I have been healing a few injuries but am now raring to get back trailing and instructing. I didn’t waste the time off! I managed to get a huge amount of CPD done and that skilling up is critical for my passion for nose work and how I progress as an instructor. I have attended seminars and workshops with Dr Kathy Connor, Elliot Connor, Kat Serafina, International Blood Hound Training Institute, and am now off to Canine Cognition course with Georgie Armstrong. Myself and the Malinois have seen a few AirBnb’s!! I have had some lovely compliments on Maddies skills 🐕 I will soon be adding Scent Work classes to MantrailingWestYorkshire. Trailing dates for November and December land tomorrow.

I have had several questions from handlers starting out on their Mantrailing journey about the harness and what to use. I have had a little photoshoot with my stuffy dog. Paddy is wearing a trailing harness by Julius K9. It suits my Malinois. On the R. at his paws is a Perfect fit and L. is a Truelove large £25 on Amazon. All of these fit my two Malinois who trail. What you are looking for is a Y shape up the chest. You want to avoid horizontal lines across the dogs chest which impede movement through the front legs. I would start out with the Truelove at that price point. The most important consideration that your dog is happy having the harness on. If this needs work please get in touch.

My 'I don't want to meet other dogs' Belgian Malinois is the reason I attended my first Mantrailing intro, and since then she has become a super trailing dog and I quickly got my Instructors Qualification under my belt! Maddie will try new things and make her own decisions. This is important for a dog who worries about the world outside their safe space (hers was training) It was never my goal that she would do activities that she didn't want to and we have had a great journey in Trailing because she has control over her environment at that moment. She leaves the game with success and endorphins. Her parade back to the car with her toy is a joy to watch. The article below explains how commonly held beliefs have impacted dogs negatively in the race to 'socialise' them. A good read.

Neutral. A great aim.
I realise this is going to be highly controversial for people that DO have a very social dog...but believe me you are in the minority.

Your dog does NOT need to stop, sniff and meet other dogs when out walking.
Your dog does not need to interact with dogs they do not know.
Dogs do not need to meet other dogs and play at a park.
Dogs do not need to have other dogs invade their space to "sniff each other"........They smelt them half way down the road.

This is also society's fault for perpetuating this myth that ALL dogs must be social and get on with ALL other dogs.

They do not....and for the MAJORITY of dogs they NEVER will.

In fact it is damaging to a dog to expect them to interact with all other dogs.

Neutral is a great aim.

Indifference is great !!!!

Expecting interactions can affect many dogs negatively and is a definite causation of reactivity in dogs.

I am not talking about puppies here as they are usually all social (and should be heavily socialised when young)....this is purely aimed at dogs (though some from 5- 6 months onward). Every dog falls into the social spectrum and the actual number of adult dogs that are TRULY dog social is TINY (around 10 %) .

10 % of all dogs are truly social. They enjoy most dogs company.

40 % of all dogs are dog selective. They may only like their own breed, small white dogs, large female dogs etc.

40 % of all dogs are tolerant. They tolerate most dogs but choose only to interact with a select few.

10 % of all dogs are anti ALL dogs (apart from perhaps another family dog).

Where does your dog sit ?
Of course this is an approximate percentage and I encourage you to look up the dog sociability spectrum to see where your dog sits.

This is why being neutral when seeing other dogs should be the goal....not interacting, not sniffing and certainly not accepting every other dog in your dogs space. Accepting that there are other dogs in the world....and that they do NOT have to meet every other dog.

Dogs naturally become FAR less social as they age. Yet people expect them to friendly to every dog they meet....and for the other dog to be friendly back.
Disinterest when other dogs are around can save everyone from SO many issues. Advocate for your dog, you will enhance your bond because your dog can start trusting your decisions more.

Advocate for your dog, stop encouraging your dog that is deeply uncomfortable and barking to calm down and play with its new "friend".

When I have several days of trailing I need downtime. I thought we would get away in the caravan next Jubilee weekend but it is looking too crowded for our three super Malinois to deal with so……..I am doing a Jubilant progression session on Friday 3rd @ 10 am. My steps are off the scale this weekend! Progression Monday in a fabulous woodland new to me. Voss has improved in confidence and we make sure his final trail is very positive for him. Bo moved on to scent article starts and gates, she nailed it. Nutmeg did our first walking misper trail and nailed it. Maddies trail not so spectacular as I did not pack a small enough toy to hide in my jacket and she knew I had ‘precious’ up my jumper. She did start off well but then messed about wanting toy. Finally she found her misper and got toy after her intensity trail. Good mornings work handlers!

At MantrailingWestYorkshire you will work with a certified dog trainer and Mantrailing U.K. certified instructor who has over a decade of experience with reactive dog adaption and training. Owners of high drive breeds or reactive dogs are welcome to meet me before committing to the sport. Mantrailing is a beneficial sports activity for both ends of the lead.

Mantrailing is a sport every dog can join in with, be them nervous, shy, reactive, anxious or barky.

Each dog is worked individually and to the level which suits them. Our instructors are taught how to set up the introductions and follow on sessions to suit reactive dogs.

Lovely double blind trail by Maddie. She lost her trail once and didn’t even resort to snatching grass. Got back on it and had much more belief in herself. Smashed it.

We have had a great weekend of trailing. Introduction on Sunday and progression on Monday. 7 dog and handler teams out for several hours of bonding and fun. Well done all!

Great team-work Saturday morning progression session. Boo, Voss, Alice and Boss did a great job with lovely handling all round. Perfect weather for trailing. Maddie missed the session so that I could trail Puck so in the afternoon I took Maddie out which gave me at least 5 hours of trailing!!

I am sorry to do this guys but I have to cancel progression trailing tomorrow. The venue has had trees down and football matches are cancelled. Clare, Nicky and Charlotte. I will post a new date. We do trail in winter chill and rain but this weather is a safety issue. Puck was looking forward to it.

Down two housemate dogs today with that rotten virus. Speedy recovery Rufus! Team Ruby did a brilliant job today and we have figured out the balance between handlers and rewards. Team Alice showed the benefits of this game for a tripod dog who did a great job and she is a more mature gil but you would not know it. Well done guys in minus temperatures!! Puck did a cracking trail for such a loon.

Weather for Saturday's Introduction looking good! Cold but good. If your dog wears a coat (mine does) bring it, just get your harness adjusted ahead of time before you get those cold fingers. Do feed normal breakfast.
