I’m out about treating and can honestly still shocked about how many horse/ponies I see in fields full of ragwort. I just need to add this doesn’t apply to any of my clients today, there fields are clear.

Ragwort

There are many posts at the moment informing readers that ragwort is an unjustifiably persecuted plant with a whole set of myths promoted by the equine industry. While this plant is undeniably pretty when it comes into flower (now is the flowering season), if found in our horses pastures it is simply a plant growing in the wrong place.
What you need to know about Ragwort:
• Ragwort is a common w**d that is easy to identify due to its bright yellow flowers
• The plant is highly toxic to horses, and if eaten can lead to liver failure. The damage it does is incurable and can be fatal
• Clinical signs to look out for are: the horse may become lethargic, lose weight, show signs of colic, head pressing and they can even go blind
• It is essential you remove the plant early as the young w**d is less bitter and so more palatable for the horse
The best way to remove the plant is to pull the whole plant and roots up. Make sure you wear gloves as it can also be harmful to humans. You should then place the w**d in a bag (feed bags are ideal) and burn it.

Everyone who uses fleece rugs/ coolers on their clipped horses, I certainly have in the past, have a look at this… it makes sense when you think about it …

FLEECE RUGS/COOLERS!!!
sorry for shouting lol just gettin everyone's attention!
When clipped don't leave fleeces on your four legged friends overnight. The fleece sticks and grabs onto the short hair like velcro and pulls at it, which can be uncomfortable, and in some cases I'm seeing horses coming up in hives afterwards. This chap from today is the third one I've seen in the last couple of weeks. Thankfully he didn't need a body clip and just had his legs blended, as clipping over an existing rash would only add to the irritation

Ever notice how you often get static shocks off them when taking them off your horse? Because of the friction they create on clipped hair as the horse moves!

*fine to use to dry after baths just don't leave them on overnight particularly under other rugs*

You may wonder why we pull back into the syringe when giving injections in the vein. This picture explains why. We don't pull back to make sure we're in the vessel, we do it to make sure we're in the RIGHT vessel. Today I went to give an injection and pulled back and saw blood brighter than I wanted. I decided to go and get a new dose of sedation and once again pulled back and then gave my dose of sedation. The syringe on the left was my first injection and the syringe on the right was my second injection. Does anyone know why I shouldn't have injected that first syringe? And had I injected that first injection, what would have happened?

Simple but good advise

Pelvic Flexure Impactions: I've seen 3 colics this week all with pelvic flexure impactions. This occurs due to horses drinking less, exercising less or getting a drier diet (hay is drier than grass). To prevent the condition make sure your horse drinks plenty of water (My tip: put apples in the water bucket or try some peppermint cordial), keep them exercised (lunge them if they cant go out in the field), keep feeds sloppy and monitor faecal output! The earlier we catch it the easier and quicker it can be treated!
The photo shows the location of the pelvic flexure, note the U bend and the narrowing of the intestine- its no wonder its a prime location for a blockage!

Too commonly seen and causes so many problems

𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒌𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒅
Everyone likes to talk about the harm caused when a horse is ridden behind the vertical... but have you ever wondered why?

One (of the many) problems with a BTV position is that encourages incorrect flexion in the neck. In a healthy horse, the head will flex up and down at the first cervical vertebrae. This bone is known as the atlas or C1.

In an effort to avoid excessive pressure caused by a harsh bit, rider or gadgets (especially draw reins) many horses will begin flexing at the 3rd vertebrae (C3). "Broken at the 3rd" creates incorrect movement throughout the body and will quickly lead to pain and damage. Once a horse begins moving in this manner, it is extremely hard for them to unlearn and they may continue this harmful posture even when at or above the vertical.

I’m useless at remembering to take photos and posting them! But little billy looked so chilled this morning and really came forward for his monthly top up. Billy has pollen allergies and salt therapy has really helped keep symptoms controlled this year.

It’s been a busy week catching up with a few of my regulars and the lovely DJ started his initial cleanse this week too.
