RIP 🌹 Beautiful Rosie 🌹
Last Sunday didn’t really end the way we thought they would, we’ve been walking Rosie everyday for around the last 6 years, Rosie was a solo doggie who preferred humans over doggies and was the last walk of the day, she loved a plod, a sniff and copious treats if she could bribe us, a beautiful companion to her mum, she will be sorely missed by all who knew her 💔

Does your dog have a reliable recall?

Does your dog turn their ears off when out on walks? Perhaps their recall is great at home but as soon as you unclip that lead they forget you exist and you just can't compete with the lure of rabbits, birds or other dogs!

Join us on the foundation Recall and Connection in the Environment session to learn how to train a whistle recall, strengthen your recall and more importantly maintain connection with your dog out and about, no matter where you are. This two hour session, aimed at beginners, will take place Sunday 11th February at 11am.

Alternatively, if your dog already has a recall but as soon as you add distractions it goes out the window then why not get some help on improving it so it’s really reliable?

Join us on the intermediate Recall and Connection session to learn how to strengthen that recall and proof it against all kinds of distractions so that it is solid no matter where you are or what is going on.

This two hour session, aimed at dogs at an intermediate level or above, will take place Sunday 11th February at 2pm.

All training is held at our private training field in Collingbourne Kingston

Raising a Puppy - The force free way to a happy, confident pup and a great relationship

PREVENT & MANAGE
REINFORCE
TEACH
INTERRUPT

Prevent what you can wherever possible and manage the pup’s environment so that he has little or no opportunity to go wrong. This means puppy proof the house, move books from the lower shelves on the bookshelves – (I had to relocate the bottles in the wine rack in the kitchen when my pup was younger!!), put bins behind cupboard doors, use stair gates and close doors to prevent access to areas where the pup may chew precious furnishings, pick up all Persian rugs temporarily and more importantly put things away such as shoes, children’s toys etc.

Any time your dog engages in an unwanted behaviour, take a step back and ask yourself how you could have prevented it.

Reinforce your pup for offering behaviours that are agreeable. This can be anything or can even be the absence of an unwanted behaviour. The best way to do this is to have a pot of small yummy treats, such as hot dog sausage, liver, cheese etc, say 30 in number and set yourself a challenge to catch your dog doing something that you like and would like him to do again, 30 times during the day. It could be lying in his bed, choosing to keep front feet on the floor when a visitor comes in, coming in from the garden, chewing his chew toy, the possibilities are endless (think I nicked that from an advert). To start with you may struggle to find 30 opportunities but because dogs do what works for them you will soon need more treats in that pot because your dog is going to be throwing these behaviours at you left, right and centre. These are behaviours that you haven’t asked for by the way and this is by far the easiest way for a dog to learn.

Teach your dog what you would like him to do. The obvious ones are to walk nicely on a lead, come when called, sit, lie down, stay…. There are lots of ways to teach your dog but it is important that whatever method you choose it is easy to understand and fair to the dog. Think back to how you learned in school. I bet your favourite subject was the one where the teacher made it fun and enjoyable to learn and motivated you with praise and rewards for good work. I tend to do pretty much all of my dogs’ training during play so lots of fetch and tug games used as rewards and the dog is having a ton of fun whilst learning.

Interrupt unwanted behaviour. I know from experience that it is not always possible to prevent all unwanted behaviours when you have a puppy.

It is very difficult not to get cross when your pup chews your favourite CD or expensive shoes, it is human nature. However in terms of your relationship with your dog and insuring that it doesn’t continue into adulthood you really do have to take a deep breath and try not to scowl, the damage is done nothing will undo it now.

So you teach your dog a positive interrupter. This can be a word or a noise, anything you like, as long as it doesn’t frighten or startle your pup. My pup’s positive interrupter is “Moss” said in a happy voice. I can use his name because I have never said it crossly or to tell him off. You could use a “Yay!!” or a kissy noise for example. All you do is use food treats, you can move to a toy later, and say the word as you give him a treat. Repeat a few hundred times. Yes really! Now watch his response to that word next time you say it when he is doing something you would like to interrupt. Once interrupted redirect him onto something more productive.

If you interrupt unwanted behaviours in a way that frightens your dog he will simply learn that these behaviours are dangerous to do when you are present and will seek opportunities to engage in them when your back is turned. And yes the dog could learn to engage in the behaviours in order to be positively interrupted BUT he will only do it when you are watching, no point when you are not, so now you can interrupt before the damage is done and meanwhile teach the dog a more rewarding behaviour instead.

Think of your relationship with you puppy as a bank account, every positive interaction is a deposit, every time you punish you make a withdrawal. As soon as your account goes overdrawn then things will just go from bad to worse but keep a nice healthy bank balance and you and you pup will soon end up as millionaires in the relationship stakes.

It’s been a busy summer as we welcomed Chris and Luc, their boys and the lovely Stanley viszla to the team. We have also needed to restructure the business to accommodate the VAT man. That sounds good but trust me everyone wants their piece to the pie so this hasn’t been an easy journey as we all need to earn a living!

Sadly we have also had to say goodbye to some of our oldest fur family that passed rainbow bridge as well as saying a fond fairwell to the beautiful Maureen, hooman mum of Charley Girl. Charley has now moved to Lincolnshire to be with her hooman sister 💔 we will miss them all very much 🥺

However, we can open our books for new hosts and discussions with another Old Town local who has expressed an interest in becoming a boarder for us. We like to keep it local because that means we can better offer support should it be required, we are a family, your Paw-Fit family. We hope you had a good summer, we are already looking forward to some dryer days! Thank you for your ongoing support 😘 🐾🐾

“Harry touched many hearts. Our life together was short but our love and memories eternal. He inspired beauty and is the reason I’m grateful for life. I miss my sweet husband constantly, yet he’s with me in each way I honour his short but remarkable life. That’s why I’m dedicating a yellow rose to him as part of Prospect Hospice’s ‘Remember Me’ display. To us, yellow symbolises hope, joy and peace; it was our wedding theme. It’s the perfect keepsake and I’m donating to a charity who supported us through our darkest days and never stopped, so that they can help other families like ours.” Sinéad

Our roses, which are kindly sponsored by Arval UK offer you the opportunity to remember a loved one with a beautiful handcrafted, metal rose. From 9 to 30 September, you will be invited to see your rose alongside hundreds of others installed in the hospice gardens, before making its way to you to cherish in your home or garden.

There is only one month left for you to order your dedicated rose and be part of this very special display. Place your order at www.prospect-hospice.net/roses by Friday 18 August.

🦷 Dental hygiene 🦷

Raw meaty bones are natures toothbrush. They offer a wealth of health benefits. The meaty tissue flosses the teeth and the bone scrapes away tartar. Chewing also combats boredom and can relieve mild anxiety or frustration.

Regularly offering a variety of air dried chews are a great way to make sure they are getting a good chew session in and using different teeth to tackle different animal parts.

Dental tools like scrapers and scalers can make a huge difference for those hard to reach corners of the jaw. Using these takes a lot of patience and a good trusting relationship with your dog.

Don’t be fooled by 'dental sticks' sold at your local supermarket, or the plastic-like starch chews molded into various shapes.

Give your dog a raw, meaty bone!

The way that we need our dogs to walk on a lead is so totally unnatural to them!

We owe it to them to train lead walking skills with kindness and patience!

*No application of negative stimuli - no jerking, no yanking, no choke, no prong, no shock!

*Plenty of rewards, plenty of praise, plenty of positive reinforcement at the frequency needed!
