Working Cocker Spaniels - For the field and at home.

Calling all owners with puppies under 6 months!
I’ve noticed that a lot of people are worried about letting their dogs off the lead or longline when they’re young because they’re worried about the pups running off and getting lost.
This is exactly the age when you should be confidently letting your dogs off the lead!
Up to 6 months puppies are very dependent on you and will naturally want to stay close by. This is the time when you can build up your off lead bond with your dog, have lots of fun training doing little puppy retrieves or hunting, fun obedience using games and toys, really get all those basics in!
Reliance on longlines without working on your bond with the dog could lead to the result you really didn’t want! Dogs might be good as gold whilst on the longline then tear off into the distance the minute you take it off!
Once you hit the independent teenage phase you will need to work even harder if that initial outdoor bond isn’t there.
Here’s something to try to see where you are with your outside bond. Take your dog to a field, just sit down on the grass and take your puppy off the lead. What does he do? Give it a go! You might be surprised ….
Please ensure you are in a safe environment before you remove the lead.

A short article about grooming.
This is copied from the Facebook group Working Cockers for the field and at home.

Cockers not only come in all shapes and sizes but their coats can vary greatly too! Some are very fine coated with little feathering whilst others have quite thick, long and shaggy coats!
Things that can affect the quality and appearance of your dog’s coat:
Age
Neutering
Clipping
The above very much depends on the type of coat your dog has. Some will be affected by any or all of the above, some won’t.
A dog’s coat can be fluffy/coarse as a result of hormones …
As a puppy
As an older dog who’s hormones have dropped
A dog that has been neutered
A dog’s coat can be more coarse/fluffy/patchy as a result of repeated clipping and the colour can be affected too. A shiny red coat can become much lighter and more mat in appearance, a liver coat can become almost silver in places.
Although cockers aren’t officially double coated they often have the equivalent of a “guard” top coat that keeps them weather proof. Clipping can disrupt this, mainly the ability for the dog to shake and dry itself when wet.
When you take your dog to the groomer for the first time make sure you let them know what you’d like! Some of them will clip as standard. Hand stripping is a time consuming business so not always offered. It’s also not always possible to hand strip a neutered or elderly dog so do take the time to discuss this with your groomer!
Apart from this all that’s required is daily brushing with a slicker brush, metal comb for ears and feathering, and to rinse off any mud with warm water. Shampoo is not really needed except a few times a year on greasy ears and muzzles.
Finally at this time of year, do check daily for thorns and grass seeds which can very quickly become embedded in your dog’s skin particularly feet and armpits and lead to abscesses (not sure how dogs can have armpits without arms, but you know what I mean 😂)

I took these pics this morning of this little Cocker boy, for a lady who was interested - but she wants a solid red pup.
He is orange & white, with a very roan coat that is getting darker daily, so if anyone loves a ginger .............. email me.
His dad is Mr Pickles, so he will be a very handsome, laid-back boy when he grows up.

You can see him on the we**am on Sunday morning - email [email protected] if you would like login details

Today is a puppy worming day!
This litter are 3 weeks old and having their first worming.
Getting weighed to make sure they get the correct dosage.
This little chap was quite sleepy, so not too much wriggling on the scales.
All puppies are wormed x 3 and flea treated before they go off to new homes at 8 weeks +
Email me on [email protected] for info about any of our puppies.
