During November 2023 a National Antibiotic Amnesty is being held by vets, doctors
and pharmacists. Our practice is taking part in the antibiotic amnesty and we are
encouraging clients to return any unused or out of date antibiotics to us for safe
disposal.
We are only able to accept your pets unused medication but your local Pharmacy or Doctors Surgery will be able to take any human ones :)

Everyone meet Harry the Storm Petrel…
Poor little Harry didn’t fair too well in storm Ciaran last week and ended up being found in our Vet Molly’s garden, where her two dogs Fern and Moss took an interest. He was cold and floppy. Molly kept Harry safe, warmed him up and brought him into us at the hospital. We continued to keep him warm, gave him medications as required and crop tube fed him (this is essential in providing poorly birds with supportive care, allowing him to get the nutrition he needs). We also took an x-ray to ensure he didn’t have any fractures or injuries and he was all clear! Once he began feeling better he thoroughly enjoyed a couple of ‘fishy baths’.
Storm Petrels are small seabirds and are classified as Amber under the Birds Conservation Concern 5: the red list for birds. It was therefore very important that we got him back to his healthy self and back to the sea as soon as possible. These little birds spend most of their time out at sea and only come into land for breeding purposes, where they nest among rocks or burrows offshore. We also discovered that they are unable to walk on land and they therefore have to shuffle.
Here is a little video we have put together of Harry and him enjoying his freedom after being released back to the sea by one of our night Nurses, Charlotte. Not a storm in sight. Wishing Harry the best of luck and we hope he can find his way back to his family!🐦🫶🏼

Head Nurse Vacancy
Here at Penmellyn Vets, we are looking for an experienced, confident RVN to join our team as our Head Nurse.
This is a great opportunity for an existing Head Nurse, Deputy Head Nurse or an RVN looking to step up.
What do we look for in a Head Nurse?
We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic nurse who will work with the management team to facilitate the smooth running and the continuing development of Penmellyn Vets. We are a training practice and would expect our Head Nurse to be involved with student training and development.
This is predominantly a clinical role but with a significant management component. No two days are the same at our practice but the duties for this role would include -
Managing the Nursing team
General day-to-day nurse duties
Assisting with managing stock levels
Liaising and working closely with the Clinical Directors and Practice Manager
Attending monthly Practice Management meetings
Organising training
Nurse performance appraisals
Organising and attending meetings
Clinical coaching
Organising equipment servicing and maintenance
Completing rotas and arranging short notice cover as needed
Supporting the Practice in maintaining its Practice Standards accreditation
We encourage progression, development and welcome new ideas and ways of working. You will have plenty of support to allow you to thrive in this role, working in clinical areas and having designated time for administrative work associated with managing the nurse team.
We are flexible with the hours worked but this is a full-time position. Our present Head Nurse works 37.5 hours over a four-day week and works one Saturday daytime shift every four weeks.

Please share with your friends and family 🎅🏼
