⚠️ Hard ground warning ⚠️

At the start of the summer we didn’t think we’d be saying this this year, but with all the recent dry weather the ground is really starting to harden up! ☀️

🐎 Exercising your horse on hard ground can cause concussion-related lameness issues. When the horse’s hoof meets the ground, it’s subjected to a great deal of concussive force. When the ground is softer, it absorbs some of the impact and provides cushioning to the foot - but the harder the ground, the less force is absorbed and the more stress on the horse.

It’s not only ridden horses who are at risk of concussive injuries from hard ground - any retired oldies who like to show you they’ve still got it by galloping round their paddock can also do themselves some damage! If this sounds like your horse, consider bringing them in a little earlier than usual.

Shod horses are also at greater risk from hard ground than unshod horses, as unshod horses actually absorb some of the concussive forces through their frogs.

We’ll be sharing some of the conditions hard ground can cause in our next post.

With the farmers starting to cut their fields down to stubble and the eventing season finally in full swing, we know it can be really tempting to both you and your horses to go for a good blast, but make sure you take the surface into account before you do 🙏🐎

📸 Pictured are clients Hannah and Percy galloping their way to 5th place in the 90 at Solihull Riding Club. The ground had been well prepared with good grass cover to help provide some cushioning!

One racehorse releasing after her session yesterday. 20 mins later she was flat out asleep, I didn’t take a pic as I didn’t want to disturb her rest. She received a combination of McTimoney Animal Chiropractic, Masterson Method and myofascial techniques to release muscular tension and improve performance.

It’s Saturday and the sun is out 😎 Time to treat my own young horse Ferdi and also practice his ground tying. He is rising 6 and is a whopping 18 hands. Physically he has needed time to mature so has only done short periods of light ridden work. When his body has needed a break he has had it. That doesn’t mean training has stopped. I just change to ground work including lots of desensitisation such as walking over plastic.

Following up on my visit to Animal Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Conference, I thought I better explain what McTimoney Animal Chiropractic is. It my 20th(!) year in business and McTimoney was my first bodywork qualification. I still use the techniques on the majority of patients and the results are still surprising me.

Following on from their super win at BRC Dressage to Music Championships, Cookie’s owner Janet shared these lovely words. Cookie has 6-8 weekly sessions from me to help keep him supple. We also discuss exercises to help him get stronger in his work and hopefully move up the dressage levels.

“Where does Equine Lameness come from?” webinar from McTimoney Animal Association

Join renowned McTimoney Animal Association chiropractors, Dr Emma Punt and Nikki Routledge, as they delve into the many causes of equine lameness.

As well the stress and often vast expense of caring for a lame horse, it often takes time for healing to occur and soundness to return. However, it is even more frustrating when the cause or source of the lameness cannot be identified.

In this FREE webinar, brought to you by McTimoney College of Chiropractic, you will learn about the less known, but highly impactful incidences of body lameness in horses, how it manifests, and what to look for.

Any Welsh A pony owners, your help is needed in this laminitis study.

On this page Dr Fowler breaks down the most talked about equine topics and provides a unique insight into why sometimes conclusions are much less conclusive than we might think........

Lovely to see Claire Warman - Veterinary Physiotherapist & McTimoney Animal Chiropractic today.

Claire is part of my Fell pony, Echo, arthritis and pain management regime. She helps to keep 24 year old Echo moving and supple. I have found regular physio to be more beneficial than several other treatments available.

Claire also treats dogs, so if you’re looking for a veterinary physio for your athletic or arthritic dog, Claire is your woman!

Thank you for all your great work on my old ladies 🙏

Great case demonstrating how McTimoney Animal Chiropractic can be used to manage “wobblers” in dogs.

Great case demonstrating how McTimoney Animal Chiropractic can be used to manage “wobblers” in dogs.

Meet Reggie, a wobbly dog who's not giving up...

Reggie is a 6-year-old Doberman who developed a swaying gait and lost his enthusiasm for agility. After an MRI revealed he had a neural disease called 'wobblers,' Reggie underwent surgery to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, the pins used in his surgery failed several months later.

Since then, Reggie has been receiving regular McTimoney Animal Association chiropractic treatment from Claire Lawrence Mctimoney Animal Therapist, which has helped manage the compensatory issues that arise from his altered gait. He also goes for regular hydrotherapy to help maintain his muscle mass and proprioception.

Despite his condition, Reggie is still able to lead a relatively normal life and even participate in a new sport called 'Hoopers' (dogs run a course of hoops rather than jumps).

Read more about Reggie's story here: https://mctimoneyanimal.co.uk/reggie-the-wobbly-dog/

Thank you to ZoomingPixels for their photography.
