Whether you're the owner of a new puppy or an older dog who could benefit from learning some manners, I can help with all areas of training and behaviour modification. Based in North London, I specialise in individual one-to-one home training. I only use kind, fair and effective methods as practised by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). I also focus on the special but sometimes confusing

relationship between children and dogs. Using positive reinforcement, your dog will learn that he/she is being rewarded for doing what you want. Training with ‘Dog on the Hill‘ will be an enjoyable way for your dog to learn and all methods used will be based on the most resent science and evidence based protocols. Training will be fast and simple and a wonderful way for you to bond with your dog. Dip CBM, is a full member and a Director of the APDT (MAPDT 01194). Jane is also a Director of the UK Training and Behaviour Charter. She has an Advanced Diploma in Canine Behaviour Management (passed with distinction) and is registered with the ABTC (animal behaviour and training council). Jane is a fully accredited scent-work instructor and Separation Anxiety specialist.

Who wouldn’t want to finish their week with a 🥰 🐶 cute puppy? Little 😇 Angel is extremely smart and in our first session she started to learn all about clicker training, and sitting and how valuable her name is. She also learnt that being brushed is pretty awesome too. Then she got extremely 😴 tired and needed to lie down….💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤

A Thursday fix of puppy cuteness 😍courtesy of Panda the Terrier. Panda is only twelve weeks and lives with two small children, one of whom is very scared of being jumped on and nipped by 🐼 panda’s puppy teeth 🦷 🦈. When children live with dogs, our first priority has to be safety and good 👍🏼 management while we start teaching reliable behaviours. If you’re struggling with your young puppy and their relationship with your children, please get in touch because I will be able to help you.

No matter how big or small your dog is, they will probably struggle when they hit adolescence (think of it as puppyhood part 2). Little Rizzo has been displaying behaviours that her owners are finding challenging, so today we discussed all aspects of her routine including sleep, exercise, training and enrichment. We’re going to keep a close eye on all of these areas so that we can guide and support her as she matures. We’ll definitely be adding some new skills to her repertoire too so that we can keep her teenage brain busy.

Cusco 🐶 was referred to me by his vet because he couldn’t cope with having strangers in his home and got very stressed if people gave him eye contact or went to touch him when outside. His owners have been so committed to helping him, and today not only could I walk past him and look at him, but I could sit in his home while he completely ignored me and relaxed on his mat. One of the areas that we addressed was the amount of sleep 💤 💤 that Cusco was (or wasn’t) getting and his owners have worked hard to ensure that he gets plenty of rest which has really helped.

Don’t be fooled by the 🥰 cuteness and fluff - Kody is a very smart little 🐶 pup. His owner is concerned about his scavenging of food items, and although she’s very sensible and chooses her battles, would like more management options. It’s challenging for us human animals to understand that dogs are scavengers, but we live in north London and there is a lot of rubbish for dogs to explore, sniff and eat a some of which could be toxic. Today we began by working on Kody’s focus, then we started to teach him to come away and leave items, which he did very well!

Larry’s ‘pawrents’ are expecting a baby very soon and this will most likely upset his routine - and just about everything else too! Over the past few weeks we’ve focused on gradually acclimating Larry (as much as we can) to the new arrival. His owners have taken this one sensible step at at a time so as not to overwhelm Larry. At the moment, they’re acclimating Larry to sleeping downstairs and away from their bedroom. We’ve also focussed on lead walking, and today we slowly introduced the pram and added a little movement too.

At nine months, Denise is finding it difficult to settle. This could be related to being a teenager with all the challenges that this stage of development brings. Our aim today, was to begin working on a protocol to help her relax and settle - as you can see, she took it rather literally. 🐶🐶🐾💤💤💤💤

This awesome piece of gorgeous fluff is Lucy. I began working with Lucy after her owners were referred to me by their vet. Lucy found having strangers and visitors in her home very difficult, she would bark and couldn’t settle. There’s also a young baby in the home and this has added to her anxiety. It’s been a fabulous experience to work with her guardians who have been very consistent in sticking to our plan. The pay off has been huge and yesterday Lucy came and settled next to me on the 🛋️ sofa.

I’ve worked with a lot of dogs (especially those with Doodle coats) who can’t tolerate being brushed. This little one has become very wary of the brush and all handling, so today we started from scratch which involved reading body language and going at the dog’s pace in order to help him feel safe. By the end of our session, we could gently brush around the head and we will next work on other areas.

Rudie was a lockdown dog and like many others I’ve met, she doesn’t feel safe when strangers enter her home. Her owners contacted me because they couldn’t have people over and three months ago, it would have been impossible for me to have entered their home without Rudie constantly barking. Her owners have completely committed to working with me to prevent Rudie reacting and here she is today, lying by my feet completely 😌relaxed. #

It’s been a whippet-tastic week and I love ❤️ working with whippets! Lots of owners struggling with their dogs’ 🐾 whose focus shifts away from them, in order to access chasing which is innately reinforcing (when that’s what you’re bred to do). We’re going to work on focus - in order to access chasing and recall - again, to access chasing.

Dorothy is a rescue from Romania. Her owners have carefully introduced her to her new surroundings and today we found a secure area and worked on her recall. She was absolutely amazing- even though she had to stop every so often to roll in a muddy puddle.🐾🐾💦💦🐕🐾

✈️🐾Four month old Ivy has just arrived in her forever home from Hungary. Adopting from abroad can bring its own set of challenges, but her owners are totally committed and prepared to go at Ivy’s pace. Today Ivy learnt the value of her name, along with the beginnings of a reliable recall. Here’s to new beginnings in a happy 🏡 home, one 🐾 paw at a time. 🐾

Jude doesn’t feel safe when people visit the family home, and he will bark to put distance between himself and what he perceives to be a threat. This makes life very difficult. It also makes training difficult for me because I can’t work with Jude in his home environment. We’ve discussed and planned how ‘strangers’ will be introduced back into the home and today we started part of this training by having Jude learn to settle and relax on a mat. We did this outside in the park so that Jude was relaxed and receptive to learning. Jude and his family are an awesome team who care passionately about their 🐶.

Bunty’s owners have chosen 1-2-1 dog training because it fits around their schedule. It also gives me the opportunity to individually tailor Bunty’s training. Yesterday’s training focused on recall and fun recall games so that Bunty doesn’t perceive coming back to her owners as the end of her fun!

Norbert has always been reactive at this busy road because he just can’t cope with the thundering noise and unpredictable movement. We have worked systematically with Norbert to introduce various pattern games to him, and today we used #123game to slowly introduce the road back to him. Norbert took it in his stride, taking in and processing the traffic, before taking a breath and return to his safe and reliable pattern game. Orca has struggled to walk on lead without lunging and barking at people who get too close. We’ve had the all clear from the vet which tells us this change in behaviour is not related to discomfort. We’ve focused our teaching on lead walking and focus Orca’s handler. Four weeks ago, Lumi (the black and white dog) came to live in her ‘forever’ home where there was already an existing dog. Initially, they couldn’t be in the same room together, but the dogs’ owners have taken their time with very slow introductions and keeping the dogs separate as they both acclimatised in their own ways to the new situation. I was over the moon 🌙 when I visited today; not only are they now completely relaxed in each other’s company, but they’re choosing to play together too. 🐾Walking on a loose lead 🦮is one of the exercises that both dogs and their humans tend to struggle with for various reasons, but it’s important to understand that we’re asking a dog to divide its attention between us and the environment….. and to walk in a straight line - which is a little odd for an animal who loves to follow scent. 🐾🐶❤️ A loose lead means less stress for both you and your dog, and we recommend a harness to reduce trapping the windpipe from a tight collar which will increase frustration. Building Trust and communication🤝🐕. A dog that walks calmly by your side is like walking with a friend. It’s a bond-strengthening exercise that’s rewarding for both of you. 💕 Safety First! 🛑🐾 A well-trained dog on a loose lead is easier to manage and less likely to get into trouble. Gaia was referred to me because she is reacting to dogs when she's on lead. This is what we've achieved in a very short space of time using kind, fair and effective methods.......

These two little ones have been rushing through the front door, which can make taking them out on the lead a bit of a nightmare. We've worked on teaching them to walk calmly on the lead, and today we focused on manners and calmness around the door. This is so that they can remain focused on their handler as they move out of the house.

There’s lots of different games we can play with our dogs that teach a fun focus. In this game, all the dog has to do is focus on the back of his handler’s hand, to make the ‘magic’ happen. Once he’s learnt the behaviour, we can put it on cue and use it in lots of different ways: We can use it for recall (dog returns to handler and positions himself under handler’s hand) or we could use it with lead walking (when walking past a distraction).

It’s not unusual for a puppy and their human to struggle with lead walking. After all, you have to juggle holding the lead, deliver treats and possibly hold a clicker too. When possible, I like to start teaching lead walking in a safe area without the lead and simply click and reward the dog for being at the owner’s side - and then add the lead. #dogonthehill #looseleadwalking #rewardbaseddogtraining #northlondondogtrainer

Nelly is brushing up on her lead walking skills because her owner is expecting a baby. We have taught this incrementally. First we practised having Nelly walking by her owner’s side in the house without the lead, then we practiced in the garden without the lead. Then we added the lead while in the garden and finally we proofed it on the street where there are more distractions. The final part will be to add the pushchair to the mix. Online training is a great way for puppies 🐶 to learn basic ‘Life Skills’ and it’s lovely to work with owners who started training with me online during the lockdown and are now advancing their skills in person with their teenage dogs. Here we are teaching a send-away where the dog learns to leave the owner, run around an object and then return.
