🐾 Arthritis in Cats: What Every Cat Owner Should Know 🐾

Did you know arthritis is common in cats, especially as they age? Unlike dogs, cats rarely show obvious signs of pain. Look for these subtle symptoms:

✔️ Hesitation or difficulty jumping, climbing, or using stairs.
✔️ Stiffness, limping, or slower movement after resting.
✔️ Reduced grooming, leading to a scruffy coat.
✔️ Avoiding interaction or showing irritability when touched.

What You Can Do:

Visit your vet to discuss arthritis management options.

Provide soft, accessible resting spots and ramps for easier movement.

Maintain a healthy weight to ease joint stress.

Consider joint supplements or medications as recommended by your vet.

Arthritis doesn’t have to mean discomfort for your cat. Early action can improve their quality of life! 🐱💛

🌟 A Special Visitor at the Clinic ! 🐍

We don’t see many exotic pets, but recently had the unique opportunity to meet Bella a beautiful Boa Constrictor and her owner, Gary!
🐍While we specialize in cats and dogs, we’re always happy to provide basic care or referrals for pets that are a little more “wild.” 🐾

Boa constrictors, like Bella, require specialized care, including the right environment, diet, and regular health checks with an experienced exotic vet. If you’re a reptile owner, we recommend keeping up with their unique care needs to ensure they live a long and healthy life!❤️🐍

❄️ Cold Weather Safety Tips for Your Pets ❄️
From all of us at StokewoodVets we want to ensure your furry companions stay safe and healthy this winter season! Here are some essential tips to protect your pets during cold weather:

1️⃣ Limit Outdoor Time: Frostbite and hypothermia are real risks for pets. Keep walks short and always monitor your pet for signs of discomfort.
2️⃣ Bundle Up: Short-haired pets or small breeds may need a cozy coat or sweater when heading outdoors.
3️⃣ Paw Protection: Snow, ice, and salt can irritate paws. Rinse and dry their feet after outings, and consider pet-safe paw balm or booties.
4️⃣ Safe, Warm Shelters: Keep pets indoors as much as possible. If they must be outside, provide an insulated shelter and ensure access to fresh, unfrozen water.
5️⃣ Beware of Toxic Hazards: Antifreeze spills and ice-melting products can be dangerous if ingested. Clean up spills immediately and use pet-safe options.
6️⃣ Monitor Their Health: Cold weather can worsen arthritis or respiratory issues. Keep an eye on older pets or those with health conditions.

🐾 If you have concerns about your pet’s health this winter, don’t hesitate to call us at 01202 532817. We’re here to help keep your pets safe, warm, and happy all season long! 🐾

Warning: Raisins & Mince Pies Are Toxic to Dogs! 🚨

🎄With the holiday season upon us, it’s important to remember that some festive treats can be dangerous for our furry friends. Raisins, grapes, and currants—commonly found in mince pies, fruitcakes, and puddings—are highly toxic to dogs and can lead to serious health problems, including acute kidney failure.

⚠️ Symptoms of Raisin/Mince Pie Ingestion:

Vomiting and diarrhea (often within hours)

Lethargy or weakness

Loss of appetite

Increased thirst and frequent urination

Kidney failure (in severe cases)

🩺 What to Do if Your Dog Eats Raisins or Mince Pies:

⚠️ Contact your veterinarian immediately—even if your dog seems fine ⚠️
**Do not wait for symptoms**

This lovely puppy, Sandy, presented to our practice after eating rasins in muesli! Emesis has been induced a few minutes after the ingestion and she left home safe and sound!❤️🐾

Wednesday 6th November marks National Stress Awareness Day, which seeks to raise awareness of the negative effects that stress can have on our health. While stress can sometimes serve as a helpful motivator, too much of it can negatively impact our mood, body, and mind. This is where our pets play an important role: they can greatly help reduce stress and boost mental well-being. Interacting with pets has a soothing effect on the body, helping to lower blood pressure, ease anxiety, and increase feelings of social support. Petting or cuddling animals can release oxytocin, a hormone that promotes relaxation and bonding, while also lowering cortisol levels, which are linked to stress. Feeling stressed? Take a few extra moments today to cuddle your pet and ease those feelings of tension.
