Cooling down - is this something you take seriously after riding?

Just like a hard session of exercise for us, the horse can also get stiff muscles after a ride, but taking the time to add in a cool down session may help your horse recover quicker and suffer less pain and stiffness associated with exercise.

If you struggle to know how to cool down properly after riding we have some tips for you here 👉 https://www.cryochaps.co.uk/top-tips-for-cooling-down-your-horse/

Why do we advise that you retighten your Cryochaps after application?

Imagine holding an icepack on your own leg - in order to feel the benefit you need the ice to come into contact with your skin. If you wanted to feel the ice around the whole of your leg you would need something that could bend and shape around your leg - not a solid block of ice.

That's how Cryochaps work.

To have effective cold transfer as much of the Cryochap needs to be in contact with the horses leg as possible. Our boots are gel filled so that they mould and shape to the leg and therefore give the best contact and cold transfer! If you retighten after a few minutes the gel will have softened to allow the boot to really shape to the horses leg.

Why is airflow so important in horse boots?

Heat build-up within the horse’s legs is a known issue with horse boots and bandages, due to their insulating effect. With the Exoskeleton boot from Cryochaps, a process of forced convection allows air to pass over the back of the leg, the faster the leg goes through the flight phase the greater the cooling effect.

Exoskeleton air flow boots for horses could minimise potentially harmful heat build-up during exercise.

It's Cryochaps weather! As temperatures rise it's even more important to make sure you cool those legs after exercise.

WHY?????

During exercise, your horse’s legs will heat up. This heat can reach potentially damaging levels, particularly during fast or intense work. Over time, repeated exposure to high temperatures can make the soft tissues more vulnerable to more significant damage and injuries.

Cryochaps cooling ice boots for horses can be used immediately after exercise and have been tested to prove decreases in surface leg temperatures.

Are your tendon boots flexible or hard, and which is better?

As there is no level of impact testing certification for horse boots, we need to look at materials tested for humans. In published studies, hard energy deflecting products were superior to prevent forces being transferred through the materials.

This makes sense as logically you would probably prefer to wear a hard hat on a building site versus a neoprene hat to protect against objects falling on your head. To transfer this logic to horse boots soft flexible neoprene brushing boots may not afford the same impact protection as a hardshell tendon boot or a plated cross-country boot.

Just why is it important to cool the leg to below 10°C? 🤔❄❄❄

Cooling therapy serves to constrict blood vessels, reduce inflammation, and provide pain relief by numbing nerve endings.

Studies have shown that in order for the internal tissues and tendons to reach an optimum temperature of between 15-19 °C the external skin temperature has to be 10°C.

Our cooling boots for horses quickly cool the surface leg temperature to under 10 degrees. Low leg temperatures can be maintained up to 1hr after removal.

What's the best way to cool horses legs after an injury?

Cooling the leg can be done by cold hosing or with ice boots for horses. Ice boots for horses such as Cryochaps, have been evaluated and are as effective as cold hosing at reducing temperatures.

Horse ice boots and cold hosing will have an influence on reducing swelling. One of the more efficient ways to reduce swelling is to use horse ice wraps that can administer an element of compression. The combination of cooling and compression is proven to have greater benefits on clinical outcomes than just ice or cooling alone. It is therefore a natural step to use a compression ice boot for horse leg injuries.

Do you wet the leg before applying Cryochaps?

We advise that you do for the best cooling results! This is because the air trapped in the hair will impede the cold transfer. So by wetting the leg you can increase the cold transfer.

What do you need to consider when cooling horses legs? Do you want to:

1. Remove excess heat from work and return the legs to a normal body temperature?

Or

2. Lower the temperature of the legs below a normal body temperature for an anti-inflamatory effect?

What are the products available on the market?

We test 4 products over the next few weeks to see the effects of cooling on the legs!

Science incoming!

Why is it so important to get the leg temperature down after work?

Exercise is said to cause tiny tears in tissues, including muscle, tendons and ligaments. This is known as micro trauma. However, rapidly reducing tissue temperatures after exercise by using ice baths has three main impacts:

❄️ Constricts the blood vessels. This flushes waste products, such as lactic acid, out of the affected tissues
❄️ Decreases metabolic activity. This slows down the physiological processes that cause inflammation
❄️ Reduces swelling and tissue breakdown

Cryochaps act as an ice and compression application and could be seen to mimic the ice bath effects. When ice and compression are removed, there is a sudden rush of reoxygenated blood, and oxygen is known to kick start the healing process.

Do horse boots need to be lightweight? 🤔

We think lightweight boots are better and here is why:

1. Minimise strain on the horse's legs
2. Reduce heat build-up
3. Minimise risk of rubbing
4. Less fatigue for the horse
5. Decreases the risk of injury

What are your thoughts?

Read more here https://www.cryochaps.co.uk/why-should-horse-boots-be-lightweight/

Exoskeleton horse exercise boots weigh in at 200g, and are one of the lightest on the market. They hold minimal sweat and water so are unlikely to change their weights significantly if they do get wet. They can be used for every discipline and also are one of the most protective horse boots, as well as having excellent vents for the best in market air flow horse boots. Phew - that's A LOT!

What do you look for when buying boots for protection? 🧐

Here's the process we go though...

1. Review why you need to wear boots - is your horse prone to strike injuries or do they brush?
2. Decide the area you want to protect with your boots.
3. Choose your boot and review testing results from the manufacturer - will they protect the area you want.
4. Consider the effects of heating caused by the boot - does your choice have adequate airflow.
5. Check they suit your horse!

The Evolution of Cryochaps

It was like Goldilocks and the 3 bears trying to find an ice boot, that covered every area needed, stayed cold enough, & didn’t slip or get kicked across the yard. We had already tried ice cubes and cheap wine coolers wrapped in a sport boot but they were a faff to get on and slipped, which meant if I turned my back for a second, they had been destroyed by being trodden on or kicked loose. Cold hosing 4 legs was time consuming and wasted water.

How hard could this be to make an effective ice boot???? Armed with a pair of stretch jeans and a pillow case the design of Cryochaps started.

A year later we had won a BETA innovation award and Cryochaps were born. If you have a dream or an idea just do not give up, you can make it work. Dreams can come true.
