🌭 Hot dogs 🌭

With the recent hot weather, here are a few top tips to help keep your pet cool:

☀️ Avoid walking dogs during the hottest part of the day; early morning or evenings are best
☀️ Don’t leave your pet in the car. They can overheat in a very short amount of time
☀️ Placing ice cubes in water bowls or freezing treats can be a refreshing snack for your pet
☀️ Don’t forget about small furries too! Place hutches in the shade and ensure they have plenty of access to cold water

If you notice any signs of heatstroke, please phone 01228 521393 to speak with a vet!

Did you know this week is Rabbit Awareness Week? 🐰

Rabbits are generally affectionate and social creatures. They are happy to have some time to themselves, but if left alone for too long it can cause stress and anxiety 😕

They need plenty of space to stretch out and move around inside their house 🏠 The toilet area should also be separate to the main sleeping area 💩
Rabbits live between 8 and 12 years on average but some rabbits can live even longer 📏

A rabbit's intestines should constantly be moving. Did you know they eat for around six to eight hours per day? ⏰
Rabbits should have a varied diet which includes both fresh and dry food. 🥬

Rabbit's teeth grow continuously throughout their lives, grass and hay will help promote good dental hygiene! 🦷
Long-haired rabbits can get matted fur if they are not groomed regularly. Around their back end should be kept clean and dry, especially in summer months ☀️

If you would like to make an appointment for your rabbit, please call the surgery ☎

🌟 Friday Focus 🌟

This week is all about the lovely British Blue Thomas who we had in a few weeks ago for investigations and he was very much loved by the nurses 🥰

He presented with nasal discharge and sneezing, he was checked over by one of our vets and given some treatment to help with inflammation. Just over a week later he was admitted for further investigation.

Thomas underwent a general anaesthetic where we shone a small scope up his nostril and could see a foreign body at the top of the nasal passage. Vet, Bethany, placed some small forceps into the nostril where she was able to grab and remove the foreign body which turned out to be a long blade of grass.

His owners report he is doing well and all symptoms have resolved following his procedure. We are pleased to hear Thomas has made a full recovery 🥰

See below ⬇️ the blade of grass 🌱

Worried your wormer isn't working on your flock!

Did you know surveys carried out suggest that nearly all lowland flocks and the majority of upland/hill flocks in England (80%) have some resistance to white drenches. There is also widespread resistance to Levamasole wormers and to a lesser extent Ivermectin based wormers 🪱

Using the same wormer year after year on your flock can result in resistance issues. The first signs of resistance usually noticed are poor weight gain, ill-thrift and scour, despite lambs/sheep having received worming treatment.

Did you know we can perform in house worm egg counts on faecal samples from your flock to help you determine if your sheep need wormed.

If they do need treatment and you are concerned, you may have signs of resistance in the flock, we can also perform a faecal egg count reduction test. This is when a second worm egg count is performed at a set time after treatment to look for resistance.

If you would like to ask any further questions about worming and worm egg counts, please don't hesitate to contact the surgery ☎️

Is it worms or Cocci? 💩🪱

Many things can cause scour in lambs and calves, however the main two causes at this time of year are intestinal worms or coccidosis.

Rather than guessing and using the wrong product, which can be ineffective, expensive and lead towards resistance issues on your farm, did you know we can do in house faecal testing to help aid the correct diagnosis?

We can either test individual samples or samples from groups 👥

Please ring the surgery to discuss if this something you are interested in or have any further questions ☎️

🌟 Friday Focus 🌟

This week we would like to share with you this brave heifer (young female cow), who earlier in the year broke her leg 🐮🦵

Vet Mari was called to examine the heifer and it was clear to see she had broken her leg. Mari decided it was best to try and fix her leg with a plaster cast. Over the following weeks she had regular visits from Mari, who checked the cast was stable.

After six weeks of rest Mari removed the cast with success and was very happy with the end result, as the broken bone had all healed 👏

Pictures below show her having the plaster cast fitted and her stood comfortable on her legs six weeks later 🤩

🐑 Fly strike in sheep 🐑

With the recent hot weather farmers need to be vigilant of fly strike occurring in their flocks 🦟
Flystrike is where parasitic flies lay their eggs in the soiled wool or open wounds of sheep. Contaminated wool makes an excellent breeding ground for flies. The eggs then hatch into maggots which burrow into the skin of the sheep and feed off their flesh 🐛

Peak months for flystrike in the UK are June and July, but it can occur any time conditions are warm and damp. Signs sheep display when they are infested with maggots are:
- Agitation
- Foot stamping
- Green tinged fleece
- Fleece loss
- Strong odour

Preventative measures include:
- Clipping sheep
- Pour on preventative fly products
- Dipping

Please contact the surgery if you have any questions about preventative fly products or if you have any sheep suffering from flystrike ☎

🐔 Poultry register changes 🐔

All birdkeepers, regardless of the size of their flock, will be required to officially register their birds under new measures announced by Defra. The threshold for mandatory registration will be reduced from 50 birds to 1, which means all poultry and captive bird keepers will be legally required to register their birds 🐓

Budgies, parrots, canaries and similar species that are kept indoors or in a dedicated ‘bird house’ without any outside access will be exempt from the above changes.

Nurse weight clinics 🦴⚖️

Our veterinary nurses are here to help, you keep your pets in top shape 💪 We run free weight clinic appointments at both surgeries, Monday-Friday.

These are for cats and dogs that need a little bit of help in reducing their weight to keep them healthy, or just to make sure that your pet is staying at an ideal weight.
By keeping your pet at an ideal body condition score (BCS) you can prevent certain diseases and extend life 🩺

Our nurses can recommend special foods or help you to adjust your normal food to allow for safe controlled weight loss. We often find the most effective way to get some weight off is to switch your pet onto special diet food. We use Royal Canin Satiety weight management.
Our nurses can also give advice on exercise and tips to make dieting easier 🥎

These clinics are open to all pets of any age and size! 🐾

Please phone the surgery to book an appointment with one of our weight clinic nurses, Vicky, Rebecca, Charlotte or Anna 01228 521393 or 01228 585585 ☎️

Dental Hygiene - What a nurse can do to help?

▪️ Pre and post dental assessments
▪️ Demonstrate tooth brushing
▪️ Advice on dental food
▪️ Dental charting

Our nurses assist with all dentals, mainly focusing on the anaesthetic. However, often two nurses are involved and one will scale and polish the teeth whilst the other monitors 🩺

All dentals come home with a complimentary aftercare pack which includes information about dental care, toothbrushing, a dental chew, sachet of toothpaste and a toothbrush. A nurse can demonstrate toothbrushing at discharge or a post op check. If your pet has had teeth extracted, we would not usually start toothbrushing for at least a week🪥

One of our nurses, Rebecca recently completed the Oral Care Certificate. On completing certificates and CPD, our nurses gain further knowledge on which they can improve the quality of care which we can provide for your pets.

If you have any questions about dental care or booking in for a dental, please contact either surgery on 01228 521 393 or 01228 585 585 ☎️
