I do a lot of activities on my walks with my spaniels but they also get freetime for some natural sniffs.
They love to indulge in scent and here they are exploring all the wildlife smells.
But although they are getting to do their own thing with their noses down on the ground busy sniffing, they are still connected to me!
Watch how when I move, they notice and move with me.
From as early as 8 weeks old when we first brought Gwen home, I have taught her that being close to me pays off.
It’s important to start this early to build the foundations of muscle memory of the behaviours you want.

Group walks are not a simple case of letting dogs off lead for up to an hour of mischief doing their own thing.
Walking multiple dogs can be challenging and it’s important to have their focus. We achieve this in a number of ways and I like to do exercises as individuals as well as the whole group.

What does, you sitting down on your walk mean for your dog?
I love to play lots of training games and gundog activities on my walks with my dogs. They are full of life and typical fast little spaniels who do everything at speed.
However, I also want my dogs to be calm and be able to chill out even in exciting environments surrounded by wildlife!!!
I have spent a lot of time teaching this, to begin with I use treats to help them learn. Now they have learnt that me sitting down is their cue to just come over and chill next to me, treats are no longer needed.
If you were to ask a spaniel what there favourite things to do are, I can bet you that sitting around, being still and doing nothing is not really up there!
However as I’ve built tons of value in this position I think they really quite enjoy it and it’s good to see they have the cognitive ability to switch from being busy and doing to being calm and still.

Teaching your dog to target your outstretched hand with their nose is a really useful skill for your dog to have and it has many uses. From teaching your dog to not jump up and to greet people calmly, to giving your dog something to focus on during vet visits. ✅ Here are two ways that I like to use it while out on a walk:🐾 Stepping to the side of the path and asking my dog to touch my hand while I let another dog or human pass by, and then I can continue on my walk.🐾 it requires my dog to come right up close to my body, enabling me to gently catch hold of their collar when needed. Let me know in the comments ⬇️if you have taught your dog a sustained hand touch and what you find it helpful for?If you’d like more help with your dogs recall, get in touch. “Here Hare Here ……. Here Hare Here”is a great memorable quote from one of my all time favourite films. It’s also the cue for one of the fun activities I play with my dogs. Do you ever struggle to get your dog to come away from scent when you need them to ❓. Dogs love exploring smells, you may have noticed that if one dog in a group of dogs, finds something interesting then all the others will rush over to have a sniff too. In this activity, I’m the one to find an interesting smell (hidden dropped treats) and I call my dogs over and encourage them to sniff and search where I tell them. The dogs all love this game as they are guaranteed to always find something and I love it because it’s builds our connection and their motivation for them to listen to me in exciting environments. You don’t always have to use food for this game, tennis balls and rabbit balls are also great items for your dogs to find. #bemorespaniel #bemoredog #huntingtogether #focusandconnection #recalltraining #domorewithyourdog #dogwalker #arnside #silverdale #milnthorpe #arnsidedogwalker #arnsidedogtrainer
I love teaching this and it makes me happy seeing the dogs running ahead to then just stop in their tracks, turn to face me and wait further instruction. #stopwhistle #gundogwalk#gundogadventurewalks #arnside #dogwalker #silverdale #dogwalkingservices
The whistle stop is just one of the fun things I like to train on my walks, but it needs to be trained in a few different ways to really proof it.
Keeping my group sizes small enables me to spend time with the dogs to teach them. Ted and Gertie are practicing stopping while moving away from me. I make sure they are successful by starting with low distractions and a short distance. Over time, we will slowly increase the distance and the distractions, the ultimate aim being that the dog is able to stop even when they are running towards something they want!

Tonight my dogs are having raw meaty bones while listening to Taiko Drums 🪘
It’s a tough weekend but there’s already lots of advice out there around dogs and fireworks so I know you are all doing what you can this weekend to help your dogs and keep them well and safe.
Much love ❤️

Happy Birthday Pinocchio 🐾😊
It’s a stormy Friday evening here and the weather forecast for tomorrow is not looking brilliant either 💨🌧️💨🌧️
We will not be venturing out for a dog walk, so Instead I have some scentwork activities planned to keep my dogs busy and fulfilled.
Are you also planning on skipping a walk or two?
If you are or if you would like some ideas for the coming winter evenings, then keep an eye on my social media pages over the weekend. I’ll be posting some ideas for some simple scentwork, enrichment and training games that you can play inside with your dog 🐶
Stay safe everyone
Much ❤️
