Scammers

Sadly Facebook is overrun with scammers. They regularly post in groups and on pages, trying to get you to message them privately or join their scam group. The two in this photo are among several that have posted on our page recently.

Scammers are fairly easy to identify just from their profile. Without describing the telltale signs, there are always things that make them stand out as not being quite true.

The two below are advertising scammer groups. The majority of the members will be scammers as well. They will be able to deliver a ferret to anywhere in the world. The information they give you will be fake. This includes using stolen photos and often stolen words. The so called delighted new owners are also scammers, trying to convince you that the seller is genuine. However there is no ferret - they just want to steal money from you.

As the selling of animals is prohibited on Facebook they will message people direct about ferrets they have available. They will advertise groups using the words adoption and rehoming. Groups that they have set up may have similar names to other genuine groups.

Please be alert. The scammers will try to convince you that they are genuine but if something does not feel right then walk away. Do not fall for their sob story, give in to pressure to give them money in advance, or join their groups.

Found Ferrets

When ferret is found, most ferret rescues will not post a photo of it. There is a reason for this.

On posting a found ferret photo, there are always several people claiming ownership. Amongst them may be the actual owner, some hopeful it is theirs and some just after a free ferret. Those hoping for a free ferret will not care that the actual owner may be looking for their missing pet. How would you determine the rightful owner?

The easiest way of tracking any pet owner down is via a microchip. Unfortunately microchipping is not yet common amongst ferret owners, particularly those with indoor ferrets.

With no microchip you are relying on being able to identify the correct ferret / owner. Some ferrets have distinguishing features, like three legs. Others may have specific colour patterns but with two coat changes a year, it is surprising how much a ferret can alter. For those with multiple ferrets, you can usually tell them apart but for some it can be the little things such as a slight difference in weight. Would you know your ferret if it was mixed with a group of the same colour ferrets?

As ferrets are excellent escape artists it is vital that owners microchip them. It is inexpensive and lessens the heartache of possibly not getting your ferret back should it escape. Any ferret, regardless of where they are kept or the experience of their owner, could escape. If not already done, please consider getting your ferrets microchipped,
