Another Veteran Group 1 for Claudia at The City under Kevin Young! This came with her 14th CC under Marion Sargent. She will be 13 in October and still loving shows, mainly because everyone has food in their pockets, rich pickings for her.
Brian the norfolk, Ch Belleville Playmate, won his 5th CC and BOB hot on the heels of his recent Group 3.

Champion number 77 for Belleville Show Kennels! 438 CC's won in 3 breeds.
Sometimes the stars align and they certainly did for our new Ch Belleville Playmate, made up on Sunday. Norfolk are notoriously difficult to photograph (they never standstill). For this photo taken yesterday by Edwin Morgan We had been outside for about 2 minutes and about to start when the kennel dogs must have spotted us and started barking taking his attention. So this was the very first photo taken, all done and dusted in under 60 seconds. That must be a world record!!

Fabulous day at Leeds. Brian the Norfolk, (now Ch) Belleville Playmate finally managed to lengthen his attention span long enough to take his 3rd CC and BOB under Jane Eyeington.
Then under Robin Searle, Vidas took his second CC with BOB (having not been to a Ch show since Crufts). His grandmother Claudia took her 12th CC and was second in the veteran stakes. Congratulations to Claudia's granddaughter, Lili, Laura Kirk's Belleville Crazy in Belleville Crazy In Love of Belezaflor JW on her RBCC as well as Genevieve and Horace on their RDCC too! Thanks to Janet Lazenby and Zach Lewis for their help. With Laura Kirk and Lily they made it into the breeders class and got a lovely 2nd whilst I was doing battle with Brian in the Norfolk ring!

Thank you Janet for this lovely picture of Eric winning Group 4 today under Ben Reynolds Frost. That's a Group 1, 2 and 4 from his last 3 Group appearances. He was also Veteran Group 2 under Bill Grey. (fosse results are wrong)

Loving Hilda's litter of 4 girls almost 6 weeks old. At birth I couldn't tell them apart and had to put nail varnish on their heads. I cant remember the last time I had to do that with a litter as I always know which is which. I don't like collars on babies.
Mum is Crufts '24 BCC winner, Che Belleville Hope Star, Dad Crufts '20 DCC winner and 2019 Top Winner Ch Belleville Major Key.

After our fantastic results at Bath, Southern Counties was also a fabulous show. Claudia and Eric did the double again (no CC's this time) under José Homem de Mello, Claudia then won her 3rd veteran Group in a row under Espen Engh and Eric got a really fabulous Group 2 under Annukka Paloheimo. I was on my own so have no photos from the Groups, had to wait for the paper to come out.

Oh Wow! It has not sunk in at all yet. First Eric and Claudia do the double under Finnish Judge Mr J Limatainen, then Eric wins Group 1 at Bath Canine Society 2024 under Marion Sargent and finally Claudia wins Veteran Group 1 under Jill Peak! What a show! In fact a great show for the whole breed as Christine Richings was 2nd in the Special Beginner Group with Florence whilst Megan Slack was 4th in the Puppy Group with Lottie.

I have neglected the Norfolk's lovely wins recently, Brian (Belleville Playmate) had a fab Birmingham National where he won his first CC under Dorothy Dorkins whilst Colin (Belleville Infamous Colin) in his first junior class got the RDCC. At SKC May show under Colin Powel Brian got his 3rd the RDCC and little Hugo (Belleville Hope Alert) on only his second time out at 7 months took BP at both SKC shows, was RBD at the Oct show and also got a Puppy Group Shortlist. Love my boys!

Claudia's turn this week to win her 9th BCC and then BOB under Michelle Smee and then a lovely Group shortlist under Fran Kaye and finally Veteran Group One at SKC May show under David Guy. What a roll she and her son Eric are on! He took BOB in the October show (no CC's) under John Richie and then Veteran Group 4 under Liz Stannard. 2 shows in one day is quite exhausting! All 3 of us were definitely feeling it by the end of the day. However it was topped off by a lovely BBQ with Laura Kirk and Wendy Downing-Smith where we drank Eric's bubbly from the week before. No bad heads the next day so it must have been good stuff!

Following in his mother's footsteps. First time as BV and he does this under Frank Kane yesterday. Love you Eric, you never disappoint. Thank you Laura Perlich for coming back just in time to take this and for helping me load up the van.

We made the Kennel Gazette! Nearly 2 months later and I still can't quite believe it happened. It was a wonderful day and a real culmination of nearly 33 years as a breeder. Thanks again to LLaura Kirk Janet Lazenby and Sophie Wildig who handled their charges to perfection. I should also thank ZZach Lewiswho was with us and helped with the hard work, pulling trolleys etc and supported us from the audience.
I have to thank Marjorie Bunting and Lesley Crawley (Ragus Norfolk & Norwich) for teaching me about breeding. Firstly and very importantly how to understand, interpret and apply a breed standard to then know what to aim for. If you can’t assess your dogs properly, know what to look for and how to recognise both faults and virtues you will just be stabbing in the dark. You may get a flyer but the odds are lower.
Marjorie and I used to discuss Norfolk and Norwich pedigrees for hours and discussed how to line breed successfully, select appropriate mates, when to outcross, when to discard a line and most importantly of all, how to select the correct puppy. Lesley and I still discuss puppies. Having done all the hard work of producing a lovely litter I have seen other breeders throw it all away by selecting the wrong puppy. "I only want a bitch, or a black one, or a curly one, or a short one, or a lovely head or a fabulous shoulder or a correct eye or loads of bone or a perfect tail or worst of all, I have already sold it as a pet" etc means you will select mediocrity.
You have to select the best all round and assess them at the right age. No dog is perfect so it is always a balancing act. What did you hope to gain from the mating? The puppy you keep should have this and preferably more. Some matings or parents are what I consider to be "stepping stones" to future improvement. ie they may not produce the next champion but they do produce an excellent grounding to move forward. Sometimes you find a mediocre parent who produces outstanding puppies due to the pedigree behind them. One of my 2 Norfolk foundation bi***es was exactly this and when mated correctly to line breed she produced my first home bred Champion. About once every 10 years I have had an outstanding sire who sires lovely puppies to different bitch lines. About once every 5 years I find a combination that really works from several different approaches.
And then there is the once in a lifetime dog that can spoil you for all that come afterwards.

Crufts 2024 is one I will never forget. The icing on the cake is Eric's critique from world renowned judge, Espen Engh after Eric won a huge Open Class with many international representatives. "OD (11,2) 1 Ch Belleville Anjo Negro. A lovely dog, very close to my ideal for the breed as he excels in proportions, balance and breed type. Compared to some, he may look on the smaller side, but he is decidedly masculine and in reality his size is closer than his competitors to what the standard calls for, and I appreciate him even more for that reason. Excellent head proportions with very good width of skull in balance to the rest of him, a pleasing stop and ideal length of muzzle. Very good neck, well set and not long. Matching bone for his size. So very well balanced angulation both ends. Excellent topline and tailset. He is a truly outstanding mover from all angles, sound, athletic, energetic, perfectly coordinated and balanced and very much in synch with his handler. Just fabulous! I was delighted to award him the CC & BOB."
