Your pet has diabetes. Now what?

To manage diabetes, you need to either maintain your dog’s healthy diet or switch to one. You need to give insulin injections once or twice a day. And you need to closely collaborate with us, your vet.

Having your pet diagnosed with diabetes can be a shock: diabetes requires careful, lifelong management that the owner – and indeed the whole family – needs to adjust to. Injecting your pet with insulin can also feel scary if you’ve never done it before, but your veterinarian can guide you through the process.

How often you need to inject your pet depends on the type of insulin they receive and the vets advice. The fewer times insulin injections are necessary, the easier it is to adjust to the treatment routine – both in the beginning and in the long run.

Your daily reminder to check your pets dew claws 🐶🐱
They are located on the inside of their front legs, just up from their paws. Dew claws generally don't touch the ground, so they aren't worn down during a pets regular exercise.

A**l gland issues in dogs can arise from several causes, and understanding these can help prevent and manage the condition more effectively.

Common Causes of A**l Gland Problems:

1. Obesity: Overweight dogs are more prone to a**l gland issues because excess body fat can affect the gland’s ability to empty naturally. The pressure required for the glands to express during defecation is reduced, leading to retention and impaction.
2. Poor Diet: A diet low in fiber can result in soft stools, which do not provide enough pressure on the a**l glands to trigger natural expression. Dogs fed a poor-quality diet or one that lacks sufficient fiber are at a higher risk.
3. Chronic Diarrhea or Loose Stools: When a dog frequently has loose stools or diarrhea, the a**l glands are not properly expressed during defecation. This can cause the glands to become impacted or infected over time.
4. Allergies: Dogs with food allergies or environmental allergies often experience inflammation, which can extend to the a**l glands. The inflammation can lead to blockages or infections if untreated.
5. Structural Issues: Some dogs are anatomically predisposed to a**l gland problems due to the positioning or size of their glands, making them harder to empty naturally. This is common in small breeds like Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, and Toy Poodles.
6. Lack of Exercise: Dogs who are less active may have weaker muscle tone, which can impact their bowel movements and the natural expression of their glands. Active dogs tend to have firmer stools, which help in expressing the glands.
7. Infections or Tumors: In rare cases, infections in the glands or nearby areas, or the presence of tumors, can cause blockages. A bacterial infection may result in painful abscesses or even ruptures.

By addressing these underlying causes—through a balanced, high-fiber diet, regular exercise, and managing allergies—most a**l gland problems can be prevented or managed effectively.

☠️A word of caution to finish the week!☠️

Please share with your pet-loving eco friends

Grateful Bosco said goodbye to his buddy Shania this afternoon after a difficult night in hospital. This adventurous lad was in dire straits yesterday when he collapsed suddenly in the yard. By the time he arrived at the clinic Bosco was tremoring uncontrollably and had lost all control of his motor function.

Immediately our quick thinking vets asked if by any chance he would have eaten mouldy bread. As it happened his owner had just noticed the brown bin scattered over the drive before he left. A very typical scenario for a lesser diagnosed problem - MYCOTOXICOSIS!!! 🍄 🍄‍🟫🍄

The toxins contained in mouldy food can cause serious and often fatal neurological signs. We immediately induced Bosco to regurgitate his stomach contents which contained the largest amount of foul smelling waste you could imagine! Almost immediately he started to feel better and after a night of fluids he was able to go home none the worse for his afternoon feed.

So whilst we are mega supporters of reduce, reuse and recycle, it’s a good idea to keep your brown bin waste up and out of reach of your pets. Next time we might not be so lucky😱😱😱😱.

Are you aware of blue-green algae?

What you need to know:

⚠️ Blue-green algae are tiny bacteria found in still, nutrient-rich water.

⚠️ They produce toxins harmful to dogs; about half of exposed dogs die.

⚠️ Most poisonings occur from drinking or swimming in freshwater lakes and ponds.
Symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tremors, and seizures can appear within an hour.

⚠️ Prevent poisoning by avoiding risky areas, checking algae warnings, and rinsing dogs after swimming.
