I don’t often share other podcasts since we do our own but this is so relevant and released yesterday - we were literally talking about Dr Mech at the behavioural weekend in Yorkshire.

Poor Dr Mech has for many years had to explain his retraction and watch the dog world pick what they wanted from it.
But very simply pack theory in zoo animals with non-related animals can’t exist.

In wild animals dominance of course exists.

I left behaviourism behind many years ago and instead studied with the experts in Ethology, attempting to make sense from a better and not so emotive science.

Mech has studied wolves in their natural and unnatural habitats for over 50 years and is the expert in this field.

Trainers everywhere please spend the time to listen from the horses mouth…

Well it looks like it's time to publish this week's schedule of Group Training Walks:

With the bridge still being closed for the foreseeable, Rob is going to do a Tuesday morning walk at St Cyrus Nature Reserve at 10am. This way any of you North of the river can get to a walk without a crazy round trip!

Also please note the slightly later starting time of 10am for Montrose this week, this is to avoid the worst of the rush hour traffic on the diversion routes.

Tuesday: St Cyrus Nature Reserve 10am

Wednesday: Forfar Loch 9.30am

Thursday: Montrose Aerodrome 10am

Friday: Montrose Aerodrome 10am.

Our latest offering podcast 76

Dawn hasn't seen Percival for at least 6 weeks, when he was first picked up. The change in him is remarkable. He lay down in Starbucks with very relaxed body language. He was alert and curious but not anxious, despite being next to a table with two noisy kids. At no point did he have to be given instructions on what to do.
His lead was loose.

And this led Jess and Dawn to talking about how much humans have a need to control everything, even in a positive way.
We teach puppies obedience and then control their every move. We do the same with kids - trying to control what they do so they don't get in trouble.

The need for control often comes from our own anxieties and issues. Accept that it is a normal human reaction, but then ask "What next?" rather than trying to control everything that happens.

Percival hit 12 weeks and started doing some innate behaviours - he started barking at people. This was not something that he could carry on doing, but also something that he shouldn't be told off for because we could end up with a very anxious dog. Teaching him that it's not ok (with a pattern interrupt) and getting him to do an alternate behaviour has led to a dog that can relax as he knows what's expected of him.

Jess introduces the word "Matriarchy" and how she’s been using that recently to discuss the leadership we use to cooperate with our dogs

Hopefully you've all made it through the storm without any damage or injuries.
Unfortunately there is no prospect of there being a route from St Cyrus to Montrose until at least Monday/Tuesday so there won't be any walks until then.

Guinevere has been on an extended sleepover in Montrose and went down to inspect the state of the aerodrome/Kinnaber today and she says its hard work avoiding fallen trees!

Stay safe everyone, see you soon.

Well considering there's a RED weather warning out its fair to say there will NOT be any training walks tomorrow or Friday. If its cleared up by Sunday we will have an Adventure Walk but watch this space.

Guinevere has been out and about experiencing the world, yesterday she went to sniff around Laurencekirk Pet Supplies, she's now all stocked up on quality food in time for the Adventure Walk tomorrow!

The Adventure Walks are a fun, social way to explore different areas of Angus with a group of dogs and like-minded owners.

We walk for around 2.5hrs-ish, exploring as we go and taking plenty of time to have fun.

The price is £15/dog, please bring weather appropriate clothing, drinks and human snacks as well as plenty of training food for your dog!

Tomorrow we will meet at the Aerodrome in Montrose at 12 noon and go for a ramble around the lesser used paths of Kinnaber.

See you there!

Little Hades is brother to our Percival & Guinevere.

And yes they are out learning about their world from very young and no we don’t count the minutes of exercise! If you want robust, resilient, reliable, confident and stable dogs then you must get them out to see the world and what’s going to be normal for them as YOUR adult dog.

I don’t need a dog to be ok around helicopters but I do need friendly and calm around new people and dogs, especially dogs that haven’t yet learned how to be socially stable.

Our pups development is currently being used as educational footage for you to learn more …
