Hi, I’m Tom, the founder of Yora, the insect-based, sustainable dog food .

I've been working with the pet industry for a very long time. Just after finishing school I worked in a well-known pet store and worked my way up to become a creative director. I then set up my design agency, Junction Studio, which has helped to launch some of the finest pet foods available today. Working closely with these companies I've learned a lot about what makes a great pet food, and how much people care about pet nutrition.

Watching how successful the products I’d helped brand had become, I learned how many tons of food they were selling each year. It was only then that it occurred to me how many millions of tons of meat must be being fed to the world's cats and dogs and the environmental impact of pet food! I love pets, but it turns out that they're (quite innocently) not very good for the environment! I try to limit the amount of meat I eat, but cats and dogs are carnivores, so they obviously can't do that. I had my eureka moment when I tried an energy bar made from cricket flour. It was delicious, and I wondered if insect protein could be the alternative protein source that I was looking for.

After I had got a team on board with my idea, we spoke with expert entomologists and animal nutritionists and settled on Hermetia Illucens as our little miracle grub, because it's by far the best protein source for pets and the planet. It's not just a meat alternative, it's superlative! It out-performs meat in every way. In order to source the quantities of grubs that we needed, we had to look to Europe’s largest insect farm, Protix, based in Holland.
