❗️ Warm weather Update❗️

The forecast next week is for temperatures which are set to be 21 degrees and above.

As a reminder of my Warm Weather Policy:-

* Walks times may vary and could take place earlier before the heat of the day.

* Walks will be to shady woods where we will do a slow mooch with some enrichment activities.

* Walks may be shorter and only last as long as I deem is safe for each dog on the walk, taking into consideration age and breed (flat faced breeds, elderly dogs and puppies are at a greater risk).

* Journeys in my van will be kept as short as possible. I have air conditioning, fans and for each dog, in their own separate crate, cooling mats and fresh water.

* In extreme heat, when temperatures reach 24 degrees or above then dogs will be offered a 1:1 garden enrichment visit instead of their usual walk.

Thank you all for your support.
Kate 😊🐾

This ⬇️ Is why I combine breed-specific training games and activities with a countryside walk. It’s never about how many miles we walk.

Over the decades, in addition to their hunting and retrieving ability, gundogs have also been bred for their sociability, friendliness, intelligence, and trainability (biddable nature).

These traits have made them extremely attractive and desirable for families. And so, a large proportion of the gundog puppies born into the world every year head off to be pet gundogs with no expectation of working in the shooting field.

There is no doubt that gundogs do make excellent pets.

All my working dogs are pets first. They live in my home and sleep while I work, they stay close to me on our daily walks, and would be just as happy to join me at the pub and on a trip to the beach as they would on a shoot day.

But this is because their in-built, genetic “gundog” needs are being met.

There is no shame in wanting to own a gundog breed while having absolutely no desire or intention to work them on a shoot.

But there is a growing danger that more and more ‘working line’ dogs are missing out on vital opportunities to do what they were bred to do as they end up in pet homes with owners who don’t realise the importance of gundog training even for non-working dogs.

In this month's blog, we explore the implications of not doing gundog training, the benefits of breed-specific training and what ‘hobby’ gundog training involves for beginners.

If you know someone who has a pet dog that would benefit from participating in gundog training, even if they will never go on a shoot, please consider sharing this post or blog link with them.

I’ve revisited some foundations in Gwen’s scentwork.
We have been doing lots of motivational searches alongside exploring different ways to teach her an indication.
She’s learning to sit and indicate, which is really helping to avoid any unwanted behaviour of pawing or biting of the hides.
I was really pleased recently when she did this lovely sit and freeze indication during a wall search for Kong. Our hard work is beginning to show 🐾😊

It’s the start of a new month so here’s a little peak into what we will be doing on our walks during the month of June.

All the dogs that come on my adventures are regular dogs. They all come out for at least one walk a week with me and some of my dogs have as many as 6 or 8 walks every week. This means I can really get to know each dog well and I write target plans for each dog, thinking about their individual needs.
Take the whistle stop for example which we will be practicing this month. Some of the dogs can already do this at a distance and when going away from me, others might be working on this at a distance but coming towards me and some dogs are pairing the 1 whistle pip with an auto sit or even just working on auto sits.

Each of our adventures combines a countryside walk with short little practice sessions of the exercises.

Handouts of the exercises are available to any of my walking clients if they would like to practice on their walks and I’m also available for 1-2-1 training sessions for which all regular dog walking clients receive a 10% discount.

Did you know, April is National Pet First Aid Awareness month?

At Sniff&Wagg Trails, I have your pets health and wellbeing at the forefront of everything I do. I understand that even with the best risk assessments and precautions, accidents can happen at anytime, which is why as well as having a full first aid kit in the van, I also carry a mini first aid kit on all my walks.

Canine first aid training is an essential part of any responsible dog walking service and a must requirement for your dog’s health and safety.
Finding a dog walker with canine first aid skills means peace of mind for you and your dog.

I am qualified in Canine First Aid and CPR and chose to do my training in person with
I also hope to refresh my skills with her in the near future.

“I can’t imagine not rewarding with treats. I can’t imagine not seeing my dogs tippy-toe dance around when they know it’s time to train. I can’t imagine my dogs not seeing me as a safe harbour and Pez dispenser of caloric joy. I just can’t imagine”

I just made the joy-sucking error of looking at the website of a dog trainer who seems to love aversive tools and, by their own proclamation, “We don’t use any treats in our training methods”. In case the hapless reader was unclear, they add for clarity purposes that they “Never reward with ...

Shake it…shake it off…

A recent study by two researchers in France looked at sniffing, pulse rate, and leash length on walks. Sixty-one dogs were taken on three separate walks, five minutes each walk, once with a 1.5m leash, once with a 5m leash, and once without a leash at all (walk order was randomized for each dog). Off-leash dogs sniffed the most, more than 3x as long as the dogs on short leashes. Dogs on long leashes spent nearly as much time as unleashed dogs sniffing, almost 3x as long as dogs on short leashes.

This study also found that sniffing resulted in lowered pulse rates, and the more intensely they sniffed, the more their pulse rates lowered. Pulse rate was also lowered when dogs “shook off” during walks on all leash lengths. The “shake off” behavior was often seen when the dog’s pulse rate was particularly high.

We have great fun on our walks practicing and improving our parkour skills on some safe, low level natural obstacles.

Parkour has many benefits:

🐾 combines agility exercises, balance work, self-control and canine conditioning.

🐾 creates a fun, physical and mentally challenging activity.

🐾 builds trust between the dog and handler, as your dog knows you are there to support and guide them.

🐾 builds body awareness as your dog has to think about how they balance their weight and think about how they go up and down on the obstacles.

🐾 builds confidence.

Knowing your dog’s capabilities and being mindful of what you ask your dog to do is really important. You can also have your dog wear a harness and a lead so you can easily support them if necessary.
