify your tools? So this is my eraser guard that I’ve had for donkeys years. As you can see I ended up cutting a chunk out of the middle of mine because I wanted a bigger hole for my tape to go over, so I have more space. Probably not how they intended for it to be used but it works for me! I like to use Scotch Magic tape on it to lift off bits of pencil, it works like magic when you draw on top of it!

I had forgotten how much I love drawing grass! Before I started I was thinking how on earth am I going to do this, then it all came flooding back to me. Sometimes it’s so easy to look at something and become overwhelmed with how complicated it looks but it doesn’t have to be. Our brains are great at tricking us into thinking we can’t do something when actually we just need to take a step back and break it down into manageable steps or chunks.

Do you let overwhelm stop you from drawing certain things?

I’ll share a little more about drawing grass with you during the week as I tackle the other side.

Today has been a big day with the twins starting a new year at school and I’ve been doing some work at school too! I’m happy to say we all had a great day, albeit very tired but it’s also great to come home and step into my art studio to see this magnificent creature on my art table. There is something about elephants that I find particularly fascinating. 🧐

Summer holidays have come to an end with lots of highs and lows. I’ve managed some wonderful days out with my twins, including to the National Gallery (which I’ll share another day) but there have been plenty of days filled with migraines, headaches and problems with my vision. Have I managed to draw as much as I wanted? Sadly no, but I’ve still been creating my tutorials of the elephants which I’m loving. I have discovered that my vision is deteriorating and I now am trying to get used to wearing glasses for close up stuff, including my drawings. My husband thinks it’s hilarious that I’ve reached an age where I wear them on a chain, but I know full well I’ll end up loosing them! 😂 Do any of you wear glasses to draw and how do you not misplace them?! I have enough trouble not loosing my pencils!! 🤣

Anyway hopefully it will help me to get more drawing done and I’ll be sharing more on drawing the elephant over the coming week.

Happy drawing!

I’ve been pretty quiet on here recently, taking a bit of time off from worrying about trying to keep up with posting every day. It doesn’t mean I’m not still drawing though and currently I’m really rather enjoying drawing an elephant chosen by my students. Elephant ears are just so fabulous to draw, and I can’t wait to get stuck into those wrinkles!

This week I’m taking some much needed time out with my family, but I will be back to posting more regular content very soon once my batteries have been recharged!

Happy drawing!

So where do you begin? Not only do you have to think about what part to draw first, but also how you plan to go about layering your pencils. Before getting stuck into details, I like to get down my base layers of pencil. I’ve been mapping in my tonal values and thinking about those warm and cool areas in that fabulous ear. I now can’t wait to keep building those layers and refining the details.

This one is a tutorial over in my colour pencil membership and part 1 is now up and ready to watch if you fancy joining me learning how to draw this African elephant.

I’m all set and ready to teach my live workshop tonight, including borrowing my daughter’s bright pink hair clip as I can’t find mine! For this one I’m covering the texture of snake skin using my favourite colour blue.

This one was a bit of a challenge to plan and search for reference photos, as I have a huge phobia of snakes! 🙈 Do any of you have a phobia of them?

When I sell an original piece, I’m always filled with many emotions. I feel overwhelming blessed that someone loves it enough to purchase it, excited that it will be hung in someone’s house for them to enjoy and thrilled that often it gets to travel across the ocean to a new home to name a few. Besides all those wonderful feelings though, I also feel a bit sad to see a piece go. Especially after spending many hours working on it, I kind of get attached to it! 😂

This one recently went to find its forever home all the way in America. I was blessed enough to meet the lovely Ben the clouded leopard on several occasions and take the reference photo myself. He was such a character and one I will never forget.

I have plans to draw another clouded leopard in the future with my students and I can’t wait!

This cutie pie was such a joy to draw. Not only did I enjoy the process but also being able to teach others how to do it and the techniques I used. I’ve already seen one students finished creation, which is amazing, and I can’t wait to see more!

This one was drawn on Pastelmat using mostly Pablos and Polychromos colour pencils. The reference photo is by Pexels from Pixabay.

I would love to hear what you think of this one, and if you would like to find out more about giving it a go yourself then let me know in the comments and I will give you more info.

Yesterday I shared with you the elephant texture I had been teaching this week as part of a series I’m running. So today I thought I would show you all of the different ones I’ll be covering my over the next few weeks.

So last night was the first of five online workshops I’m teaching to learn how to draw different wildlife textures in colour pencils. It was so much fun to do and hopefully everyone was able to take away lots of really useful tips for how to create the texture of elephant skin. 🐘

One of the advantages of teaching online is it allows people from all around the world to join me which I absolutely love. Whilst I love in person tuition, I also like the easiness of learning online and staying in your PJs if you want to!

Are you someone who enjoys learning online or do you prefer in person tuition?

One of the things I love about colour pencils, is the ability to just pick them up and draw without any time spent tidying away so you can work in short bursts.

Time is something I have been very short on this last month but being able to do just a little drawing each day helps me to feel so much better.

Tell me something you love about colour pencils….

There is rather a lot happening in my life at the moment, but being able to sit and work quietly on this one brings me such joy and relaxation. One of the beautiful things about colour pencils, is the ability to just pick them up and work in short bursts if needed, with no mess to clean up afterwards. Do you find them relaxing?

I have always been a details kind of a girl, I can’t help it, it’s just who I am. So having worked up those layers to get the tonal values in and the base colours down means I then get to add in those details that I love so much.

As much as I love doing detail work, it’s so important not to dive straight in with it, take your time doing the base work first and it makes it much easier.

Are you a details kind of person? Or do you prefer to be looser?

This week I received a lovely email from a student, who had purchased my hedgehog tutorial saying how much they had enjoyed it and learnt from it. They were also kind enough to send me a photo of their drawing and allow me to share it with you all. How amazing is this!! It always fills my heart with such joy when I see what my students create with my teaching and knowing I’ve played a part in their learning journey.

So I thought I’d give you a peak into what it’s like in my studio at the moment…. It would seem that I have piles of coloured pencils everywhere!!! Whilst you hear lots of ladies love to collect shoes or handbags I think it’s probably safe to say I have a bit of an addiction to collecting pencils! 😂

I’m curious, for the colour pencil lovers out there how many do you think you have?
And for you other lovely people what do you like to collect?

I’m in the midst of organising my tutorials that I’ve done over the past few years and it got me thinking about what animals I have created them for.

Whether written as PDFs or printed as books, videos or full courses, some of the animals include;

🧡Tigers
🤍White tiger
🖤Black jaguar
💛Lion
🤎Hedgehog
🩵Toucan
💜Lilac breasted roller bird
❤️Red Panda
🤍Snow Leopard
💚Frog
🩶Owl

The BIG QUESTION is what animals do you think I should create tutorials of in the future? Let me know in the comments. 😊
