All animals may suffer from back, neck, pelvic and musculoskeletal problems at some time during their life. And like us, they may benefit from McTimoney treatment. The McTimoney chiropractic technique, an ethical and respectful way in which to work with another species; most animals will accept it quite readily and many seem to really enjoy it. Whatever the age of your animal, whatever your chosen

life style, activity or sport with your animal, you can improve the comfort, well being, general health, quality of life, and even performance of your animal with the aid of McTimoney treatment. McTimoney treatment will align and balance the animal's musculoskeletal system, so optimizing the individual's dynamic flexibility and helping the nervous system to function at its highest level. By adjusting those misaligned joints throughout the whole body whilst paying special attention to the spine and pelvis, health, soundness and performance may be restored and maintained. Legally McTimoney Practitioners may only work with the permission of the individual’s veterinary surgeon; the reality is that often the veterinary surgeon may suggest McTimoney treatment as part of the remedy and in practical terms this may mean working in collaboration with the veterinary team.

Smiley Sabre 😍
A comment that I often hear is ‘my dog would never tolerate being treated’

By listening to the dog, observing body language and respecting their boundaries it makes treating most dogs possible.

What this looks like is giving the dog frequent breaks, shorter sessions, using food rewards and working with a qualified trainer or behaviourist.

Often the reason behind a dog being reluctant to be touched is pain!

As a professional finding another professional in their area of expertise can be difficult due to 'I know my dogs foibles and you HAVE to understand and acknowledge them for me to trust you with him'

OTT?
No

Here is Sabre assuming the position ready for his session with Claire Lawrence Mctimoney Animal Therapist

Consent from him is paramount.

A lovely relationship has developed over the last couple of years 🩵🩷

🐶 Maximising careers and success in sporting dogs! 🐶

Following feedback from last years seminar, were bringing it back this year!

Ideal for those wanting to learn more about how to prevent injury in their agility, hoopers, flyball dogs etc! 💪

Both Claire and myself are masters degree qualified, members of RAMP, with plenty of agility experience with our own dogs! 🎓

The seminar involves a roughly 2–3-hour presentation, followed by a hands-on exercise demo with you and your dogs.

We do however ask that dogs are kept in cars throughout the presentation. There will be a break to visit/let dogs out for a wee.

Save the date: October 26th 10am – 3pm @ Deopham hall

This dog came to me for a musculoskeletal assessment as part of her training program, she certainly didn’t initially appear to be in pain, she is very active and well muscled.

On closer examination she tended to ‘hover’ rather than sit and the physical examination revealed painful hips.

Our dogs are so good at hiding pain and carrying on. Any behavioural changes should always be investigated for pain as it’s such a common finding.

💊💊PAIN💊💊

This is why we do what we do and this is why you need to be careful with those who don’t!!!

This little dog was recently rehomed and the behaviour she presented was that
🐕‍🦺 she couldn’t settle
🐕‍🦺Kept her owners up at night
🐕‍🦺She was anxious and obsessive.

Her pain assessment found hip pain so her owner got her x-rayed and this is the result.

Now what does pain look like? I have had owners say ‘I know my dogs not in pain’ and this dog COULD have been an example of this.
This dog loves to
🐶Play
🐶Run
🐶Jump
🐶Go for walks

Pain (just like for us!) isn’t always about yelping and limping, until it gets unbearable. Pain presents in posture and behaviour.

Now there’s another tangent I want to add to this. I want one of your take homes from this to be where it is you go to for advice on your dogs behaviour. I want you to think about the countless dogs in social media clips who are reactive and being yanked about, have aversive equipment used on them and where there is no mention of pain assessments. I want you to think about the people who try to offer you advice and their go to is to punish.

Stop. Listen to your dog. Be curious as to why your dog may be behaving a certain way. Stay away from any dusty old 💨’s who’s curiosity died years ago and are trying to destroy yours.

Monthly check-in with Claire Lawrence Mctimoney Animal Therapist today, which Holly always loves going to, not just because she gets squeezy cheese! Aunty Claire is very happy with how Holly is doing. We also had an annual check-in at Debenham Vets yesterday to see how her hip dysplasia and cataract are doing. Both are very, very mild but obviously we like to keep these things monitored closely, particularly as she only has the one eye! The great news is that neither have really changed since the last check and they are very happy to wait another year to check them again!

Jasper and Olive are regular clients of mine, I have been working with their owner to improve Jasper and Olive’s strength and flexibility now that they are a little bit older to ensure they can continue to enjoy agility.
Jasper and Olive had a great weekend and won their respective agility leagues as well as the finals on the day…also proving that Cavaliers can turn their paw to anything!

At Smart Dog Training we know that reactive dogs aren’t bad dogs, they aren’t spoilt dogs. They are dogs worthy of love and very worthy of help!

Reactivity is an emotional issue, comprised of many pieces sometimes. It’s not a training issue.

So what do we provide for reactive dogs?

🐕‍🦺Before any behaviour modification dogs are required to have a pain assessment from Claire Lawrence McTimoney Therapist.

🐕‍🦺Next we do a 5 session package where we start off on a controlled environment and then move to other environments.

🐕‍🦺We introduce lifestyle changes, enrichment and fun!

If your dog needs further support we then have small skills classes for you dog to join!

Looking forward to putting this into practice 😊

Looking forward to working with Marta's Dog Behaviour 😁

I am happy to say that I have teamed up with Claire Lawrence Mctimoney Animal Therapist and all of my behaviour packages now include a thorough pain assessment!

🐾What is McTimoney therapy?
McTimoney is a form of chiropractic manipulation used to treat pain and dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system. The technique is non-invasive and gentle and is readily accepted by animals. The treatment aims to resolve dysfunction and balance the animal’s musculoskeletal system, it is great for pain detection.

🐾Why does my dog need a pain assessment?
Pain has a massive impact on behavior, some studies suggest that almost 80% of dogs that are displaying unwanted behaviours are in some form of physical discomfort (1). Sometimes the relationship between pain and behaviour can be complex but there is always a logical explanation for why a dog is showing these behaviours. Think about the last time you had a banging headache, you were probably more likely to be sensitive to certain sounds? What about if you had an arthritic elbow and someone walked past you, accidentally knocking your elbow causing a flare up in your arthritis, do you think you would feel comfortable in crowded areas? Probably not!
If your dog is in pain, a behaviour modification plan is simply not enough.

🐾But my dog has recently been given the all clear by the vet, do they stil need a pain asessment?
Yes! Vets are great but very busy people, there is only so much they can do in a 15 or 20 minute consultation. Dogs are very good at hiding pain, especially in a veterinary environment where they are likely to have increased levels of cortisol and adrenaline (natural pain relief) due to their fight or flight response. During your appointment with Claire, you will have more time to chat and your dog will have more time to relax, making pain detection a lot easier.

🐾What if I find out my dog is not in pain after the assessment?
That's great! It means that we can fully focus on the behaviour modification plan knowing that your dog is fully comfortable.

April is a sound sensitive dog who finds the world very over whelming and isn’t trusting of strangers.

Sounds sensitivity can indicate musculoskeletal pain so first stop was with Claire Lawrence McTimoney Therapist. It’s taken a few sessions for April to feel comfortable and yesterday we had a massive breakthrough where she asked Claire for attention!

She is coming on in leaps and bounds and it’s taken very dedicated owners, Claire, myself and a very helpful vet!

Chester the Sprockador came to see me before starting his training with Smart Dog Training. Chester had suddenly become reactive towards other dogs which was out of character.
Chester was found to have pain in his hip and knee which has been successfully treated and he is already happier about meeting other dogs.

The very handsome Diesel 🥰 Behavioural changes in dogs can be one of the first signs that they have pain. Unlike us, dogs often don’t show obvious signs of pain, however in the time that I have been offering musculoskeletal assessments prior to behavioural training 80% of dogs seen have been found to be in pain!

The wonderful Reggie 💕

Meet Reggie, a wobbly dog who's not giving up...

Reggie is a 6-year-old Doberman who developed a swaying gait and lost his enthusiasm for agility. After an MRI revealed he had a neural disease called 'wobblers,' Reggie underwent surgery to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, the pins used in his surgery failed several months later.

Since then, Reggie has been receiving regular McTimoney Animal Association chiropractic treatment from Claire Lawrence Mctimoney Animal Therapist, which has helped manage the compensatory issues that arise from his altered gait. He also goes for regular hydrotherapy to help maintain his muscle mass and proprioception.

Despite his condition, Reggie is still able to lead a relatively normal life and even participate in a new sport called 'Hoopers' (dogs run a course of hoops rather than jumps).

Read more about Reggie's story here: https://mctimoneyanimal.co.uk/reggie-the-wobbly-dog/
