When you train your dog to recall wherever they are, to easily enjoy an open top bus ride, to be happy chilling with you when you fancy enjoying a wee beverage 😊.

You have a dog that can go with you wherever you go and live their best life 😍.

Then home to chill out. Bliss ❤️🐾

I don't normally share posts, but this is 100% worth sharing with you.

❤️ It's a bit of a long read, but Jane at Waggawuffins says so beautifully what reward based training is all about.

🐾 I agree with every word. And I'm lucky to also attract wonderful clients who wish to use reward based methods and achieve amazing results for their dogs in doing so. ❤️🐾

I don't normally get into dog training method debates but I've recently seen a lot of misinformation about what we as reward based trainers actually do.

Dog training is like a spectrum, with trainers leaning more towards reinforcement as their main strategy or towards correction as their main strategy. Most trainers are somewhere in the middle, leaning one way or the other.

For example, when I'm presented with a dog I'm thinking: how do I change this behaviour without using correction as opposed to how can I correct this behaviour.

Before this I will first ask myself: is this a training or behaviour problem, or is something else going on? Neurological issues or pain are common reasons for inappropriate or strange behaviour, especially aggression.

The needs and wellbeing of the dog are as important as the humans.

We all view the world through different lenses, based on our own experiences and beliefs.
I attract clients with a similar lens to myself and they are generally people who are not comfortable with using corrections and punishment.

I've been training dogs since the early 90s and I've watched people train with reward-based methods change the world of dog training. Many are competing at top level in sports. Obedience and Agility significantly. There are smaller numbers in protection sports and gundog training but they are there making a difference. I'm actually excited to see if it can be achieved. We're on a journey of discovery trying to do better for our dogs.

So what do we do?
We build a toolbox of reinforcement strategies, we read body language and emotions so we can have a conversation with the dog. Relationships are important. We guide and we listen. The listening is really important.

We build trust, safety, confidence and resilience. It's about an overall well-balanced dog.

Our reward toolbox and strategies go beyond just giving treats for good behaviour and that's where the misunderstanding often comes in. Timing is so important. If you haven’t experienced reinforcement-based training in depth, it can be easy to underestimate how powerful and nuanced it really is. We can change behaviour and mindsets.

Here's the other thing, we will use punishment!

Withholding a reward, keeping a door closed, keeping a lead on. It’s all punishment.
You will find positive trainers on a scale. Some might use verbal interrupters like “ah-ah” or “no,” some will not.
Some might use head collars for management, some might not.

So there may be mild aversives going on, but it's normally a last resort. Some will work to completely avoid any aversives.

Positive trainers aren’t living in a magical fairyland without consequences, we just choose to keep those consequences mild, clear, and fair, and we work hard to avoid unnecessary pressure while still building confidence and resilience.

Did you know, you can also create rules and boundaries with reward based training.

We're all on a journey to become more skilled and our community goal is to get better at using reinforcement and avoiding punishment.

We have to remember some dogs can cope with pressure better than others. Many sport dogs are genetically selected to cope with pressure. However, many pet-bred dogs don't. Then there's genetic trainability and motivation which differs significantly in different breeds .

I feel pet trainers are quietly doing amazing work out there and are undervalued in the industry. So here's my shout out to you people 🙌

My final thought is skill.

In everything I've done in life where there's groups of people there's normally the top 10%, a load of people somewhere in the middle and the bottom 10%.

Some people are good at stuff and some are not.

In dog training it's often the capability of the trainer that fails the dog, not the method, and these failings are often used as ammunition from both sides to bring the other into disrepute. This makes me sad.

Methods matter, but they only come alive in the hands of an empathetic and skilled trainer.

We have to find a method that sits comfortably with our beliefs and capabilities.
Reward-based training sits comfortably with my own values and it’s where I have flourished and I’ve seen dogs and owners flourish the most. This is my place and these are my people.

Here's my old boy Stig, he's been a great teacher 🖤

Beautiful Betty & Stanley have recently started my 1-2-1 Training Programme. They have the best names ever, don't you think 😍.

❤️ Betty & Stanley are siblings and very bonded to one another. This can be a real challenge from both a training point of view and having them listen individually to their lovely mum.

🐾 Both dogs like to take their walk into their own hands and it can then become a bit of a competition to see who can pull the most.

❤️ Lovely Stanley also struggles on an emotional level when he sees unknown dogs, so his go to behaviour is to shout and tell them to stay away.

🐾 So we are working on both Stanley's reactivity struggles alongside some loose lead walking techniques for them both. They are such lovely dogs, and I really look forward to seeing them progress.

If you are struggling with your own dog's behaviour, or finding it a challenge with two dogs. Please get in touch ❤️🐾

❤️ It means so much to me when my lovely clients take the time out of their busy lives to leave me a review.

🐾 When I first met fabulous Labradoodle, Murphy, his mum was struggling as he pulled so badly on lead and had zero recall. Unfortunately Murphy's mum had a shoulder injury, which meant that walking him was not enjoyable at all.

❤️ Fast forward to today. And the work that she put in really paid off. I'm so delighted with my lovely Google review.
Thank you so much Angela ❤️🐾

Gorgeous little cockapoo puppy, Aoife began her 1-2-1 Puppy Training Programme this week.

❤️ Aoife is Irish for beautiful, and she definitely suits her name.

🐾 Her lovely puppy parents want to get Aoife off to the very best start in life.

❤️ I absolutely loved that the main reason they chose to book my puppy programme, was so that Aoife could have the best life and that she would be happy and confident going places with them.

🐾 Teaching important skills such as:
✅ Confidence building.
✅ How to settle at home or in a cafe or public place.
✅ A really reliable Recall
✅ How to walk nicely on lead, etc.
✅ How to trade or drop items without conflict.
✅ And much, much more...
❤️ Results in a dog that has a much fuller life and one that you can take anywhere.

I can't wait to watch Aoife's progress over the weeks to come ❤️🐾

I love when puppy parents contact me for 1-2-1 training when their pups are still young. It is so much easier teaching the right things early on, rather than waiting until lots of unwanted behaviours start and then trying to 'fix' them.

❤️ This week I had the absolute pleasure of meeting beautiful little cockapoo puppy, Fin and his wonderful parents.

🐾 He was such a superstar at his first puppy 1-2-1 training session.

❤️ We started off teaching Fin some lovely foundation behaviours that we will build upon and add to over the coming weeks.

🐾 I can't wait to watch this fabulous wee boy progress. I just know he's going to be amazing at everything we teach him.

If you have a new puppy in your life, I'd love for you to get in touch and we can chat about how I can help you with my bespoke 1-2-1 Puppy Training Programme.
You can book a free call via my website ❤️🐾

How beautiful is Lando? (awesome name 😊).

❤️ Lando is a young adolescent male, who is very much going through the challenging 'teenage' phase of his life.

🐾 His wonderful parents got in touch for help through one of my 1-2-1 training programmes.

❤️ No two training programmes are the same, as each one is specifically tailored to the individual needs of the dogs and their humans, with tweaks along the way 😊.

🐾 Lando is learning how to make better choices and decisions, which will make everyone's life easier.

He is doing fabulously well, I look forward to watching him progress over the weeks to come. ❤️🐾

Does your dog have a set routine?

🐾 Dogs are great predictors of everything that happens in their day. With some dogs (and especially with our Cockapoos and Doodles) this anticipation of what's going to happen can easily spill over into anxiety, overarousal and a bit of a stressy dog.

For many years now I've intentionally made sure that Benji doesn't have a set routine every day. Why?

❤️ During our recent heatwave he didn't expect to go for walks at certain times of the day. He was happy to relax and enjoy some enrichment and cuddles instead. I know people whose dogs got really tetchy as they couldn't get their usual mid-day run at the park.

🐾 If I'm running a bit late near dinner time, which inevitably happens, he doesn't mind as his dinner can be anytime between 4.30pm and 6.30pm. Again, I know lots of dogs who will pester their humans at 5pm on the dot, some resorting to barking to remind them it's tea time!

❤️ I made the mistake years ago of having a set time that we did our training. This resulted in Benji starting to get worked up and pawing at me as we got close to his training time (he loves training!). By the time it came to do some work, he was so over the top that he actually couldn't think straight and would offer me 20 behaviours before I'd even asked.
This taught me to mix things up a bit, which worked a treat (excuse the pun 😉).

🐾 As a result of the lack of structure in Benji's day, he doesn't get stressed or over anxious if things don't happen right on a specific time. Which has made him a much more chilled out boy.

I firmly believe that helping our dogs to be flexible in this crazy busy world we live in serves them well. ❤️🐾

I am loving working with beautiful Labradoodle, Iris and her fantastic mum.

❤️ Iris's mum initially got in touch as Iris was displaying some unwanted behaviours at home and out on walks. She was also struggling to settle in the evenings and wouldn't give their other dog a moments peace.

🐾 It became evident that as well as lacking a few different skills, Iris had a general issue with over arousal.

❤️ So our first priority was to look at ways to help reduce her over arousal, which has helped us to get Iris in a better place to think and learn.

🐾 She is an incredibly fast learner, and such a pleasure to work with.

We still have further sessions scheduled to get us to exactly where we want to be. But her progress to date is just awesome. I'm so proud of her and her mum. ❤️🐾
