Emily and Bilbo were out first thing this morning as they get to know each other. Bilbo is newly on loan to Emily and is seemingly a very cool customer, he was marching happily along, taking all the sights and sounds of Welton in.

Velvet was very happy to be out today and nicely relaxed. We also both were admiring the Poppy display in Great Hatfield village!

This week was all about gaining Deeb’s attention without getting into a squabble.
She was a touch distracted and whereas, in the past, this might have bubbled over especially in the canter, she kept it together and allowed Charlie to give her instructions and help her relax into her rhythm work.

Zazu jumping out of canter for the first time.

15/06/2025

Ex racehorse Zazu has been learning to jump! He is quite long legged and lacks coordination which has made cantering in an arena, any degree of collection and jumping quite tricky for him.
His owner has built up his strength slowly as he was quite under condition when she got him having been turned away after racing but he has the most fantastic temperament, allowing us to cajole him into trying these things.
Canter is progressing now, along with the steering and he is finally getting the idea about jumping too (he would formerly just trot over the obstacles so we had to make them more ‘jump worthy’ and solid, which has helped).
This first video shows him feeling his way in still, with more confidence in trot and the next video shows him finally grasping that jumping out of canter is , in fact, much easier!

Looking for that longer, softer frame in the canter too with Sienna.

15/06/2025

Sienna is another of Lucy’s horses that has required a lot of patience as she’s gone through many phases of both physical and emotional development since I started her a couple of years ago.
There are several sides to Sienna and so we ride her as we find her each time and after being a bit ‘sticky’ initially, she soon tired of the TRT flexions and got to work.
Here I was helping with her lateral flexions through changing bend/direction on a serpentine whilst encouraging her to take the rein forward and down.

I really like these pictures of Lucy and Stormy.
Stormy is a Spanish Mustang and was schooled Western to a high standard in his previous home so he is excellent at direct transitions (ie. Halt to canter and back) and turning from the body/pirouttes, but was not so good at either hacking, where he lacked confidence, or opening up his stride.
We’ve worked a lot on the latter in his lessons and Lucy has worked a lot on the former at home and the benefits are now beginning to show.
It’s been a slow process as Stormy has had to build up his muscle mass, especially over his back, which is a hard task when only ridden by adults and is why we’ve been very careful not to hurry this.
His back is now lifting and he is looking great thanks to Lucy’s patience and commitment.

Out on little Jim yesterday to assess him after a couple of issues were creeping in for his owner. A few niggles and adjustments are needed but mainly Jim has been having his owner on a little. Much more forward rides required with more trotting to keep him interested and thinking forward.

Gitane out and about yesterday taking in all the local comings and goings.
