TEAM ANNIVERSARY 🎉🥳🙌🎊🐾🐕🐶

Skyla is celebrating TWO years with Team FMDW, well done Skyla, there were moments where we didn’t think we’d get to two months let alone two years!! 😂

Skyla started with FMDW when she was slap bang in the middle of those “Teenage” months! It was tricky, her little brain telling her that she’d actually forgotten all of her training, then suddenly remembering and then back to totally forgetting! BUT with the consistency and determination from her pawrents, along side Clicking With Canines and maybe a little help from their dog walker with regular weekly walks she made it through, a cracking little dog, fully off lead with epic recall enjoy her countryside adventures! 👏🏻

Everyone Meet Fin 💚

He’s joining us on some trial days this week to see if we are the right fit for each other, his first walk today and we’ve got off to a good start… he did roll is some filthy fox poo so I had to take him home only slightly embarrassed with our first outing 🤓😱 🦊 💩

WE ARE BACK 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇬🇧

We’ve had the most wonderful family holiday, Scotland is such a magical place, my parents are lucky to live here and it was lovely to see them! ⛰️ Although it seems the weather here in Yorkshire has been somewhat better than the highlands 😅 running a small business takes it toll and it’s so important to have breaks when you can to totally switch off, have time out and be with family, so I can always be the best I can be at work! 😎 I am now back raring to go and see my team again, hope they’ve all missed me! 🐶

Its looking hot at the start the week so please, as usual, expect me earlier. ☀️

Messages I’ve received through the week will be responded to tomorrow, the rest of my day and evening will be unpacking, washing and getting sorted for a busy week ahead! 📔

This week is the week of the Great Yorkshire Show, a wonderful show and one I really look forward to attending myself HOWEVER, it can, and has in previous years caused chaos with the traffic especially in the mornings while everyone is heading into the show. 🚗 🚦

I will be out earlier 🤞 I have both my little rat bags to drop off at school and the childminders so I will crack on with the day, I’d ideally leave later and let the traffic die down however Mr FMDW is working away so mum duties are also in full swing this week. 👊

Please don’t think im being rude if I don’t stop and chat as I collect and drop off dogs, I need to stick to my strict times this week, if you need to chat please give me a call at the end of the day. 📞 📱

Hopefully the week will go ahead with no hiccups, just be mindful all my morning dogs are located around the Show itself so timings maybe a little off but don’t worry your dogs will get walked 🐶 🚶 ✔️ 🤞

All in all here’s to a cracking week, let’s do this! 💪🏼

Good Morning ☀️

Everyone has had my holidays for the rest of the year, right up to January. 😱 (almost sounds like I have loads 😂 it’s about 8 working days off over the next 6 months just an FYI)

Our Summer holiday is booked! Below for July to keep as a reminder please make a note of it in your diary 📔

As always if you have any holidays you need to book off with me please try and do that sooner rather than later so I can organise my diary accordingly especially around the kiddie-winks! There’s a lot of logistics that going into organising a Dog walkers diary!!

RAIDEN 🐺

Our walk this morning was all about taking it slow, taking in our environment and all that it has to offer, Raiden LOVES to sniff so that is exactly what he did today, at his own pace and wherever his nose took him.

Sensory Stimulation 👃 Your dogs sense of smell is so much more sensitive than us humans, they gather all they need to know about their environment by sniffing, including other people, animals, food and potential dangers.

Mental Stimulation 🧠 (Now I know I rattle on about this ALL the time) Sniffing is so so important, it provides mental exercise and helps with any boredom and alleviates stress and anxiety which is crucial to their overall wellbeing. 🧘‍♀️

Sniffing is the most natural behaviour that fulfills a dogs natural instinct. Try it over the next few weeks with your own dogs, especially while the weathers too hot ☀️ for lots of running around, head out for a slower pace and let your dog enjoy everything their surroundings have to offer. 🐶 👃 🧠

WARM WEATHER DRILLS 💦

As the weather warms up I thought I’d remind everyone our warm weather policy! 🥵

Timings 🕰️ When a heatwave is upon us walks start earlier to avoid being out in the hottest part of the day. ☀️

Walk Duration 🚶‍♀️Sometimes, even when I’ve got up and out early, had my morning cuppa on route to collect dogs 🫖 walks need to be cut short, I’ll always keep an eye on the dogs throughout the walk and make a call wether to cut the walk shorter or not.

Transport 🚐 The van is fully air conditioned with a roof ventilation fan, cooling mats, and they always have fresh water.

Of course walking in the summer sounds idyllic but it can also be quite a stressful time for dog walkers, adjusting to the weather and making sure the safety and welfare of the dogs in my care is always top priority. 🥇

A little flexibility and understanding from clients during the hotter days is, as always, much appreciated, trust my judgement and allow me to make the decision day by day. ☀️ It might be that your neighbours dog walker is still coming in the middle of the day so why can’t I, the truth is this is my business and it’s my job to make the correct choice for my clients and their dogs. ☀️ 🐶 Heat stroke in dogs is very real.

Here’s to a lovely long warm summer, just nothing too unbearable please! 🤞

When you fit in a 1-1 at 8am before school even opens! 👌🏻 ☀️ 🐶 💪🏼

I was up and out at 6:30am doing some lovely cat visits 🐱 🐾 😺

Back home for breakfast and to get the boys ready as Mr FMDW was at work very early today. 💻

Then we had Agility with Rosie, her first lesson back since her little op and she was full of beans! 🐶 Fatty over here struggled to keep up!! 🏃‍♀️

Picked Both boys up, back home, cooked dinner, Mr FMDW arrived home and I was back out to see some more cats! 🐈 🐾 😺

It is safe to say this dog walker is now firmly positioned on the sofa with a proper brew with my feet up! 🛋️ 🫖 😴

Shall we do it all again tomorrow? That’s always going to be 100% yes! 🙌

On the 10th May HRH 👑 BRANDO Celebrated ONE whole year on Team FMDW 1️⃣🎊

That’s been a very fast year 👀 HRH slotted into the team PERFECTLY, it’s like he’s always been there, if you know you know. ✌️ Never puts a paw wrong… apart from a few days ago when he decided to roll in a dead rabbit and I had to send a message home to his parents 🤓

I often get asked if I take tennis balls or dog toys out on walks for the team. The answer is always NO and here’s why… 🎾 🛑 🐾🐶❌

🎾 Possessiveness, in a group environment you can be assured that at least 1️⃣ dog will likely guard the ball leading to tense moments and potential scuffles ❌

🎾 Over Excitement, this disrupts the calm of the walk and again may escalate into scuffles. The Increase running, chasing and possessiveness can create risks, such as dogs running into each other or becoming entangled in leads or each other.

🎾 Repetition, the dogs become obsessed by the ball fuelling the hyperactivity even long after the game ends and no one wants me dropping off a giddy kipper after a walk! Repeatedly throwing a ball puts so much pressure on their joints with the sudden stops and turns 🛑

As a dog walker I prioritise calm, stimulating walks with no ball throwing. While it may seem like I’m raining on the fetch parade, my focus is on ensuring the safety, happiness, and tiredness of the dogs on my team. By immersing them in their natural surroundings, without the distraction of toys, they can truly enjoy the countryside with their pals, enjoying every moment ✅👏🏻🐾

Yesterday this little legend turned 13 years old.

Our longest serving team member who not long ago celebrated his 10 year team anniversary. 👏🏻

He still walks with us every single day and has showed zero signs of slowing down or giving up on the Friday banter he likes to throw my way now and then. 😂

If you have followed me for a while you’ll know by now that I wasn’t always the team coach for FMDW, September 2021 was when I took over the leads! 🐕‍🦺

This time 3 years ago I was in the middle of probably the longest handover known to man! (Roughly 4 months) It was time to get down to business, I was out as much as possible shadowing Jo, learning all there was to know about life as a Dog Walker, the dogs, their personalities and of course the quiet walks. 🥵 🚶‍♀️ 🤩 🤓

I was very fortunate that most of the FMDW clients wanted to stay on, trusted me to continue to look after their precious pooches once the leads had officially been handed over and we waved goodbye to Jo 👋🏻

I spent evenings and weekends going to meet every single client, building rapport with them, and answering any questions they may have had. 🤓🤓🤓

Spare time was spent educating myself as much as possible, ensuring I could be as knowledgeable as possible surrounding all things dogs! Online courses, including Canine Behaviour & Body Language and Canine First Aid Training (online & classroom based) 📚 🖥️ By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail 😜 😉 👏🏻 So I wanted to make sure I was as prepared as possible!!!

To gain extra knowledge & experience on top of the studies I was already doing I started to shadow Kate Clicking With Canines As a dog Walker I only ever use positive reinforcement handling techniques and myself and Kate are aligned in our techniques as she is a positive reinforcement trainer and behaviourist with a MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour. 🤓✅

Today marks 13 years since FMDW opened its van doors for the first time. It’s a HUGE achievement for me to be able to continue to take this business forward, offering the same consistent, reliable & committed services to the dogs of Knaresborough! 🎁 🐶 🍾 🥂 1️⃣3️⃣

Does anyone fancy an all expenses paid trip to Disneyworld ??? (insert your favourite place in the whole wide world if Disney isn't your thing).

There are a few rules though!
🐾 - You aren't allowed to go on any of the rides.
🐾 - You can't eat any of the amazing food.
🐾 - You aren't allowed to talk to anyone.
🐾 - You have to stay right by my side the entire time, in fact you can hold my hand the entire time.

Bit of a random post for a Friday morning Kate !!

Not really, if instead of Disneyworld we think of it in terms of our dogs walk. I saw a client the other day who had been told that their dog should be:

🐾 - Walked on a really short lead so they couldn't move away from their owner.
🐾 - Was not allowed to sniff anything, and must be pulled away from any sniffs.
🐾 - Must walk to heel for the entire walk.

Doesn't sound like great fun for the dog !!

Amos and I went out for a bimble this morning, at the top of the road he decided he wanted to turn right, instead of the usual left, I know there is nothing in that direction, but assumed an interesting sniff had wafted down and caught his attention so we went that way, he had the full length of his 2m lead so he could mooch along and head over to the hedge if he wanted, without either of us feeling tension on the lead. He had a good old sniff, and found something interesting to have a roll in then we turned round and came home, happy dog and I got a few steps in (not as many as usual but I'll catch up later :0).

Gone are the days where we believed a dogs walk had to be 'x' miles at 'y' pace, we now know that our dogs benefit from as much mental stimulation as they do physical exercise (Amos rounded off this mornings activities with a good old snuffle hunt in the garden). So next time you take you dog out, remember, it's their walk (or it should be), let them sniff if they want to, give them a nice long lead to mooch around the end of (so long as it's safe of course), and if you can, let them dictate the route you take.
