People often don't realise how much cpd we have to complete to maintain our professional qualifications.

Many, many hours and £1000's get spent on continued learning in order to bring you the best and most up to date knowledge.

Usually we quietly get on with it and the certificates get filed away...but I had to share this one. I am super proud to be part of this movement to change the lives of dogs and owners. 😊

The Reward Seeking Instinct

Your dog has a 'reward seeking instinct'. Same as we do...it's the 'feel good factor' that we all crave.

If we don’t reward our dogs, they will naturally reward themselves. That’s a given!

For example, have you ever been dragged by your dog over to a patch of grass that they want to sniff?

Or has your dog ever jumped up at someone or stolen something that wasn’t given to them?

All of these things are rewarding behaviours and dogs will practice, repeat and get very good at things that they find rewarding.

FOCUS ON THE GOOD AND THE GOOD GETS BETTER

During positive dog training we use this 'reward seeking instinct' to mould some of the behaviours that we do want from them.

If we make the behaviours we like the ones most rewarding to the dog they will repeat them, they will get good at them, they will enjoy the feeling it gives
them and they will choose to do them.

Reward based, or positive dog training is not just a matter of opinion, it is backed by science.

If we can so easily tap into this 'reward seeking instinct' when training, why would we ever use any other method.

TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR DOG SAFE DURING THE HOT WEATHER ..

We all know that it's unsafe to walk our dogs in extreme heat, so if it's not possible for you to get out for a walk very early or very late, don't worry because there's plenty you can do at home ☺

Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. PADDLING POOL - Buy a kiddies paddling pool, they are as cheap as chips and a great way for your dog to cool off in the garden.

2. TRAINING!! - This is a fantastic opportunity to get that extra practice in. You can work on building duration on existing behaviours, teach some new ones .. you can even practice your recall and loose lead walking in the house! (Assuming your house is nice and cool)

3. STEVE MANN'S RUCKSACK WALK - Try Steve Mann's wonderful rucksack walk. Again you could devise an indoor version and turn it into an adventure!

If you're unfamiliar with it, drop me a line and ask.

4. KONG - Put something yummy in a Kong and freeze it, then give to your dog to enjoy like a dog friendly ice lolly.

5. SNIFFING - Do some sniffing!! Let your dog move from room to room looking for some little treats, pausing for a while with a frozen Lickimat before continuing the hunt.

6. Cool mats, it's worth investing in a couple so that your dog has a selection of cool, shady places to flop down. If you don't have any, a damp towel on the floor can give your dog the option of cooling off.

These are just a few ideas but if you think of anymore share them for the benefit of others in the comments ..

Stay safe in this hot weather 🌞

It is with a heavy heart, we would like you to know .
Cuckavalda Gundogs have had a tragic accident around 4pm yesterday .
A tree blow down taking a powerline of 11k vol with it which fell on the kennel block which electrified the runs. Unfortunately 13 dogs lost their lives.

A full investigation is underway by Northern Power Grid .

Jack and Anna would like to thank everyone who have shown their concern and given help.

And to Grace Lane Vets for coming out .

At this time there is so much to do and things to sort so we ask that you do not telephone .

Grrrrr! So well said, this programme is shocking!

2024 update -

This post was made two years ago and has recently been getting attention again. The sad thing is that actually nothing has changed. This program is still being made. There is ( as far as I know - and very happy to be corrected if I am wrong) no veterinary involvement with these dogs prior to filming.

How many more dogs are going to be labled as awkward, difficult, stubborn or just lazy when actually there is an underlying pain issue?

We have so many wonderful trainers and behaviourists that could fill this man’s shoes and provide far more valuable advice and training. Stop giving people like this man air time… pick someone who actually cares about the wellbeing of the dogs they work with instead of the cash going to line their pockets…

-

Some phrases used on this particular episode of ‘Dogs behaving (very) badly’ where 8 year old Ruby would only get off the sofa if the rug was over the laminate flooring, and would sit down and stop on walks…

‘being a madam’

‘Controlling the diva’

‘Indulging her with rugs’

‘Thinks she’s in charge’

OR

Is this actually a dog in pain, a dog scared of slipping and hurting, a dog trying to tell everyone that she’s uncomfortable?

It’s not indulging her with a rug, it’s making sure her own home is accessible and safe for her. She’s not ‘being a diva’ and refusing to walk, she’s telling you it hurts and she’s uncomfortable.

I’m very glad that the owners realise that this dogs weight is having a significant impact on her life but there are other things that need addressing here. I have no doubt they absolutely adore their girl, that is very clear to see, but I desperately wish they had the right kind of support for Ruby, not just let’s force her to walk and walk on a floor she’s is scared

Dogs Behaving Very Badly and The Dogfather (Graham Hall)… I’m afraid the blame falls to you on this occasion. You have a massive platform with thousands of dog owners watching every episode. How about talking about signs of pain? Indicators of discomfort? When behaviours actually tell us somethings wrong? Ways to adapt houses for older dogs and those that struggle with mobility? You could educate SO MANY owners but no, it doesn’t happen. Instead we just see an uncomfortable dog being forced to walk when she doesn’t want to, and live in an environment that she is scared of.

Dogs need us to advocate for them, to realise when we need to do more and to learn the ways that they tell us something isn’t right. Owner education is the key to this and this could have been a brilliant opportunity to do just that.
