We're proud to offer cataract extraction surgery at all our centres, utilising our advanced, fully-equipped ophthalmic theatres. Our surgical approach mirrors the precision technique used in human cataract removal, ensuring the highest standard of care for your pets.

Here's a quick look at how we restore clear vision:

👁️ A tiny 2.8mm incision is made at the cornea's edge
👁️ We create a window in the front of the lens
👁️ An ultrasonic probe vibrates at a high frequency to break up and aspirate the lens fragments (phacoemulsification)
👁️ Finally, we insert an artificial intraocular lens into the now-empty capsular bag, which replaces the cataractous lens

At Veterinary Vision, we're committed to providing your pets with the clarity of vision they deserve. Get in touch to learn more about how we can help pets see the world more clearly again.

🌟🐾 Meet Annie the Alpaca! 🐾🌟

Today, we met an adorable baby Alpaca, Annie, who is just under three weeks old.

Annie was cared for by our Veterinary Ophthalmologist, Chris Dixon and Registered Veterinary Nurses Annabelle Burne and Lisa Cash.

Annie had a bit of a rough start with trauma to her eye at birth, but she's making a fantastic recovery! 🦙💕

We are delighted with Annie's progress and thankful for the referral from Intake Vets.

Here's to a bright future for our star patient! 💖

At Veterinary Vision, we're committed to supporting our fellow veterinarians. That's why we proudly offer complimentary telephone and email consultations to referring vets. To ensure we can offer the most precise advice for your cases, please include a summary of the case and photographs of the eyes when reaching out.

We understand capturing a clear photo of an eye can be tricky due to the reflective nature of the corneal surface.

Need a hand? Check out our Factsheets page for practical tips and tricks on how to snap a clear, diagnostic-quality image of the eye. This resource is designed to help you get the best possible advice for your patients, quickly and efficiently.

Together, we can ensure the best outcomes for our furry, feathery, and scaly patients >>

Our very own Nicola Clark took on the Lake District Ultra Challenge over two days earlier this month! 🏃‍♀️

The Lake District Ultra Challenge route started in Kendal on Saturday 8 June, and showcased some stunning scenery along Lake Windermere and Ambleside. The challenge also included high passes, nature reserves, and forests before heading back to Kendal.

Nicola was raising money for Alzheimer's Society because of the help and hope it has given to her mum, who lives with dementia, as well as the assistance it provides to those close to her.

Well done, Nicola!

Pompom visited Registered Veterinary Nurse Millie Motley last week for a routine checkup following his bilateral cataract surgery in August 2022.

🐶 Pompom is doing very well and is comfortable and visual post-operatively. During his visit, he tested these doggles out. He likes to visit the beach a lot, so these will help stop him from getting sand in his eyes.

Looking good, Pompom! Enjoy the seaside! 🏖️😎

We love heading into the weekend with feedback like this! 🙌

"I would not hesitate to highly recommend Veterinary Vision for your pet. From our first contact at referral, the team has provided exemplary service. They are all exceptionally knowledgeable, experienced, dedicated, and caring, paying attention to your pet and you as their owner.

"Our little dog Archie lost his vision to cataracts at the age of 9. A gentle soul, full of character and fun, he very quickly became too frightened even to move! He started to withdraw from us completely. The day following his surgery, I brought him home and was thrilled when he barked at the cat on the fence. What a moment!

"He is now loving life again. He plays with our daughter's puppy, enjoys his walks very much, and chooses the route himself. (I'm more than happy to let him.) He's quite the little character again.

"I honestly believe if Veterinary Vision had not been able to help, he wouldn't be with us now. He'd have just given up. It's the best money we've ever spent." - Hilary MacKenzie.

Thank you for your kind words, Hilary! We're so pleased we were able to help lovely Archie. 💕🐶

We're buzzing for 🐝

Check out these amazing facts about how bees see the world. 👀

Bee vision is highly specialised, with each aspect of their visual system tailored to meet the demands of their ecological niche. From the panoramic view provided by their compound eyes to the light-sensitive ocelli aiding in navigation, and their unique colour perception, bee eyes are a testament to the intricate and interconnected nature of life on Earth.

👁️ Bees have five eyes. Two large compound eyes and three small ocelli
🟣 Trichromatic, with the ability to see ultraviolet (UV) light
🏞️ Panoramic field of view
🧩 Low visual resolution (mosaic vision)
⏩ Rapid detection of movement
💡 Detection of polarised light to aid navigation

Our Operations Manager Nicola Clark, is tackling the Lake District Ultra Challenge over two days in June.

Nicola said: “I am tackling the 100km challenge to help people like my mum and the Alzheimer's Society who provide invaluable support.

“My mum is still with us but in terms of ‘being mum’ she is very much gone but I’m grateful to still have her here considering that there are so many that don’t.”

The Lake District Ultra Challenge route starts in Kendal on June 8 and takes in some stunning scenery along Lake Windermere and Ambleside, also including high passes, nature reserves and forests, before heading back to Kendal.

Meet Luca, the six-year-old Bloodhound who was recently treated at Veterinary Vision. 🐶

Much-loved Luca was referred to us with deteriorating vision due to excess skin sagging down from his forehead. Poor Luca was unable to walk straight and couldn't even see his toys when they were right in front of him.

After a five-hour intricate rhytidectomy surgery performed by Lead Ophthalmologist Lyndsay Moss and Clinical Director Gary Lewin, Luca's vision is now much improved.

Luca's owner, Sheila, told us that "Luca's quality of life has changed so much since his procedure. He really looks like he is enjoying life and can find us a lot more easily on walks."

We're so proud of his progress and are glad to have made such a difference. 💕

🐧 Did you know? Birds have evolved from dinosaurs and their eyes have adapted to the habitat that they occupy and the way in which they obtain food. The eyes of an owl hunting at night are quite different to that of a pigeon or a swimming penguin.

Our Clinical Director Chris Dixon has produced a fascinating series looking at how animals see the world compared to humans.

The field of view in birds varies significantly across species. Predatory birds, like eagles and hawks, have eyes positioned more towards the front, providing binocular vision that aids in depth perception critical for hunting. Conversely, birds like sparrows, whose eyes are more on the sides of their heads, have a wider field of view, which is crucial for detecting predators.

👁️‍🗨️ Ever wondered how our canine companions see the world?

Our Clinical Director, Chris Dixon, has published some remarkable research which reveals how our pets see the world compared to humans.

🐕 Today's focus is on dogs, who have a visual system that is well-suited to their roles as hunters and companions. The position and size of the forward-facing eyes will vary between breeds, with some dogs having a longer nose than others.

Most dogs will have a total visual field of 240 degrees, which is wider than the human visual field, but they only have approximately half the binocular overlap that we use for depth perception.

Find out more about this fascinating research on our website >> https://bit.ly/48y6pIY
