This handsome boy came in for his 6 month health check and was an absolute angel, maybe even a little bit too friendly after giving one of our nurses lots of big slobbery kisses!

Rolo's gnashers are some of the best we've seen and Rolo's parents are doing a wonderful job at using dental additives and vet approved treats in his diet to maintain his gorgeous teeth.

After his 6 month health check with a nurse, Rolo's mum now knows why she should incorporate teeth brushing into his dental care.

Kisses from Rolo 💋💋

Having your teeth brushed is a strange experience, and many pets will panic if it is
not introduced slowly and gently. It may take a month or two to reach a point of “proper brushing” – this is normal and nothing to worry about.

What else could pet insurance cover?

Many owners think that taking out pet insurance is just about covering the cost of veterinary care. While that is important, a good policy will also cover you for some of
the other unexpected costs of being a pet owner.

Remember not all pet insurance is the same so it is a good idea to check the cover provided and ask if you will be paying more for claiming.

🦷February marks Dental Health Awareness Month🦷

Did you know that as well as brushing our own teeth, we should also be doing the same with our pets !?

Brushing our pets teeth isn't always something we remember to do but it is extremely important. Just like in humans, our pets can develop dental disease which can ultimately lead to pain, infection and tooth loss.

Regular brushing and dental hygiene additives can help to remove plaque and tartar build up, reducing the risk of dental diseases occurring.

This month we will be putting a focus on providing education around dental health car for your pets including, how to brush your pets teeth, why dental care is so important and some dental products that are available.

Stay tuned for more dental health care advice 🦷🪥😸

🚨NEW EQUIPMENT ALERT🚨

"𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠" 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦!

We are pleased to announce that we can now offer 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐲 to our patients. Endoscopes are long flexible cameras that we can use to look into the body, with a special channel through which an assortment of contraptions can be passed. This nifty bit of kit is a great way to identify things that may otherwise have not been diagnosed, and allows us to avoid expensive and invasive surgery all together.

For example, Billy has raided the bin and swallowed some spiky plastic. Making him sick would be dangerous because it could damage his oesophagus (food pipe) on the way back up. In the past we may have had to operate on his stomach which is more invasive. Instead, with Billy under general anaesthetic, we put a thick plastic stomach tube down his oesophagus, use the endoscope to pull the material into the tube and remove it safely.

Billy can be back home in time to shout at the postman.

We hope that your fur-baby never needs it, but if our endoscope saves just one life, then it will have been worth getting !

🐾🌟Karen and Merlin🐾🌟

Meet Karen, one of Hearing Dogs’ amazing volunteer dog trainers. We asked Karen about why she volunteers:

“My lovely mum has been deaf since childhood and has had multiple operations on her ears over the years and now has a BAHA hearing aid. When she removes this at night, she hears nothing.”

“She doesn't have a hearing dog herself but it's because of her I got involved with this amazing charity and became a volunteer. I've witnessed her struggles and the lack of understanding from people about her deafness and I wanted to do something to help improve a deaf person's life.”

Karen has been volunteering for ten years and it’s been Poodles all the way. Before current trainee Merlin, there were Jessie, Peach, Sonny, and Ziggy. Ahead of Merlin's final assessment, Karen has said:

“I absolutely adore him and will miss Merlin so much as he makes me laugh everyday. But I feel so excited that someone out there is going to be told about him very soon. Whoever gets him will have an extremely loyal friend who will look after and adore them.”

For more information on the wonderful charity Hearing Dogs who we are currently working with, please head over to their website or page.

🪥While it's a frequent issue, bad breath in pets should not be considered normal. Often, it's a sign of underlying health problems that need attention!

Blue Monday typically falls on the third Monday of January and is often considered the “saddest day of the year”.

Fortunately, we all know that our pets are great at cheering us up, and here’s how
they can help raise your spirits this January:

💙 Studies show that interacting with pets; like stroking their fur or playing with them, releases oxytocin (the "feel-good" hormone) and lowers cortisol levels (the stress hormone).

💙 Walking a dog or playing with a cat keeps you active, which boosts endorphins and helps combat sadness or depression.

💙 Pets are very intuitive, meaning they can sense when you are feeling down. Their comforting presence alone can be enough to soothe any feelings of stress, anxiety or sadness.

How do your pets help you beat the January blues? Share your stories and photos in the comments! 🐶🐰🐹🐱🐭

🍩Recognising Pet Obesity🍩

Overindulged during the holiday season? As many of us embark on New Year’s resolution diet and fitness regimes, lots of our pets would benefit from accompanying us. It is estimated that up to 65% of dogs and 50% of cats in the UK are obese.

Being overweight leaves pets at greater risk of conditions like diabetes, cancer, heart disease and arthritis and studies have shown that it can dramatically reduce their overall life expectancy.

Unfortunately we have had a deceased male tabby cat brought into the Urmston branch this evening (found in the Flixton area).

He is chipped but the chip is not registered.

Please contact the Monton branch tomorrow or Urmston from Monday onwards if you have any information or suspect this may be your cat.

📌Salt and Grit on Paws📌

As we move into the colder months of January and February, the chance of snow and ice increases and therefore you may find yourself heading out on a frosty dog walk more often than not!

Check out our top tips below on keeping your dog safe when out and about in snow and ice:

❄️ Remember, if the weather is really bad and you don’t think it's safe to head out, then there is no harm in skipping the odd dog walk and playing games indoors.

❄️ Salt and grit used for de-icing roads can pose risks to a dog’s paws. It can irritate their paw pads, causing redness, cracking or peeling. In an attempt to remove the salt, dogs may lick their paws, but this can lead to them ingesting chemicals that can upset their stomachs or cause more severe issues.

❄️Grit found on the roads sometimes causes micro-cuts and abrasions on paw pads, increasing the risk of infection.

‼️Prevention and Care:

🐾Use dog boots to shield paws from salt and grit.

🐾Apply a paw wax or balm before walks to create a protective barrier.

🐾Rinse and wipe your dog’s paws with warm water and a soft cloth after walks.

🐾Check paws regularly for cuts or signs of irritation.

🐾Trim fur between paw pads to prevent ice and grit accumulation.

‼️First Aid for Irritated Paws:
Rinse thoroughly with warm water and then apply a soothing paw balm or petroleum jelly. If irritation persists or there are signs of infection (redness, swelling, limping), please call us to book an appointment!
