Responsible Dog Ownership Course
This half day classroom based course was developed in association with West Midlands Police as a way of guiding owners on the behaviour of their dogs, the legislation affecting their dogs and how they can avoid contravening the current dog related laws and become responsible dog owners. An ideal learning platform for pet owners and professionals alike.
This course can be delivered “In house” by arrangement for veterinary practices, dog training clubs, dog walking firms, and dog rescues as well as to the general dog owning public....Bob.

Searching for Property Course
I have on a number of occasions spoken about the importance of keeping dogs mentally stimulated. This applies to all dogs but especially some of the working breeds. One of the most common problems with pet dogs is that they are bored. They need something to occupy their minds.
It was with this in mind that I developed the Searching for Property course which I have delivered for many years.
Dogs are taught to search an area of overgrown ground in order to find any articles hidden there bearing any human scent. It has similarities to the Property Square exercise in working trials but is much more practically based.
Owners are taught the theory of scent so that they are able to understand more about the world of scent that their dog lives in.
This is the same basic scent training that is delivered to operational Police Dogs and Handlers. The underlying difference is of course that we do it for fun.
Over the years, this has proved to be one of the most popular of our courses….Bob

Puppy Consultation.
There are a vast number of new dog owners who take on a puppy, but do so without the benefit of sound advice on the rearing of this new family member. These new owners can benefit greatly by the correct advice at this important stage in their dog’s life.
Of course it must be the correct advice. I do hear some horror stories about so called “Puppy parties” that appear to be simply organised chaos. The question should be asked, “What does a puppy learn by being allowed/encouraged to play at will with other puppies? The answer, I suggest, is that we are teaching him that other dogs are a source of pleasure. Is it any wonder that as he matures he is constantly trying to get to other dogs? There is more to socialisation than free play with other dogs.
In my previous working life I was in charge of the West Midlands Police dog breeding programme and puppy walking scheme. I was responsible for the rearing of many puppies. Most of the “Hands on” rearing was carried out by puppy walkers, all of whom were guided on the “Do’s and don’ts” by myself. Consequently I formulated a tried and tested method of how to guide novice puppy walkers in their role. This method evolved into the Puppy Consultation delivered by Delta One Canines which is still being delivered to new puppy owners to this day.
The principle that I have when delivering advice to new dog owners is that it is always better to do things correctly from the start. That way it is possible to avoid many problems. I consider it foolhardy to simply trust to luck and then allow problems to develop that need to be addressed later in the dogs life. The rescue centres are full of dogs whose owners “Trusted to luck!”
I maintain it is as easy to rear a puppy correctly as incorrectly! Owners just need the knowledge. The knowledge is out there, they just have to let it in!...Bob.

Behavioural Consultations
Many owners of pet dogs have problems that they believe are unique to themselves. This is not the case. Dogs that are showing aggression, causing damage or exhibiting other many and varied undesirable behaviours, are only too common.
There is however an alternative to either tolerating the problem or disposing of the dog.
Delta One Canines are able to offer a behavioural consultation which will lead to a much more in depth understanding of the problem. Once the cause is established, a behaviour modification programme can be put into place to deal with this root cause.

As an Honorary Life Member and former Board member, of The Canine Behaviour & Training Society, (formerly U.K. Registry of Canine Behaviourists), I can offer advice on a broad range of canine behavioural problems throughout the Midlands area
Help is available!....Bob.

Basic Pet Dog Obedience Course.
The basic course offered by Delta One Canines includes all the elements that a pet dog owner needs. Like all of our courses it is delivered on a “One to one” basis so that owners and dogs can progress at their own pace without distractions.
• Walking on the lead
• Sit
• Down
• Stay
• Recall
After completion of this course, owners will have control of their dogs and will have been shown the pleasure that owning a well behaved dog can bring.
For many owners, this level of obedience training is quite sufficient. For those who want to go on to other aspects of dog training, we can offer Advanced Obedience training, and of course, participation in the Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme.
Not only does this course give owners control of their dogs but also provides valuable mental stimulation for the dog, thereby enriching their lives…..Bob.

P.C. Gavin Richard Carlton….In Memoriam.
On this date in 1988, P.C. Gavin Richard Carlton was shot dead in Torrington Ave. Coventry whilst attempting to arrest two men fleeing from an armed robbery on a bank in the city.
The men continued their flight until they were stopped as a result of their car being rammed by a police car at the junction of Fletchamstead Highway and Kenilworth Rd.. At this point the two C.I.D. officers in the car were injured by the men, one of them suffering gunshot wounds. The offenders made off on foot along Kenilworth Rd.
The on duty dog handler that day was my old friend Sgt. Len Yeomans R.I.P.. He attended the scene with his dog and traced the men to a house in nearby Stoneleigh Ave. where they had forced their way in. A stand-off situation developed which was only brought to a conclusion when Gavin’s killer turned his gun on himself and the second man surrendered. This second man was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment.
This tragic incident is marked each year by a short service of remembrance which is held at the spot where it happened.
All respect to the memory of P.C. Gavin Richard Carlton and to the other officers involved in this incident….Bob.

Buying a Puppy for Christmas?
The last of this week’s posts offering some seasonal advice in relation to our dogs relates to the much laboured point of buying a puppy for Christmas.
It has been estimated that over 50% of U.K. residents have bought or would consider buying a dog/puppy for Christmas.
Pleases consider these points:
Responsible dog charities will not allow dogs to be adopted during the Christmas period.
Responsible dog breeders will not allow puppies to go to new owners during the Christmas period.
There are good reasons why responsible dog “Professionals” adhere to these rules.
The average household at Christmas is NOT the place for a young puppy or new dog. Wait until all the festivities are over before introducing a new puppy into the household.
By doing so it makes things easier both for the new dog/puppy and the new owners….Bob.

Dogs at Christmas (3)
Previous posts on this subject have mainly been about things to avoid or not do. There are however a number of things that we can do for our dogs which will make the Christmas period safer and possibly more enjoyable.
If we have visitors to the house who the dog is not familiar with, take some time to make sure that the dog has accepted them. Make sure the visitors know not to force their attention on the dog if he doesn’t want to know. Meeting unknown people who have apparently “invaded” his house can be traumatic for a nervous dog.
Be aware that unusual noises such as Christmas crackers or popping of corks or even just the general hubbub of lots of people talking can be stressful for especially a nervous dog.
If you or others have to buy the dog a gift then make sure that it is appropriate. While the dog may be happy to chew on his new squeaky toy he may not be enthusiastic about the Father Christmas outfit that you insist he wears.
Ensure that the dog has somewhere in the house that he can retreat to if he feels overwhelmed. This should be a quiet place that can be his sanctuary.
Try to keep to his normal routine of walks and feeding.
Many dogs will enjoy the excitement of Christmas but many will not. If your dog is one of the latter then ensure that you make suitable arrangements for him…..Bob.

Dogs at Christmas (2)
Yesterday I posted about some of the potential dangers to our dogs from foodstuffs at Christmas.
Today let’s look at some of the other potential dangers at this time of the year.
Christmas trees, both real and artificial can be a source of problems for dogs. Whilst natural trees are low in toxicity, if a dog were to chew them it could lead to vomiting, diarrhoea or mouth injuries.
The ornaments on the tree can be very attractive to the dog but chewing ornaments, tinsel other decorations, or artificial trees, would have the same result as chewing any other item made of plastic. They could cause intestinal obstructions or ruptures.
The potential danger of the dog chewing the electric cables for the festive lights is clear to all.
Holly, mistletoe and ivy are all of low toxicity but nevertheless could cause stomach upsets if eaten by the dog.
Potpourri is made up of various dried plants, flowers and artificial colours, some of which could be toxic to the dog. Keep the bowl of potpourri out of the dogs reach.
Children’s toys left lying around can be a temptation for many dogs. Batteries in toys can cause specific problems. If swallowed they could cause a blockage or if chewed could cause chemical burns.
Once again, prevention is better than cure. A little forethought and planning, coupled with proper supervision, can ensure that we and our dogs have an incident free Christmas.
Further Christmas advice tomorrow….Bob.

Dogs at Christmas
Christmas is a time of the year when lots of unusual and exciting things are brought into our homes. From our dog's perspective making it a very tempting time for them to get up to all sorts of “mischief”. Interesting foods, unusual trees, attractive decorations and Christmas presents may all be of great interest to our dogs, but some of these things may cause them harm.
Let’s first consider some of the foodstuffs that we should keep out of our dogs reach:
• Chocolate. May cause vomiting or diarrhoea. As it is a stimulant, especially darker chocolate, it may bring on excitability, muscle twitches tremors, fits and heart problems.
• Grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas. These are all potentially toxic to a dog and could cause kidney failure. Symptoms of kidney failure would include decrease in urination, increased thirst, and general lethargy.
• Blue cheese. Many dogs are sensitive to the roquefortine C which this type of cheese contains. May lead to tremors and seizures.
• Alcohol. Excessive amount, just as in humans, could lead to drowsiness, unsteadiness, seizures and coma.
These are just an example of the many types of human food that could potentially cause our dogs harm. The simple answer to this problem is not to give our dogs anything that is not a normal part of their diet. Our dogs do not need to indulge themselves with rich and unusual food as many of their owners do!
What do you do if you are concerned that your dog may have eaten something that they shouldn't have?
• Consult your local veterinary practice immediately
• It is important that your veterinary practice make an informed decision as to whether your dog needs to be clinically assessed or treated. Where possible ensure that you tell them:
o What your dog has eaten
o How much has been eaten
o When it was eaten
Do not try and make your dog sick. Trying to do this can sometimes cause other complications, which can make your dog unwell.
Obviously, none of us want our dogs to be ill because of something that we have allowed them to have. The best course of action, as always, is not to let these potentially dangerous situations develop. A little forethought and planning, coupled with proper supervision, can ensure that we and our dogs have an incident free Christmas.
Tomorrow and for the coming week, I will post on other things that we should be aware of in relation to our dogs during the Christmas season ….Bob.

Livestock Worrying – “Operation Recall”.
A joint effort between Cheshire Police Rural Crime Team, the RSPCA, and the Naturewatch Foundation has launched a vital educational initiative, ‘Operation Recall,’ to address the growing concern of livestock worrying across the UK.
The aims of this operation are to raise awareness about the impact of livestock worrying and work to prevent future incidents.
The NFU’s data reveals a staggering 50% increase in the cost of livestock worrying to farmers between 2019 and 2022. Is it a coincidence that this includes the “Covid lock down” period when numerous puppies were purchased but received little or no training or socialisation?
The ‘Operation Recall’ initiative is set to expand nationally, with support from the newly established National Rural Crime Unit. It will include an awareness campaign, educational videos, and dog owner education.
Kate Salmon, campaign manager at Naturewatch Foundation, said: “It’s crucial that dog walkers act responsibly to prevent these incidents, which can lead to tragic consequences for all animals involved.”
The RSPCA’s primary advice to dog owners is to keep their dogs on a lead when in the vicinity of livestock, regardless of their dog’s temperament or the appearance of secure fencing. This simple measure can prevent potentially tragic incidents.
I wish the campaign every success and endorse the advice from RSPCA, keep dogs on a lead in the vicinity of livestock.....Bob

Another Success for a “Bull Breed”
Amidst all the doom and gloom that seems to be surrounding almost all of the “Bull Breeds” it is pleasing to be able to post of some good news relating to this type of dog.
“Harlie” is a Cana Corsa x American Bulldog owned by Laura McKenzie. Recently, Laura and “Harlie” completed a basic training course with Delta One Canines and were successful in achieving the Kennel Club Good Citizen Award at Bronze Level.
Laura has worked determinedly with “Harlie” and is an excellent example of what can be achieved with any dog if the effort is put in. Our congratulations go to Laura, and we look forward to training with her in the future....Bob.

Puppy Rearing Advice via Social Media.
A recent survey by the dog food manufacturer, Royal Canin, revealed that 43% of puppy owners experienced anxiety about the rearing of their pet. As a result, over 50% turned to social media for advice.
Many of these sought advice from various online sources, such as Facebook, often receiving contradictory advice which on occasions was clearly misleading.
Seeking advice from numerous unknown persons on social media can be fraught with danger. Even if the advice is given in all good faith, what guarantee is there that the advice is appropriate for that particular puppy in those particular circumstances?
A spokesperson for Royal Canin says, “ Research suggests that engaging puppies in social media trends is being mistakenly portrayed as a legitimate way of training young dogs. Beneficial early puppy education and training should be about ensuring that dogs can lead happy, quality lives, living harmoniously with people.”
Puppy owners are advised to seek advice from a single, reputable source of information, advice that I would certainly endorse....Bob.

Government Rejects calls to Overturn Ban on XL Bullys.
The government has confirmed it will still go ahead with the American XL Bully ban at the end of the year, despite multiple petitions asking for it to be overturned.
A formal debate was held in Parliament earlier this week where arguments were heard for opposing views. Amongst the points raised was the difficulty in defining the type known as the XL Bully.
The final outcome was that the proposals will go ahead as planned. How the ban will progress in practice remains to be seen.
A further point of interest is that the Scottish Parliament have announced that they do not intend to ban the XL Bully type. A spokesperson for the Scottish Parliament has stated that they have concerns about DEFRAs definition of the breed and that they have a preference for prevention and implementation of tougher penalties for owners not in control of their dogs, rather than a ban on breeds. Lets await further developments....Bob.

Toy Rewards Vs. Food Reward. A New Scientific Study.
The results of a recent study by scientists at the University of Florida tells us that 90% of dogs would prefer a food reward over a toy reward.
A series of experiments was carried out by the scientists where dogs were offered their favourite food reward, i.e. cheese, chicken etc and also their favourite toy, i.e. squeaky toy, stuffed animal etc. 90% of the dogs involved chose the food reward.
Nicole Dorey, a lecturer in the University of Florida Department of Psychology who performed the study with her students and other collaborators, said: “I was surprised, but nobody’s looked at how dogs will work for toys versus food before”.
I am amazed at the comment by Ms. Dorey. Perhaps she should have spoken to any number of experienced dogs trainers who would have told her that whilst most dogs will work better for food reward it is a question of finding the best reward for the individual dog.
Whilst not wishing to appear dismissive of scientific evidence, it does appear that once again, the scientists are telling us what experienced and knowledgeable dog trainers have known, and been practising, for years....Bob.

Lagotto Romagnolo – Kennel Club Good Citizen Award.
Once again, I am very pleased to be able to post that a lesser known breed of dog has successfully completed the Kennel Club Good Citizen Award at Bronze level with Delta One Canines.
The breed is the Lagotto Romagnolo, owned by Owen Whittle. “Marshall” as he is known is just 10 months old and has been in training for two months.
The Lagotto Romagnolo is a native of Italy and was traditionally used both as a retriever of mainly ducks and as a truffle detecting dog. They are described as a lively, inquisitive dog who are intelligent, full of energy and keen to work. That description certainly fits “Marshall”.
Our congratulations to Owen who has put a great deal of effort into “Marshals” training. We hope to see them in the future to advance their level of achievement. ...Bob.

XL Bully Ban – Significant dates.
As most people are already aware the XL Bully dog is to be added to the list of banned breeds as listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. The ban is being introduced in stages which means there are a number of significant dates to be aware of.
The first significant date is NOW! This affects any plans to breed from an XL Bully dog. Any puppies born from a current mating would be born after the following deadline which would mean they could not be sold or given away.
The next significant date is 31 December 2023.
This is the date when Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 is officially amended. It will then be a criminal offence to:-
• Breed from the dog
• Sell or exchange the dog
• Give the dog away
• Allow the dog to be in a public place without being muzzled and kept on a lead
• Abandon the dog or allow it to stray
A public place includes the inside of a motor vehicle if it is in a public place at the time
The muzzle must be sufficient to prevent the dog from biting a person
The lead must be held securely by a person at least 16 years old
These offences will apply to:-
• an owner
• someone who has possession of someone else’s dog
• a rescue
The final significant date is 31 January 2024.
This is the deadline by which the dog must be exempted from the ban i.e. there must be a Certificate of Exemption issued. Full details of conditions for the issue of such a certificate have not as yet been clarified but will certainly mean adequate insurance, neutering and being kept in a secure place.
Further information relating to the ban will be posted as it becomes available....Bob.

The response from dog owners requesting emergency cards has been, as expected, brisk. I believe that all the cards requested have now been sent out. If however you have requested a card and not received it just let me know.
It is encouraging to see that so many people are prepared to take this precautionary measure to ensure the well being of their dogs.
If you have not requested a card but would like one simply message me your postal address and I will post one to you….Bob.

XL Bully Ban – Insurance.
Delta One Canines, in common with all bona fide dog trainers, carries professional insurance. In light of the proposed ban on the XL Bully type I have clarified with our insurance company that we will still be able to provide our training and behavioural services to owners of this type of dog.
I am pleased that the decision of the insurance company is that we can continue as normal subject to the following conditions:
• Dogs must be registered on the index of exempted dogs.
• Public liability insurance must be in place for the dog.
Certificates of the above must be available at the start of training.
• All guidelines such as being neutered, micro chipped, on lead, and muzzled must be adhered to.
From a training point of view, it will be very much business as normal....Bob.

American XL Bully Ban – Protest Campaign.
A campaign titled ,”Don’t Ban Me – Licence Me”, supported by the American Bully Kennel Club, has been started by a group of the breeds supporters. They have so far raised over £142,000.00 to pay for proposed legal action to overturn the ban.
The aim of the group is to petition the Government to review the ban. If this fails they intend to take the matter to Court.
The group advocates “Responsible Dog Ownership, licensing all dogs, regardless of breed, and providing education to owners on how to properly care for and train their pets”.
I would find it hard to disagree with the principle of “Responsible Dog Ownership”, and I will follow the progress of this group with interest....Bob.

Dog Walking in Winter.
With the colder weather starting to make its presence known, perhaps a few suggestions that will make walking our dogs in inclement weather a safer and more pleasant task, would be appropriate:
• Make sure you wipe your dogs legs feet and stomach after a walk. The grit from the roads and dampness from rain and snow can irritate their skin.
• Never leave your dog in a car in cold weather for extended periods.
• After a heavy snowfall, if walking your dog on open ground, beware of the snow covering up unsafe areas. Consider keeping the dog on a lead on rough ground.
• Do not let your dog walk on frozen ponds.
• Do not let your dog come into contact with anti freeze. This could be from a discarded container or spillage on the ground. The taste of anti freeze is attractive to dogs but is nevertheless poisonous.
• Wear non slip footwear and consider your visibility in dark areas.
Just a few suggestions to keep us and our dogs safe....Bob.

Remembrance Sunday.
Our soldiers, sailors and airmen, often supported by Dogs and Horses, have lost their lives in the line of duty during many conflicts.
Today, Remembrance Sunday, we should remember all of those fallen heroes and perhaps during a quiet moment, offer up a prayer of thanks for those that came before us. Those that gave us our freedom by laying down their lives.

The Shadow on the Wall
The bent old man in the foreground
The shadow that you see
Is what this grey haired old gentleman...
Used to be.
A Soldier, Sailor, or Airman
Maybe a British Marine
With back straight as an arrow
And eyes sharp and keen
Been in many Campaigns
Marched many a mile to be
In the heat of battle
Always ready don’t you see
Now this old gentlemen
Walks slowly and uses a cane
Hearing fading daily
Living in constant pain
He fought for his country
The good old U.K.
He’d be the first to volunteer
If needed today.
He’d fought in many countries
Fighting for freedom, for you and me
In places he’d never heard of
On far off oceans and seas
If only he would tell you
Of the things that he’d seen
While he was serving
As a young British Marine
As a young airman
Flying a bomber or fighter plane
Many close calls
Never to complain
Of the hundreds of sorties
Bombing raids by the score
Crippling the enemy factories
That made the things for war
As a young soldier
Fighting on Islands far away
Manning a Vickers machine gun
To keep the enemy at bay.
Maybe a seaman on the cruiser “H.M.S. Coventry”
When peace was finally restored
8th May Nineteen Forty Five
While he was still aboard.
Once a Soldier Always a Soldier
Fighting for your country-you never forget
The pride you have for serving
Is something you don’t regret.

Purple Poppy.
To mark the deaths of the many animals, mainly dogs and horses, who were killed during the many conflicts, a Purple Poppy has been issued.
Of course, we are not comparing the deaths of animals with the deaths of humans. We are not going to credit animals with being heroes, or giving their lives for a cause. They were merely carrying out a task for which they have been trained, with no thought for the possible outcome.
However, many a soldier wounded in "No man’s land" had cause to be grateful to the Search and Rescue dog that found him and brought assistance.
Many a sentry had cause to be thankful for the superb senses of his patrol dog who warned him of an enemy approaching.
Many a Foot Patrol owed their lives to the Explosives Search Dog who indicated the presence of an I.E.D. along the route that they were about to take.
Dogs have assisted man during many conflicts and are worthy of Remembrance....Bob.

Remembrance.
As we enter into the period traditionally set aside for Remembrance I have decided, as in previous years, to mark this time with a series of posts and images all relating in some way to that theme.
Let us be clear, Remembrance does not mean the glorification of war. It is showing respect to those who have given their lives to preserve the way of life that we hold dear.

To start the week I have posted an image depicting a soldier, a dog, a horse and even a pigeon, all of whom have in numerous conflicts made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf….Bob.

American XL Bully Ban – a Veterinary View.
At a recent meeting of the Government Environment, Food and Rural Affairs committee, Mr David Martin, a Government veterinary advisor, has highlighted potential problems that the new legislation presents to the Veterinary profession.

He said, “The large-scale neutering of affected dogs would represent a ‘mountain’ to climb for vets, who are already under pressure.
He added that most vet practices would only be able to carry out one neutering procedure per day on dogs as large as the XL bully.
Speaking on the aspect of euthanizing dogs, he explained that a number of vets would be uncomfortable destroying healthy animals at the request of their owners. He added: “We are allowed to refuse to euthanize a healthy animal under our code of conduct. We support all our vets who refuse to euthanize a healthy animal. So I think we’re going to have significant problems.”
Just a few more problems to add to the list that this legislation seems to be presenting.....Bob.

Pet Home Alone… Emergency Card.

It is six years now since I introduced the “Pet Home Alone Emergency Card”.
If there are readers not familiar with this card then perhaps it is time for an update.
The card is the size of a business card and is carried in the purse or wallet. It contains details of a person who could care for a dog at home alone if the card holder were to be in an accident or otherwise incapacitated.
They were introduced as a result of several incidents where dog owners were hospitalised and no one knew of the existence of the dog until several days later.
I have a supply of these cards which are available free of charge to anyone wanting them. I will gladly post them if you let me have your postal address (obviously by private message) or they can be collected from my training venue by appointment.
They are available to all clients of Delta One Canines as a matter of course.
As I said previously, this is not a new idea, but potentially one that could save a lot of stress and worry in the event of an emergency situation….Bob.

Overweight Dogs – "Five Minutes More" Campaign.
It is estimated that over one million dogs in the U.K. are overweight. This has led to the Pets at Home company launching its “Five Minutes More” campaign. This campaign, fronted by T.V. personality Claire Balding, is aiming to encourage dog owners to walk their dogs a little more during the winter months.
It is believed that many owners use the inclement weather as an excuse not to take their dog out for exercise as often or for as long.
If a dog is overweight it can contribute to serious health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and heart problems. However, the benefits of the daily walk should not be underestimated. It is the simplest yet arguably, most important thing we can do for our dogs. Of course, it is not just the physical benefits of the walk but also the mental stimulation it provides for our dogs. Anything that gives the dog something to think about is a good thing.
