The neutering deadline for exempted XL bullies who were one or older on 31st January 2024 is fast approaching. ⚠️

If your XL bully has not been neutered by the deadline and confirmation isn’t received by Defra, your dog will no longer be exempt and could be seized by the police. 😢

You only have a few weeks left, so we strongly advise you not to delay, as it could pose a significant risk.

BRAIN UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

The challenges of teenage dogs

The saying - "Parents with teenagers understand why some animals eat their young" is something that many parents of teenagers will relate to.

Many people are unaware that dogs also go through a teenage stage and are frustrated and unprepared for the changes it may bring.
Statistics show that many dogs are surrendered or re homed during this phase as their owners no longer “like” the way their dogs behave, can’t handle them and just give up on them.

The teenage brain is going through many changes. Think of it as being “rewired”. The rewiring process can cause some parts not to work at all, work sporadically or have too much current. The re wiring process often causes new, out of character or unexpected behaviour.

There are many similarities to the changing human teenage brain. There’s a valid scientific reason why car insurance premiums for young adults under 25 are more expensive. The brain is not fully matured – irrational decisions, risk taking, poor choices and accidents are more likely to happen.

Be patient, understanding and most of all consistent with your teenage dog.

Don’t give up on them. They are feeling just as frustrated as we are.

Being aware of what is happening in their brain as it develops to full maturity helps us to be more accepting.

Remember that this is just a phase and it will get better.

This week we have been talking to lots of clients about the campaign, to raise awareness of any dog who might need extra space when other dogs and people meet them…
Gorgeous three month old Bluebell has a yellow lead to encourage people not to approach and distract her whilst her owners are working on her initial puppy training and socialisation skills.
Winnie, the Labrador, finds meeting other dogs a bit challenging, so her owners use a yellow tag on her lead to alert other owners that it’s really helpful if they can re-call even the most friendly of dogs away from her before the dog has the opportunity to approach her. This helps Winnie to meet other dogs at a comfortable distance for her, which will help to build her confidence more and more as time goes on.
If you have any questions about the Dogs in Yellow campaign, feel free to come in and chat to one of the team!

When dogs are happy, their owners are too! 🐾

Let's remember that respecting a dog's need for space is essential for their well-being and ours.

Aggression in dogs is not a breed specific behaviour. Any dog can bite under the right (or wrong) circumstances.

The vast majority of the time, dogs bite because they don't feel they have a choice - as a defensive behaviour rather than an aggressive one. They are trying to protect themselves.

A big reason for them wanting to protect themselves is pain.
If a dog is in pain and has tried to communicate that they want to be left alone, and those signals have been ignored, the dog has no choice but to escalate it's behaviour to be heard.

This is an especially dangerous situation for children, who can be quite tactile with their affections.

Learning the signs and signals your dog might use to communicate that they are in pain is one of the best ways to avoid any pain related aggressive behaviour.

Our book called "Why Don't You Listen" aims to do just that, to help you grow your knowledge about the signs of pain. The book is aimed at children, but is a great learning tool for adults as well.

You know what it really takes to be sure that dogs feel safe and secure? It takes a relationship with a partner who is sure that they are safe and secure. Time and again I am working with people who were sure that their responses exhibited security. The work we do at Dogtaggs gently but accurately reveals a truthful position. Procedures here reveal with great clarity where the lines exist. It's often not what people thought. Luckily, the Dogtaggs programmes also support human development and change which results in space for dogs to blossom.

If you're struggling with how expressive your dog is, sign up to Get Cracking with Tracking and we'll get you on a vehicle that will not only help you see, really see who's doing what, but will also provide you with tools to stabilise yourself while your dog shines. All of which takes place in an invested small group to support you. www.dogtaggs.co.uk

Very interesting study.

"Preliminary study comparing dogs’ responses to travel in electric cars" by
Claire Ricci-Bonot, Ana Maria Barcelos, Ellenor Davies, Kitty Phillips, Joseph Pinto Arackal, Honour Smith, Adele Spain, Daniel S. Mills

A new article published at Pet Behaviour Science https://journals.uco.es/pet/article/view/16735

How well do dogs react to electric cars? Transporting pet dogs, especially in cars, can cause stress and trigger various reactions. While electric vehicles (EVs) are known for their quieter operation compared to internal combustion engine vehicles, little research has investigated their impact on dogs. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct a preliminary investigation using a mixed methods approach to identify potential issues that warrant further investigation by comparing the behavioural and physiological responses of dogs travelling in both types of vehicles.

Twenty dogs underwent a standardised ~10 minute ride twice, once in each vehicle. As a pilot study, qualitative assessments of outcomes and effect sizes were prioritised, with references to statistical significance provided where observed.

The dogs' behaviour appeared to be influenced by the type of vehicle in which they were travelling, with dogs showing signs of increased restlessness in the diesel vehicle compared to the electric vehicle. This was indicated by shorter periods of lying down in a relaxed and alert state. In a clinical assessment of individual dogs, two dogs showing signs of nausea appeared to show potential improvements associated with travelling in the electric vehicle.

These preliminary findings suggest that the type of vehicle may influence the behaviour and well-being of dogs during the journey. Further research with larger sample sizes and controlled conditions is warranted to better understand the effects of vehicle type on dog passengers and to explore potential interventions to mitigate travel-related stress in dogs.

BREAKING NEWS
A new study exploring the potential impact of powerful insecticides used in some popular flea treatments for dogs has provided the first evidence for potential harm to New Forest waterbodies and their aquatic fauna.

To read the full story follow this link:
https://www.newforestdog.org.uk/article/285/some-flea-treatments-harm-new-forest-water-wild-life

How YOU can help
1: Use alternative flea treatments such as oral chewable tablets
2: If using spot-on flea treatments, as a minimum please keep dogs out of water for three or four days after treatment.
3: If your dog likes the water, use moving water like streams rather than still ponds.
4: Consider where you walk to avoid non flowing water

Do feel free to share this post or tag a dog owning friend so we can spread the message far and wide.

We've just arrived home from doing some re-socialisation work with a little dog. Moss worked with the dog so well especially as we were in an outhouse with rabbits on view. He waited until he got home for his rabbit fix! 😂😂
