Advent Calendar Day 23: Train at Mealtimes

Did you know you can use your dog’s mealtime as a perfect training opportunity? Whether you’re working on basic obedience or advanced skills for the field, mealtime training is an easy way to fit practice into your busy day—even over Christmas!

🍖 Why Train at Mealtimes?
• Your dog is already focused on food, making it an ideal motivator.
• It’s a great chance to reinforce skills like recall, steadiness, sit, or retrieve.
• It helps mentally stimulate your dog, especially during the festive chaos.

🎄 Make It Fun and Productive:
• Use their meals for training cues instead of feeding from a bowl.
• Practice skills in different settings, from the kitchen to the garden.
• Keep sessions short and positive!

Check out our online courses and on-demand resources for inspiration and guidance. A little training each day goes a long way!

Advent Calendar Day 18: Recall Reminder

It is neither responsible nor safe to allow your dog to run up to other people, dogs, or livestock. Reliable recall is essential before you even consider letting your dog off the lead. If you’re unsure about your dog’s recall, keep them on a lead or a long line to ensure their safety and the safety of others.

Yesterday, in our village, a tragic incident occurred where three sheep were killed. This is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of control and training. Farmers and shepherds are within their rights to shoot dogs that worry livestock—a risk no one should take.

Invest in your dog’s training to build trust and reliability. Whether it’s basic recall or steadiness around distractions like livestock or game, we can help you achieve this. Together, we can keep everyone safe and enjoy stress-free walks.

Limping is a significant gait change that means something is wrong. The cause of the limp might be up for debate, but it will be linked to pain or discomfort.

It's safer and more beneficial for your dog to assume the presence of pain rather than the absence of pain.

One 2 One training session yesterday. Working on introduction to cold game

We started with some warm up exercises working including heel and some simple retrieves using dummies.

At Seadogs Training we always start and finish cold game training on dummies.

In this session we used the L*z Graham Retrieving Roll and a partridge for the first few retrieves after the initial dummy work.

I don’t like to drop game out on a short grass field, I always try to place it in some light cover or some longer grass. I do this to prevent the dogs from hit the bird to hard and to encourage a little hunting before picking up. The pick up is normally much neater too.

I also like to include a jump or obstacle to the exercise to give the dogs more to think about.

The training went very well and we moved on to using the cold game as a distraction and sent the dog for the dummy and it had to leave the Partridge.

We also covered split and directional retrieves before moving back to dummies to finish our training session.

If you want to book a cold game training session please email me at [email protected]
