Our practice is taking part in the Antibiotic Amnesty this November !

What to do if you have leftover or unused antibiotics:

💊 Return them to your vet practice for safe disposal.

💊 Inappropriate disposal of unused antibiotics could contribute to antimicrobial resistance and pollute the environment through waterways, affecting our wildlife.

💊 Don’t ever give your pet, or any pet for which they haven’t been prescribed, left-over or out of date antibiotics.

💊 Using antibiotics when not needed could risk side effects, delay an accurate diagnosis for your pet, mean that your pet’s condition may not be treatable, and contributes to antimicrobial resistance.

November is National Diabetes Month !🐾

The most common symptoms of diabetes in cats are increased thirst and urination, appetite changes and weight loss (although many cats are still overweight at diagnosis).

What should you do if you find a suspected stray cat?

We often see many cats brought into practice after going on their daily wander round the block! So here are a few tips on what you should do if you find a cat on the street:

🐾If the cat seems friendly and approachable, is not injured and has a collar or some form of identification, then it is most likely an outdoor cat on their daily rounds!

🐾If you have seen the cat often and suspect it is lost then consider posting on social media or community groups to help locate the owner. Try door knocking in the area you have seen the cat to check if they live nearby.

🐾After exhausting the options above then think about taking the cat to the nearest vets to be scanned for a microchip (only do this if it is safe to get the cat into a carrier).

🐾If you find a suspected feral cat that is not used to human contact, to avoid injury it is best to contact a charity such as the RSPCA who may be able to help.

🐾If the cat is visibly injured or in bad health and needs medical attention urgently, then take the cat to your nearest vets immediately.

🐾If you find a suspected stray cat with kittens, unless they are injured or at risk it is best to leave them for a few days. If anyone tries to move them, the mother may reject the kittens. After a few days, she'll often move them anyway once she realises you know where they are.

The 11th November is a day dedicated to honouring military personnel who lost their lives in service to their country.

The date commemorates the armistice signed at the end of World War I on November 11th 1918.

Wearing a poppy is a show of support for the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces, veterans and their families. It represents all those who lost their lives on active service, from the beginning of the First World War right up to present day 🌷

Today is Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day.

Lymphoma is a common cancer seen in pet dogs.

It is more common in middle aged dogs (typically 6-9 years old) and can affect any breed of dog, but is seen more commonly in; Boxers, Bull Mastiffs, Basset Hounds, St Bernards, Scottish Terriers, Airedale Terriers and Bulldogs.

Wednesday 6th November marks National Stress Awareness Day, which seeks to raise awareness of the negative effects that stress can have on our health.

negatively impact our mood, body, and mind. This is where our pets play an important role: they can greatly help reduce stress and boost mental well-being.

📍Interacting with pets has a soothing effect on the body, helping to lower blood pressure, ease anxiety, and increase feelings of social support.

📍Petting or cuddling animals can release oxytocin, a hormone that promotes relaxation and bonding, while also lowering cortisol levels, which are linked to stress.

This year our practice, along with many others, will be taking part in the 2024 Antibiotic Amnesty ! 💊

Throughout November 2024 we are asking pet owners to return any unused or leftover antibiotic medications to us for safe disposal.

🐾Please drop off any unused medications to us at the practice - you can hand them in to a vet, nurse or the reception team.

🐾This medication might be left-over from a recent prescription, antibiotics that you didn’t need or out-of-date medication.

🐾Returning antibiotics that have not been used will help to prevent antimicrobial resistance and reduce pollution to the environment through waterways that will affect our wildlife.

Let’s keep antibiotics working and our environment safe, together! 🌏🐾💊

The gorgeous Skye 🌟

Skye visited us recently for her monthly osteoarthritis injection and was a really good girl as always!

💉 Librela Injections are a monthly antibody injection that provides long term pain control for canine osteoarthritis.

💉 In practice, we offer these monthly injections to our more senior patients or patients struggling with mobility due to osteoarthritis.

💉 Initial consultations are done by a vet and ongoing injections can be done with a nurse, as long as your pet has been seen by a vet in the last 6 months.

💉 Many pet owners that start their canine friends on Librela, notice that their mobility improves and they ultimately have an improved quality of life.

💉 As you can see below we have also started using non-slip mats in our consult rooms, aiming to make a more comfortable environment for our older patients.
