Touching your Dog.
Owners should always ensure that they are able to touch their dog on every part of his body. Everything from teeth to tail.
This will make things much easier if the dog has an injury or an area of the body that he is constantly paying attention to which needs to be examined.
Practice touching the dogs body and always ensure that it is a pleasurable experience for the dog. Touching the dog all over is part of the Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme....Bob.

Conker warning!
Another annual warning for us all to be aware of.
As autumn approaches and conkers are falling from the trees, please be aware of a two-fold danger to our dogs from the fruit of the Horse Chestnut Tree.
Firstly, the conkers if chewed and eaten, are poisonous.
Secondly, if they are swallowed whole they can cause a blockage in the dog’s intestine.
If it is suspected that a dog has ingested conkers then the recommended course of action is an urgent trip to the vet.
As always, prevention is better than cure, so never throw conkers for dogs to retrieve. Never encourage them to pick up or in any way play with conkers….Bob.

Dog Attacks on Postal Workers.
A recent report from The Royal Mail has revealed that in the past year almost 2,200 attacks by dogs on postal workers were reported.
This number is slightly up on the previous year and still presents a significant safety risk to Postal deliver workers.
A spokesperson for the Royal Mail states:
“The Royal Mail continues to call on the public to be vigilant and responsible by securing their pets before opening the door to receive mail or packages.”
As I have said many times before, we are all responsible for our own dogs, and must take all possible steps to ensure that they cause no harm to anyone....Bob.

Harvest Mites.
The Kennel Club have issued a new warning concerning Harvest mites. (Sometimes known as “Chiggers”)
These pests can cause intense itching for our dogs and can be passed to other creatures including humans. They are not an overly serious problem but they can lead to secondary infections caused by the dog scratching intensely.
These tiny orange pests are active from August to November and are commonly picked up during walks in rural areas. You might spot them as orange dots or dust, especially between your dog’s toes or on their lower legs.
If it is suspected that a dog has contacted Harvest mites, a visit to the vet is the quickest and easiest solution.....Bob.

“Deliveroo” for Rescue Dogs!
A recent report from the R.S.P.C.A. highlights a growing problem with overseas rescue dogs. They are calling for all dog rescues to be licensed amid growing concerns of behavioural issues and disease risks in imported pets.
They have revealed multiple rescues operating through social media who were happy to provide a dog following a short phone call and completion of an application form. The majority of these dogs were from Eastern Europe and there seems to be no evidence of any realistic health or temperament checks on the dogs. These dogs are then delivered to the adopters home and literally handed over on the doorstep. Hence we have the phrase “Deliveroo” for Rescue Dogs!.
This lack of preparation and vetting of both potential owners and dogs is being referred to as a “Ticking time bomb”. There seems to be no attempt to assess the dogs temperament and its suitability for any particular home.
A spokes person for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said that people can check if a rescue is a member of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes, which had “set clear standards”. Sadly I fear that many “Rescues” involved with overseas rescues are simply business’s operating under the guise of a Rescue.
Of course I have no wish to tar all rescues with the same brush. I personally know a number of individuals who work tirelessly to rehome dogs from both home and abroad. Unfortunately the well meaning and bona fide individuals and organisations are in danger of being overwhelmed by the rogue element. Perhaps the R.S.P.C.A.s suggestion of licensing for all rescue organisations would go some way towards easing the problem....Bob.

Stubble Fields….Annual Warning

Please be aware, as the harvest season approaches, when exercising or training dogs on stubble fields.
Newly cut stubble can cause injury to dog’s feet, eyes, nose, ears, etc. especially when running at speed.
Owners who are using stubble fields for tracking or searching exercises or just general exercise should be especially careful.
Take care and be aware….Bob

Training Tip – Recall.
When giving our dog free (safe) exercise, call him back at frequent intervals and reward him. He can be rewarded with food, toy, or physical and verbal praise. Then however, he gets the best reward of all, he is given his freedom again.
This will help the dog to recognise that returning to his owner means that good things happen and he is not just put back on his lead and losing his freedom. This can be repeated any number of times during the walk. By doing this the dog becomes happy to return to his owner.
This method of course is not a replacement for teaching the recall in a more formal manner, but it is an excellent way of re-enforcing it….Bob.

National Dog Day.
Today, 26th August is designated as National Dog Day.
It was established in 2004 by dog enthusiasts to bring to the attention of the public the plight of the many dogs in the U.K. that are in Rescue.
National Dog Day celebrates all dogs of whatever breed and brings to our attention the thousands of dogs that bring comfort and pleasure into our lives. Family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives and keep us safe. Dogs assist us every day. For personal protection, for law enforcement, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs.
Sometimes we perhaps need a reminder of the important role that dogs play in all of our lives....Bob.

I.R.A. Bomb in Coventry….86th Anniversary
On 25 August 1939, five people died and 70 were injured when an IRA bomb exploded in Coventry city centre.
Police investigations revealed the bomb had been planted by the IRA as part of what is now a largely-forgotten campaign of attacks on English cities known as the S Plan. (S for sabotage).
The bomb was left in a bicycle in Broadgate, the very heart of the city.
The Coventry bombing took place just nine days before the outbreak of World War Two and the IRA attacks on cities including Birmingham, Manchester, Oxford, Liverpool and London, continued until March 1940.
Two men were convicted of the atrocity and were later hanged at Winson Green Prison in Birmingham.
World events overcame the news of this incident, with war being declared on 3rd September 1939.
Whilst not wishing to dwell on the past, I am sure there are many who would wish to give a thought to the innocent victims of this act who unfortunately history seems to have forgotten. The accompanying photo is of the bicycle used in the attack....Bob.

Windfall Apples….Annual Warning.
Once again it is the time of year to issue the annual warning about windfall apples being eaten by dogs. There is a potential danger of dogs eating windfall apples and being poisoned by the cyanide that is contained in the pips. Whilst it may be true that most dogs would have to eat a large number of apples before suffering the consequences, surely it is better to avoid the problem.
Each year instances of dogs being poisoned by this means are reported by vets throughout the country.
Signs that this poisoning has happened would be extreme vomiting and lethargy.
Whilst the windfall season is fairly short, nevertheless it is worth bearing in mind. Try to keep dogs away from windfall apples…. Bob.

Should I say “No”?
“No” seems to be a word used frequently by a large number of pet dog owners. In fact, I believe that there are a large number of dogs that think that their name is “No”!
Whilst there may be nothing wrong with telling a dog “No”, I would suggest that unless it is used merely as an interruptive word to gain a dogs attention when he is doing something we do not want, then it is too vague. It does not tell him what we actually want him to do. I feel a better course of action is to give the dog a command to do something that we do want. We should be positive not negative.
An example would be, if the dog is jumping up at someone and we merely say “No”, how does the dog interpret this? If “No” means to the dog that he should stop what he is doing then does that mean he can jump up at another person, or jump up at the same person from another direction or just jump higher? If instead we were to tell him to “Sit” then that is clear to the dog what we require of him (assuming that he has been taught the “Sit” command).
Merely saying “No”, without a positive command to direct him into the right course of action, will only lead to confusion. I repeat, we should be POSITIVE not negative….Bob.
