Meet Menace & Rogue (points to whoever gets the name theme) - the wonder dogs of Vicky (K9 Kindergarten ). I met Rogue (on the right) very early on last year when he modelled for me for one of my photography challenges for Unleashed Education , and then met Menace when we held the puppy graduation photos for Vicky's puppy class of 2024.

These pups are amazing - both are American Shepherds and have so much personality!

Fern and Millie are very spoiled pups who happen to live on a working farm in mid Wales. I visited them last Summer to photograph them as a wedding gift to their humans from family.

We held the session on the family's farm land, so the dogs were super happy running around the land that they know so well. I wanted to get some photos that grounded them in this time and space, so when we passed through this gate I knew we had to use it as a prop with them peeking through. I just love how they arranged themselves on different levels of the gate - they knew the assignment!

At home on the farm was the perfect location for Fern and Millie, but where do you think the perfect location for a shoot would be for your pups? Let me know in the comments - I'm really intrigued 🤔

𝐅𝐀𝐐 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 - "𝐌𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨.”

This is a comment a hear time and again when I’m exhibiting at a trade show or event and people walking by see the artwork of dogs on display. And my answer is: honestly, it doesn’t matter how squirmy or energetic your dog is, I’m ridiculously confident that I’ll be able to get amazing images captured of them.

The reality is that I only need a split second (a blink and you miss it kind of timeframe) to capture a gorgeous image of even the most wriggly of dogs.To achieve a perfectly posed portrait, then yes, there will be planning, teamwork and a little bit of bribery involved, but we will get the shot.

And getting a posed portrait is only half the fun of a session - don’t forget, what we’re aiming to do is to capture your dog’s personality in a freeze frame, and if your dog is all about the chaos and the energy, then we need to capture that too. This is where we move to action shots and it’s here that the wriggly, energetic dogs come into their element.

Check out these portraits of the most wriggly dogs....see, it can be done. And if you've got a wriggle monster too, give me a shout - we can make amazing memories together.

Had a little look back over the last year in photos. It's been a hell of a year - lots of good, one very big bad, lots of creativity and new adventures. Let's see what 2025 has in store.

2024 feels like it went by so quickly and yet so slowly at the same time. For me, it's been an emotional year.

How flipping amazing does Loki look! This has got to be one of the most EPIC photographs I've taken this year.

I've been so desperate to share this image in full because I love it so much! This was a Christmas present so has mostly been under wraps but now the big day is over, I can share it in all it's glory.

We shot this as Loki's session was coming to an end - the evening sun was moving closer to the horizon and the clouds were getting darker and more formidable, but it all added to the atmosphere and drama. We found a rock pool to reflect Loki in and with a bit of patience managed to position him perfectly so that he was fully reflected in the water. I may have have gotten a bit wet shooting this (nothing unusual there) and also may have done a little happy dance when seeing the photo on the back of the camera!

This is a stitch of about 15 or so images so I wasn't completely sure how well it would turn out until I started the editing process, but I'm absolutely over the moon with it. And to top it off, I entered it into the International Pet Photography Awards and scored a Silver with Distinction for it and it also scored in the Top 100 of over 3,600 entries from around the world!

If you love a bit of epic-ness, crave adventure with your dog and love a bit of bespoke artwork, then I think we need to chat!

Do you have a Pet Business that's ready to stand out from the crowd in 2025?

I don’t know about you, but this year has absolutely flown past.

Before we know it, January will be knocking on our door, and a whole new year awaits us.

How would you feel starting off your 2025 knowing that you’ve got amazing, bespoke imagery that represents you and your brand already in the pipeline, ready for you to use and roll out throughout the whole of next year.

That’s got to be a pretty good feeling hasn’t it?

Commercial photography offers more than just amazing imagery for you to use across any media (website, socials, in print etc). It also comes with an authenticity and professionalism that elevates you and your brand, and speaks volumes to your audience.

If you want to hit the ground running and get ahead in 2025, then get in touch so we can chat about your business, your ethos and how I can help you stand out from the crowd.

I’ve been lucky enough to work with some truly amazing businesses (both big and small) in 2024, and I would love to help you next.

It's December, so it's officially ok to bring up the C word 🎄🎅🎄

I shot my Christmas card sessions a week or so ago and this has got to be my most favourite Christmas card photo EVER! These girls smash it every single time! What do you think??

Cards have been delivered and I spent this afternoon folding and packaging them all up. It's beginning to feel a bit Christmassy now!

If you're struggling with Christmas gift ideas - remember, I have Gift Vouchers available - they're perfect for the animal lovers in your life. Pop me a message if you want to know more.

Ok, seriously, can you get much cuter than this!?! I don't think it's possible to put into words how much I love this shot.

Bueno the lab puppy totally rocked his session in the studio. He worked so hard he needed a little lie down on the sofa at the end. The orange works so well against his yellow fur, it just makes everything pop!

This sofa has got to be one of my best investments! I bought it for £50 from a charity shop and I'm so glad I did! It has been an amazing prop for so many of the dogs that have visited the studio, and it's the perfect place for owners to chill while we look through the images on the TV.

I had some amazing news last week that I’m super proud about (and late to share 🙈). The results from the International Pet Photography awards were in at the beginning of the week and I’m so chuffed to say that 12 of my images achieved awards (I'll share them all properly soon)..

I tend to set myself (maybe unrealistically) high standards when it comes to my photography, which I know manifests itself as a bit of a perfectionism problem sometimes. But it looks like the pursuit of perfectionism is somewhat justified because I managed to achieve two Silver Distinctions (with one of those being scored in the Top 100 of the over 3,600 images submitted), 5 Silvers, 3 Bronze Distinctions and 2 Bronze awards.

I’m absolutely over the moon. And to top it off, I also achieved Associate International Pet Photographer Accreditation status, which I'm super chuffed about...only 18 Accreditations were awarded in this, inaugural, year and I'm so proud to to be included in them.

The International Pet Photography Awards is always amazing and inspiring. This year there were over 3,600 entries from all over the world and the standard was absolutely phenomenal...you can check out the awarded images at: https://www.petphotographyawards.com/ (seriously, have a look - they are amazing!)

Entering awards is a great way for me to hone and craft my skills because the feedback that is given for each photo by the judges (the top pet photographers in the world) is invaluable. It really makes me think about my images outside of the context of how they were taken and reflect on how they can be perceived and interpreted by someone who wasn't there at the moment the shutter was pressed - are there any distractions I've missed that detract from the overall feel of the image, or anything I could have done to enhance the mood. It really opens my eyes and propels me to work harder and explore new techniques and skills.

I have to say a huge thank you to International Pet Photography Awards and Unleashed Education for always pushing the boundaries of the Pet Photography world - you guys make it an inspiring place to be.

And a massive thank you to my clients who have trusted me to photograph their pets and indulged me in my sometimes weird requests at our sessions ❤

Squatting in the middle of a river to get the perfect shot, just a normal day in the office here!

How gorgeous are these waterproof collars from I had so much fun photographing these (and yes, that did involve wading into the middle of a river and getting my butt wet - but I think it was worth it!). And I can definitely confirm that these collars are well and truly waterproof - which my adventure dog lovers will appreciate because you know how hard it is to find collars that are both beautiful and practical!

Commercial pet photography is something that I'm gaining confidence with. It's a completely different ball game to portrait work, but I've thoroughly enjoyed the commercial work I've done so far this year. Helping businesses shine a light on themselves, their products and services with images that reflect their branding, ethos and beliefs is so important, and is a really special thing to be allowed to help with.

I’m looking forward to working with more pet business brands (big and small) in the future to create high quality imagery that does the talking for you.

So if you have a pet product or service based business and have been looking for ways to elevate your brand or your social media presence, I would love to hear from you.

To get in touch send me a message.

I can’t believe I haven’t shared this panorama of these gorgeous girls yet!

We took this in the springtime when the wild garlic was in full bloom - the smell in the woods was unbelievable. I had to make this in to a super wide panorama to give the scene justice - the wild garlic just goes on and on.

I love shooting multiple dogs - it doesn’t always happen in one take (and this one definitely didn’t) but it’s worth the effort we put into arranging the dogs during the actual shoot and the time spent in editing afterwards.

Creating that perfect family portrait for you and your pups is something that’s really special for me. It probably won’t be smooth sailing, there will be plenty of bloopers during the process and I will probably boss you around just a little bit, but I promise it’s worth it.

This was little Lottie (the teeny tiny collie’s) first time in front of the camera. She’s a rescue from Diane Hart The Sheepdog/Collie Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre and was in a harness and lead for the entire session, but with a little bit of photoshop magic, they’re gone.

𝙴𝙼𝙱𝚁𝙰𝙲𝙴 𝙰𝙳𝚅𝙴𝙽𝚃𝚄𝚁𝙴

I love a location session.

I always think of them as a mini adventure for you and your pup, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It's a few hours where the noise of the world goes quiet, and all that matters is you, your dog and the beautiful connection you share.

If you've ever wanted to see behind the curtain of the pet photography editing process, wanted to hone your own editing skills or see how and (more importantly) why we do what we do in the digital darkroom, then join me and 40+ other pet photographers from across the globe as we share our secrets in Hair of the Dog's Edit-Palooza.

I'll be showing you how I added some drama to this image of Millie as she sat amongst the ferns. We'll be tackling the greens (the bane of every photographer's existence in the spring and summer), some general tidying of her face (including tear stains), incorporating pieces from other images to bulk out the ferns, and then adding a pop of drama to finish it off.

There are so many amazing photographers involved in Edit-Palooza, covering both studio and location photography - and you'll have access to the raw files so you can follow along with the edits as we go.

Facebook very helpfully reminded me recently that I’ve been photographing your pets for 12 years!

That twelve years has flown by so quickly.

What started as a passion project photographing my own boy, has evolved into a fully fledged business photographing pets all over the country (and sometimes, beyond).

In those twelve years I’ve learned so much, not just about my photography skills and techniques, but about life, business, dogs, friendships (the list can go on).

I owe so much to each of my clients that have trusted me to photograph their pets for them.

If I've photographed your pet at any point over the last 12 years, it would be amazing to hear from you - drop a photo of your pet in the comments, I'd love to see how they're doing now ❤

The Mucky Pup Photography Story

CELEBRATE DOG

Any human who is fortunate enough to be owned by a hound will have experienced the joy of pure, dog induced happiness. There’s just something uniquely special about dogs isn’t there, something that draws us to them, and them to us. This is why I choose to photograph them: to celebrate them.

You probably know by now, but in case you don’t, my name is Sarah and I am owned by Dexter the border collie. I’m also a dedicated dog photographer. You will most likely find me out and about in a beautiful part of Wales (frequently on the Gower) with my camera in hand, treats at the ready and a dog having a whale of a time posing for me so that I can create some beautiful artwork for their humans to treasure. You may ask why I do this, the only answer I can give you is because I genuinely believe that our dogs should be celebrated. They deserve to be celebrated because their impact on our lives is everlasting, even though their time with us can be fleeting.
