And this applies to all gundogs and most working breed pet dogs :)

This gorgeous boy is Barney, the young springer spaniel.
Barney has a powerful nose and an even more powerful desire to use it.
Once the sniffs kick in, the ears seem to switch off and it's really hardb for house humans to get his attention.
Learning to hunt together and to switch between hunting and not hunting will help Barney express his innate spaniel talents while also staying connected and safe.
Barney gets very excited when he has a "precious" item in his mouth. He can become agitated, tense and grumbly when he thinks someone walking past or even getting up from a sofa might want to take his treasure. This type of behaviour is often called resource guarding.
We're working on a retrieve to hand, which will help change his mind about interacting with items and his lovely humans.
Retrieving will also make walks and hunting together more interesting and mentally fulfilling.
Do you have a spaniel? Have you experienced similar issues? I want to know! Tell me in the comments :)

Conversations with Hugo about walking nicely (on and off lead).

Hugo is at a stage in his training programme where we switch from food rewards to "functional" rewards, the things he wants that are not in my pocket or hand.
These are often the very things that cause dogs to pull on the lead.
Here, you can see how he starts to realise that he running and barking can be earned.
You may also notice that he will interrupt his own running and barking to see if maybe he can earn it again.
I think he loves the build up, the tension and the release cue even more than the activity of running and barking itself. This is a common phenomenon that we can utilise in training.
Was this video helpful? let me know :)

Hugo's intensive programme: some of the foundations:
1) retrieve
2) stop
3) hunt here
4) heel
We're also developing his self-regulating (emotionally) skills, doing more scent games, practise settling down on cue and working around livestock, dogs and new people.
