I bought myself a thing!

I’ve always wanted to explore the idea of photography, but I’ve had a really strong urge to learn about it over the last year or so. It’s not a cheap hobby to start (and the thousands of options are so, unbelievably complicated to research 😂) so I’ve held off but after some advice from people who actually know what they’re doing, I decided to go for it 😃

I have lots to practice and get used to but my plan is to bring this into my work with horses too. Watch this space… 🤩 📸

Dinner in a shady spot.
Current temp according to my car 34° 😎

How does your horse cope in the heat? Do you change anything about their routine to help?

Ginger actually loves this weather, he is just as sprightly as usual, and will bask in the sun when others stand under the trees. He doesn’t even feel hot to touch.
He suffers more in the cold and wet, having even been known to colic in double figure temps because he’s cold!

He’s always been this way and I’ve always put it down to him being born in a hot country and being a thoroughbred, but the recent cushings diagnosis (and my suspicion that he’s had it underlying for a long time) makes me wonder if it’s linked. Their temperature regulation can be a bit iffy and I’d definitely say his is! Usually it goes the other way though… holding onto their coat and getting too hot… Ginger doesn’t grow a coat and he’s never hot, he does like to do things differently though… 😂

In the office today working on the Confidence in the Saddle online course, grateful to live in such a quiet spot so I can have the window open while filming on such a hot day! 🌞

And…. I have just filmed the last video! 📹

Now for a mountain of editing, recording audio downloads and creating worksheets. 📝

My hope is to release it at the end of August. Watch this space..

A lovely start to the day with new clients Martha and Oakley. They are a new partnership and have been having some communication issues, largely down to Oakley’s lack of awareness for Martha’s space and his history as a riding school pony making him very desensitised to just about everything!

So today was about starting to bring some responsiveness back and helping Martha to find her leadership with him. She did so well and I was very impressed with her timing especially. Looking forward to seeing what they achieve in the future together 😍

There was a big improvement in Rini’s mindset with the groundwork today, much more connected and able to move freely forward without getting stuck, so we decided to take her out up the track to continue the conversation. She did have a few concerns but again huge improvements in her ability to see Michelle as someone who can help her in those moments 😃

The winner of last week’s poll, what’s the most common horse breed owned by my followers, was the cob! Closely followed by the thoroughbred.

So in celebration of them both, please pop a photo of yours in the comments!

Here’s one of mine - a very young Ginger who is full thoroughbred, and our lovely cob Holly who is sadly no longer with us. My very own Ginger and Black Beauty 🧡🖤

4 months difference between photos.

Spice is a great example of the benefits of regular gentle bodywork, making small changes that he is able to maintain.

Big changes we have noticed include:

- His overall posture, much less ‘camped under’

- Lengthened through his back

- Now able to rest both hind legs (previously couldn’t do either)

- Stronger through his thoracic sling, making his neck look longer and his shoulder less bulky

- Less prominent ‘point’ at his sacrum

Spice has been having monthly bodywork sessions with me since March. Not only have we been working on his body but also his mind, he is far more relaxed than he was and really enjoys his sessions 😀

Message me if you’d like to book your horse in and take advantage of my 6 sessions for the price of 5 offer!

Lovely Rini has the tendency to get the equine equivalent of ‘brain fog’ especially when learning something new, so today we worked on a simple pattern to help her collect her thoughts a bit and find her ability to connect to Michelle. She did so well and there were some lovely changes coming, which will get better and better as Michelle works on it 😀

🥾Comfy walking boot recommendations needed!

I think it’s time I replaced my summer work boots 😂

These ones have been amazing and I’ve held on as long as I can but now my feet are quite literally falling through the bottom of them. Annoyingly they seem to be discontinued, so please let me know if you have any you would recommend…

Lisa and I had plans this evening for the horses which had to be postponed due to the heat, so instead we gave the orange boys cold showers and some bromance time together, then sat in the shelter with a takeaway… there are definitely worse ways to spend a Tuesday evening! 😊

How to keep your equine bodyworker happy.
(Bodyworkers and horse owners, please do share!)

1. Be ready for us. If we turn up and you’ve still got to bring the horse in, feed them, pick their feet out etc, it delays the session and that can push our whole day back

2. If we’re working in the stable, please muck it out first. There’s nothing worse than having to hold a horse’s foot after they’ve just stepped in a fresh poo, or the smell of urine on our boots when we get back into the car!

3. Be around, ask questions, hold the horse if we need assistance but resist the urge to poke and prod them, pull bits out of their forelock, rub and scratch them. It’s important for us to see the horse’s response to what we’re doing, and that requires them to be focused on us.

4. Be honest. If your horse kicks when you touch their hind legs, tell us before we go there. If they aren’t great for picking their feet up, let us know. We may be able to adjust the session to suit the horse but that does bring me to the next point…

5. We aren’t there to train your horse. I do offer training as well, and if your horse is being tricky to handle we may have to abandon ship and switch to a training session, unless of course it’s a physical reason for the behaviour. Many bodyworkers don’t offer training so please don’t expect them to just deal with it (same goes for vets, farriers etc..)

6. Have your horse relatively clean. They don’t need to be ready for HOYS, but a wet or muddy coat is really hard to work on and doesn’t feel good for us or the horse. The same applies to feet, please pick them out and clean off the worst of the mud around them if possible

7. But, don’t go overboard on the grooming with coat shine/oil. A slick and slippery horse is just as hard to work on as a wet and muddy one!

8. Plan some time off around the session. If you’re just getting off after a zoom round the fields when we arrive, the horse’s body is not in its best state for bodywork. Similarly, if you’re off competing the next day, it might be best to reschedule, as more often than not we will recommend a day or two off

9. Don’t book your session at the busiest time of day. If horses are being brought in, turned out, fed, and your horse is being asked to stand quietly out of their routine, that can make our job very difficult. Of course some horses don’t mind but if yours does, plan wisely

10. Do your homework. If we give you something to work on, it will only work if you do it!

If you do all of these you are on track to becoming your bodyworker’s favourite client 😉

Bodyworkers please feel free to add more in the comments….

A hint towards just how much information is going into the Confidence in the Saddle online course. Each point is it’s own individual video, plus there are audio downloads and printable worksheets. I tend to add something to this list most days 😂

I’ve blurred it as I want to keep the content as a surprise (and things may still change!).

I’m SO excited to release this course!
