We had a brilliant day at the Cornwall Veterinary Association annual CPD event on Saturday - it was great to catch up with old friends and hear how our referral cardiology and telemedicine service is helping patients in different ways throughout the region.

Thank you to my wonderful Heartvets colleagues Tiago Bispo and Helen Brewster for helping out and doing a great job of lecturing! And it still makes me smile to have my trusty Holter monitoring models in the back of the car ready for the next adventure 🤣

💉 ANAESTHETISING CARDIAC PATIENTS 💉

Cardiac patients requiring sedation or anaesthesia can present a tricky conundrum:
- How safe are they to anaesthetise?
- What are the risks?
- What should be considered?
- What drugs should be avoided?

Every patient should be assessed on an individual case basis, but these our some of our tips and recommendations to approaching anaesthesia.

🤔 WHAT IS A HOLTER? 🤔

Heard the term 'Holter' and wondered what it's all about?
Let us fill you in!

They are named after Norman Holter - a professor and senior physicist who first invented the technology in America in the 1940s.

Used today in human and veterinary medicine to record the waveform of heart beats throughout daily life, to look for any abnormalities that contribute to cardiac disease and its clinical signs.

Heart Vets runs its own international Holter service from our diagnostics team - check out the website for more information on ordering a monitor for your patients!

❤️ Heart Vets Hero(es) - Max and Poppy ❤️

Max (left) has been seeing Anna, Fi and Julia since 2022 for rechecks of his degenerative mitral valve disease (whilst enjoying plenty of cuddles in the process!)

His adopted sister Poppy (right) later developed a heart murmur too, and came in to see us with Max for moral support. We diagnosed Poppy with degenerative mitral valve disease too! She will remain under the watchful eye of our team to make sure that both herself and Max are regularly assessed for any structural cardiac changes, which may require adjustments to their treatment plans.

Don't they make a beautiful pair? 😍

🫁 PULMONARY HYPERTENSION 🫁

Often overlooked and commonly asked about!

The most common cause of PHT is secondary to congestive heart failure (Class II on the ACVIM guidelines). It is important to understand the underlying mechanisms in order to treat this most effectively - successful management can make a huge difference to patient quality of life, but treating it inappropriately can spell disaster.

This video looks at the cardiac perspective, be aware of combinations of disease processes when considering the overall case.

🩻 DIAGNOSTIC TESTS 🩻

Here are some of the most common tests which can be performed when our patients come to see us.

Each test allows us to piece together the puzzle to get the most useful information to make a diagnosis and optimise the treatment plan. 🧩

Not every patient gets every test! We prioritise those which will change what we do - we do not perform tests which are not necessary. All the options are discussed in the consultation in order to make the best plan for patients and their owners.
