Get your horse better from Arthritis

Bit of a controversial one, and I mean no disrespect to any individuals that do these...
but being a highly scrutinised professional in a regulated healthcare profession, with 2 degrees, it is quite frustrating when popularity of certain 'Methods' far outweighs us 'normal' people just doing evidence based practice, based on the science, that makes it adaptable for every horse.

Secrets of Sitting clinic result...
This rider had been through a hell of an ordeal, with serious injuries that had limited her riding for 6 years. One clinic gave her amazing results; "I feel like I've come home" is some of the best feedback I've ever had đ
Tired from a kids holiday, making your horseys feel better makes me feel better! It's only been a week, but I can't wait to get my hands back on lovely horsey fur again and take a big whiff đ

1. Stop comparing yourself to others; you only see what other people CHOOSE to show you, you don't see their struggles and sacrifices.
2. If your horse has medical or soundness issues that mean you can't go out competing or gallop around flying over jumps, or you just feel too guilty to push them into harder work... change the negative narrative into positive; think of all the things they can do, ridden or unridden.
3. You can get a surprising boost of endorphins and positive effects on your mental health by thinking of it like taking a dog for a walk. Nature-bathing is even better with your horse by your side! Plus they get enrichment with a bit natural foraging, and less expectations. A real relationship-boost -win win!
4. Putting up with aches & pains in your own body gets you down without even realising. Although people put their horses first when it comes to spending money on treatments, you could be adding to strain on their body, as well as not being in the right headspace. Get Physio for yourself when you have your horse done -and actually DO the exercises prescribed!
5. Most people don't actually breathe properly. It's even more important for riders to use the diaphragm, as poor breathing patterns reduce your ability to absorb the movement of your horse's back, blocking you both and leading to discomfort. Get your physio to assess and teach you, then remember to practise. ALL. THE. TIME.
A lot of behavioural 'problems' are simply down to horses not being given what they need as a species.
They should not be confined, in a stable or barn, kept away from equine companions.
I am fully aware that nature can be cruel and wild horses can suffer with pain. But when I say horses should be 'free from pain', I mean the majority of domesticated horses that have human-inflicted pain, because of what we do with them.
Poor fitting tack, harsh handling, poor riding skills (AKA needing control), or even not managing painful conditions in the best way through lack of knowledge.
Let's all be better, and respect horses for being horses. The beautiful, forgiving, complex creatures they are.

I see horses and ponies that have just been injected but nothing has changed, despite following the Vetsâ instructions.
The lameness or pain behaviour is still there, which they thought would be resolved.
So now theyâre stuck because they donât know what else to do, other than stop their horse working.
Itâs not as simple as âmedicating the jointâ and here is why.
1. Did you know there are 3 main types of steroid that can be injected?
Just because one doesnât help, doesnât mean a different one wonât.
You need to know about each substance, and discuss it with your Vet.
2. Steroids are brilliant for when the joint is in a certain state.
If itâs not the right time, it wonât make any difference.
Know when and why steroids help, and when they donât, to avoid making costly mistakes.
3. When a horse is lame, or shows behavioural signs of pain, they canât use words to tell us exactly where & how it feels.
So we can only go on what images show.
When a joint looks arthritic on an x-ray, we assume thatâs where the symptoms are.
This isnât always the case.
You need team-work to get the route of the problem.
4. When a joint is painful with Osteoarthritis, muscles tighten up to âprotectâ the area. Ligaments and joint capsules are also affected by the arthritis process.
The joint itself may improve with steroid, but the other tissues need to be addressed to actually improve your horseâs movement and signs/symptoms.
5. Owners often request their horsesâ hocks to be medicated, but is there proof of Arthritis there?
Even if X-rays show it in the hocks, there could be other joint(s) with Osteoarthritis, causing the pain.
Some joints also have more than one joint space.
Thorough assessment with a Physiotherapist, working with your Vet, plus multiple X-rays may be needed.
6. Are you looking for the lameness to be 100% resolved, without changing anything else?
Did you expect that behaviour to just stop?
There are lots factors to get ri
Believe it or not this sensitive mare was a bit tricky to treat at the beginning, as she really didn't trust anyone and was very sore. Now this was after she gained enough trust in me to get the best release of her facial muscles (which were extremely tight -teamwork with dentist in progress), then she just dropped into a deep snooze while doing some withers mobilisations (also were too sore to do initially). Absolutely loving our progress with her đ„°

When asked what my background is to have learned all that, I was very proud to say it's the NHS that has taught me so much (which is highly applicable to animals, in my profession)

Absolutely love my animal job, and no offense but it's the icing on the cake when I get to spend extra time without owners there, having cuddles & scratches. Especially with this beautiful creature đ„°

Ricky's pelvic tilt, caudal weight shift exercise
It's easy to come across various 'core' exercises to do with your horse/pony, but although they seem simple, it's actually very important to consult an appropriate qualified professional. Some exercises might not be suitable for the individual, a lot might be perfectly suitable but the effectiveness depends on the technique.
Here is Ricky, who I prescribed caudal weight shifts on 3 legs, due to difficulty maintaining balance/weakness of hindlimb stabilising muscles. His lovely owner had been practising them regularly, but he started to fight against it, so because she listened to him, was just doing them less often. On their review appointment, it was a subtle difference in the amount of pressure required and speed, which when adjusted, allowed Ricky to do the exercise effectively without losing control and therefore no longer snatched away.
The aim is to get an active pelvic tilt with increased weightbearing, activating the hindquarter & abdominal stabilising muscles.
Great job Olivia Kenning and Ricky, and thanks for the demo đ
