So we had this WHOPPING egg laid yesterday by one of our hens, it weighed 154g!!! - laid by a newly laying hen.😵‍💫.

Don’t forget a large egg weight is between 63g and 72g in weight. This egg is over DOUBLE the max weight of a large egg.

This evening we cracked it open😱 to see what was inside.

We of course checked the hen to make sure she is ok. But pleased to say there are no ill effects from passing such a large egg. The outer shell was very thin, so this made it easier for the hen to lay.

I can’t add the eggsiting egg opening video to this post, so will do a second post to show you all what was inside when we cracked it open.

The GOOD NEWS we have all been waiting for – as from 00:01 on Tuesday 18th April 2023 the compulsory housing order originally imposed in England and Wales on our chickens due to Avian Influenza, is being lifted.

Poultry and other captive birds will no longer need to be housed undercover, unless they are in a DEFRA/APHA Protection Zone, and will be allowed to be free range.

While the avian flu risk levels have been reduced to ‘medium’, infection will still be present in the environment. All bird keepers should take proactive measures to prepare outside areas in advance the lifting of the housing measures. Eg disinfecting hard surfaces, netting off ponds, and deterring wild birds from your garden.

Further advice can be found - Bird keepers must maintain scrupulous biosecurity standards as housing measures set to be lifted - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Interactive map - Avian Influenza Export Health Certification Check (arcgis.com)

The UK has faced its largest ever outbreak of bird flu with over 330 cases confirmed across the country since October 2021. Scrupulous biosecurity is the most effective method of disease control available, and all bird keepers should apply enhanced measures at all times to prevent the risk of future outbreaks and to keep your chickens safe.

We stock the advised DEFRA disinfectant to ensure your ground is biosecure and free from avian flu, thus enabling your hens to free range again. If you have not already got some in your cupboard, please get in touch as we have them in stock.

Some GOOD NEWS at last, but avian flu is still out there – I had notifications last night of two more cases just been confirmed, so please stay vigilant.

PLEASE READ – URGENT

Yesterday I received the following notification from APHA/DEFRA “New housing measures to protect poultry and captive birds from avian influenza across England will come into force from 00:01 on Monday 07 November 2022. This means it will be a legal requirement for ALL bird keepers to keep their birds indoors/under cover and to follow strict biosecurity measures in order to limit the spread and to eradicate the disease. More information at: GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/bird-flu-latest-situation-avian-influenza-prevention-zone-declared-across-great-britain”

It is essential that all poultry keepers, whether you have just 1 or 100,000 birds, adhere to the compulsory actions put in place by DEFRA to protect your birds and stop the spread of Avian Flu. These cases can occur anywhere, and affect anyone’s birds, therefore it is important that the DEFRA legislation is adhered to, and all birds are "housed" and kept under cover.

Remember you have a legal obligation to comply and to keep your birds as safe possible by taking the following steps:-

• Keep all poultry ‘inside’ an enclosed run, which must have a covered roof (tarpaulin will do) to prevent wild birds or their droppings coming in to contact with your birds. DO NOT free range your birds.

• Use a DEFRA approved disinfectant foot bath at the gateway to your chicken pen (so you do not walk the virus into your chicken coop). We stock and use the DEFRA approved disinfectant Virkon S which is ideal as it is effective against Avian Influenza.

• Keep the ground inside the chicken run dry and clean by putting down fresh Easichick or Woodchip in your chicken run.

• Use Agrisec 250 Plus 2kg or Natures Grub Ground Sanitiser 2.5kg inside your chicken coop to keep it dry and free from bacteria – it is a super absorbent sanitiser DEFRA approved disinfectant powder which will also remove any ammonia build up in the air. This sanitiser can also be used in the chicken run too. Change the bedding regularly to ensure the hens have a dry, comfortable coop. Make sure the house has plenty of ventilation as the hens will produce a lot of moisture overnight and even in winter, they do need fresh air to circulate.

To relieve chicken boredom in the run, hang up treats such as corn on the cob, cabbages or peck blocks (we stock a variety of flavours). If pecking does seem to become a problem use an anti-pecking spray to deter further bad behaviour.

If you have any questions or concerns about how to look after your hens please give us a call.

Keep up to date with developments from DEFRA use this link. If you suspect your flock may have Bird Flu please contact APHA direct. If you come across any dead wild birds, report them to the Defra Rural Services Helpline on 03000 200 301. The whole of the UK is currently under a Prevention Zone, but if you live within 10km of a confirmed outbreak you will also fall within a Protection or Surveillance Zone. Use this map to check where these areas are.

The symptoms to look out for in infected birds included a swollen head, blue discolouration of the neck and throat, loss of appetite, respiratory distress, diarrhoea, fewer eggs laid, increased mortality. Unfortunately, some of these symptoms are common during the winter months, or due to the extra stress felt by the birds because of being confined, but it is always better to get them looked over if you have concerns.

Those of us who are not poultry keepers can assist with the prevention of further spread by being sure to report dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks), or other dead wild birds such as gulls or birds of prey, to the Defra Rural Services Helpline on 03000 200 301.

To try to help everyone we have plenty of the products in stock, we feel are most important to you during this avian flu lock-down. See my website for more details. This includes all sizes of Diatom, and Agrisec 250 Plus, Natures Grub ground sanitising powder/coop sanitising powder, Scarper anti-pecking spray, violet spray, all sizes and many flavours of peck blocks treats and of course Virkon S disinfectant.

Why not give us a call today get your bio-security up to date, and purchase a few treats for the girls at the same time?

Unfortunately the number of cases of Avian Influenza across the country has significantly increased over the past couple...
18/10/2022

Unfortunately the number of cases of Avian Influenza across the country has significantly increased over the past couple of weeks, and as a result the Animal and Plant Health Agency have now confirmed that Great Britain has been placed into an AIPZ (Avian Influenza Prevention Zone) as of midday (17th October).

These requirements mean that strict biosecurity measures must be in place for every chicken keeper, whether you have one bird or a large flock. This includes having a foot-bath with a DEFRA approved disinfectant at the entrance to your chicken pen. Our Trugs are ideal for footbaths, are available in a range of colours, and we have a DEFRA approved disinfectant available- Virkon S.

All food/water for your birds must also be kept under cover and away from wild birds. Also ensure any treats you give your hens will not attract wild birds. Waterfowl must not be kept in the same pen as poultry.

Although these measures do not yet go as far as a mandatory housing order (unless you are in Norfolk, Suffolk and parts of Essex where a housing order is already in place), I would advise you to keep your flock under cover now to safeguard their welfare.

If you don't yet have a long term undercover area for your hens then you must look into getting this in place now as it is very likely that a housing order will come into force shortly.

More information is available in the press release on GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/avian-influenza-prevention-zone-declared-across-great-britain

Avian influenza Prevention Zone has been declared across Great Britain making it a legal requirement for all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures

Avian Flu - update.

Please note everyone who lives in NORFOLK, SUFFOLK and parts of ESSEX. DEFRA/APHA have announced that:-

"Mandatory housing measures for all poultry and captive birds in Norfolk, Suffolk and parts of Essex are to be introduced from 00:01 on 12 October 2022, following a decision by the United Kingdom’s Chief Veterinary Officer.

The housing order legally requires all bird keepers in these hotspots to keep their birds indoors and to follow stringent biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks from the disease, regardless of type or size. Bird keepers are advised to consult the interactive map to check if they are impacted and should then read the regional AIPZ with housing measure declaration which sets out the requirements in Norfolk, Suffolk and parts of Essex.

All poultry gatherings, including at fairs, shows and markets, remain banned, due to a large number of flocks mixing together and the risk posed by any infections spreading across the country."

I will publish any further announcements as and when I receive them.

Stay vigilant and continue to carry out your biosecure measures to keep your poultry safe.

I am finally very pleased to advise you that the mandatory housing measures for poultry and captive birds, which were introduced across the United Kingdom to help stop the spread of bird flu, will be lifted from 00:01 on Monday 2 May 2022.

Poultry and other captive birds will no longer need to be housed undercover from 2nd May 2022, unless they are in a Protection Zone, and will be allowed to be kept/free range outside.

While the risk levels have been reduced to ‘medium’ infection may still be present in the environment. All bird keepers should take proactive measures to prepare outside areas in advance the lifting of the housing measures. Please the PDF below to advise you on what to do next to keep your hens safe.

Further advice can be found below:

Scrupulous biosecurity is the most effective method of disease control available, and all bird keepers should apply enhanced measures at all times to prevent the risk of future outbreaks and to keep your chickens safe.

Yesterday I received the following notification from APHA/DEFRA “New housing measures to protect poultry and captive birds from avian influenza across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will come into force from 00:01 on Monday 29 November 2021. This means it will be a legal requirement for all bird keepers to keep their birds indoors/under cover and to follow strict biosecurity measures in order to limit the spread and to eradicate the disease. Sadly, as usually happens at this time of year, there are many confirmed cases of the Avian Influenza in the UK. These include cases in backyard flocks and commercial farms. Unfortunately, all the birds at these premises have had to be destroyed.

Nettex Virocur Disinfectant or Virkon S are ideal as they is effective against Avian Influenza and are both DEFRA approved - both of these disinfectants can be purchased from ourselves – eg 1kg tub of Nettex Virocur will make up 100+ litres of disinfectant that will remain effective for maximum of 7 days.

· Keep the ground inside the chicken run dry and clean by putting down fresh Easichick or Woodchip in your chicken run.

· Use Agrisec 250 Plus 2kg or Natures Grub Ground Sanitiser 2.5kg inside your chicken coop to keep it dry and free from bacteria – it is a super absorbent sanitiser DEFRA approved disinfectant powder which will also remove any ammonia build up in the air. Urgent - PLEASE READ

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone has come into force across Great Britain as of 5pm on 3 November 2021.

This means it is a legal requirement for all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures to protect their birds from avian influenza.

For more information see GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-flu , GOV.SCOT: https://www.gov.scot/publications/avian-influenza-outbreaks/ and GOV.WALES: https://gov.wales/avian-influenza-bird-flu-latest-update

To help you all minimise the risk of Avian Flu in your chicken run/pen, cover your run to stop wild birds entering or the run being contaminated by wild bird faeces. If you walk into your run, I would recommend you use Nettex Virocur disinfectant or Virkon S both of which are DEFRA approved and effective against Avian Flu. We stock both of these brands, they are available in 1kg tubs. Use them to disinfect the ground or as a foot bath solution to disinfect your footwear before entering your hen(s) enclosure, ensuring no contaminants from your footwear are taken into the run, and thus spreading the wild bird flu.

Our Story

Southmead Poultry is a bespoke family business/small holding based in a semi-rural setting in Leatherhead, Surrey. We sell a variety of fully vaccinated point of lay hybrid chickens, plus chicken coops/housing, poultry accessories and feed. Plus we run a very popular hen boarding service too.

We have bred and reared birds for over 30 years, which started off as a hobby, we also entered and won a variety of bird shows over many years.

Approximately 10 years ago we decided to use our knowledge and create a business which we love and run with a passion - encouraging others to take up the fantastic hobby of keeping chickens. Chickens make wonderful family pets and companions, they are comical, inquisitive and very sociable, and each has their own individual personality, plus nothing beats the taste of your own home produced egg. It is fantastic feeling being self-sufficient, knowing where your eggs have come from, and that the hens were kept in good conditions.
