The emergence of Arrowfield Veterinary Practice Ltd occured in September 2013. With the planned phased retirement of Arrowfield Veterinary Group's sole owner John Dennis, two of the long standing employed Vets, Paul Buckingham & Wendy Phillips took the opportunity to buy out the practice under an employee owned business model more familiarly associated with the John Lewis Partnership. We are proud

to be the first veterinary practice to have adopted employee ownership as a means of business succession. Our structure values and encourages full employee participation in the day to day running of the practice and rewards the loyalty and professionalism of our whole team. For us, employee ownership means a shared responsibility and commitment to the animals entrusted to our care and to the service we provide for our clients, both owners and farm businesses alike; 'Healthy animals and Happy clients'.

Angela Jauncey ❤️

Very sadly, our loyal receptionist and friend Angela has recently passed away.
Her funeral will be held on Monday 18th December 2023. In order to allow staff members to attend the service and pay their respects, we will be running a reduced service.

Please bear with us during this period, as we will need to triage and prioritise urgent and emergency treatment. Our Presteigne branch will be closed until 2pm.

Angela will forever be remembered by us as a stalwart member of the team and a friend to many. Her determination to continue to work alongside us, and to live life normally throughout her illness has been an inspiration to us all.

Rest in peace

CRASH ✨️ 1️⃣ whole year ✨️

Today marks the 1 year anniversary that 'Crash' had surgery and became a bionic dog! 🦿

He's gone from strength to strength in that time. He has a big sister 'Bindy' and even has his own sheep to look after! 🐑

None of us could of wished for a better ending for this lovely boy 💗

We are forever thankful for the kindness and support from everyone and a special shout out to MSM Vets for helping us to give him a chance.

Below is a little collection of his antics in the last year 🐕❤️💕

🐕 XL BULLY LEGISLATION 🐕

We are not here to start a debate, our priority is the dogs and supporting owners through these changes.
We'd appreciate no inappropriate or negative comments.

IN SUMMARY

From 31st December 2023 it is illegal to transfer ownership of an XL Bully to another person, by selling, giving away, gifting etc. From this date all XL Bullies must be muzzled and on a lead in public.

From 1st February 2024 it is illegal to own an XL BULLY in England and Wales. Owners have two options

1. Apply for a Certificate of Exemption
2. Euthanasia

CERTIFICATE OF EXEMPTION

The owner must apply for this by 31st January 2024. Online via the Gov.uk website. The fee is £92

The dog must be:
● covered by third party liability insurance
● neutered
● microchipped
● kept on lead and muzzled at all times in public
● kept in a secure place where they cannot escape

NEUTERING

For dogs over 1 year old on 31st December 2023, they must be neutered by 30th June 2024. For dogs under 1 year old on 31st December 2023, they must be neutered by 31st December 2024.

EUTHANASIA

This must be carried out by a vet, before 1st February 2024.

We are here to advise and support owners through this new legislation. If you think your dog is of 'type' and need help, please do not hesitate to contact us.

🥳 💸CHARITY DONATIONS 🥳💸

📧 Last year we moved to using email correspondence as much as possible to reduce our carbon footprint as well as to reduce postage and administrative costs 🦶

We promised our clients that we would donate a percentage of the savings made during the first 12 months to local charities.

Following a staff vote, we are pleased to say that Hereford & Worcester Animal Rescue and Midlands Air Ambulance will each receive a £300 donation 😁

Bonfire Night 🎆 is fast approaching and unfortunately this can be a frightening time 💥 for many of our furry friends 🐕🐈🐇🦔

So lets plan ahead:
💥 Pheromone diffusers or collars release naturally occurring cat (Feliway) and dog (Adaptil) 'comforting messages' to help your pet feel safe and secure in their environment- Give us a call to have a chat with one of our vets or nurses about the pheromone, aroma-therapy and calming nutritional supplements we offer. In some cases a vet consultation may be required to discuss your pets behaviour and ways to help.
💥 In the long term your dog can learn to be less afraid of loud noises. With proper training this is possible so that the next fireworks season will be less stressful for you and your dog- We recommend 'Sounds Scary', a free easy-to-follow therapy pack for dogs from the Dogs Trust which includes a specially made set of sound recordings and an easy-to-follow guide to help desensitise your dog to loud noises.
💥 Have your pets microchipped in case they
escape – by law, your dog should already be microchipped.

On the day:
🐾 Walk your dog during daylight hours to avoid times when fireworks are likely to be set off
🐾 Close windows and curtains to muffle the sounds
🐾 Put on some music or the TV to mask the firework noises
🐾 Create a quiet space/ hiding place where your dog or cat can feel in safe and in control 🐾 Make sure your cat or dog is always kept in a secure environment and can’t escape if there’s a sudden noise.
🐾 Ignore the firework noises yourself and provide toys, food distractions and company for your pet

☎️ If you require any further advice or would like to discuss pheromones or medications for your pet then please contact the practice!

🎆🎇 Enjoy your evening and stay safe! 💚

🌟 🐕❤️ FAT FREE FRIDAY 🌟🐕❤️

Meet Coco the Beagle.
In September 2022, she came to see vet Ariane weighing a whopping 21.6kgs!

Ariane referred her to nurse Beth to begin a weight management programme.

Together, Coco's owners and Beth worked out a diet and exercise programme. Her dedicated owners brought her to see Beth every 2 weeks where she was weighed and her programme adapted to her individual needs.

Here she is this week, after reaching her target weight, weighing 11.6 kgs!! An incredible 10kg weight loss!!!!

📣 NO NEGATIVE COMMENTS REGARDING WEIGHT!!📣 Coco's owners have worked tirelessly for her weight loss and it wouldn't have been possible without their compliance and dedication! 😁

If you need help with a weight management programme for your dog, then please contact the practice for a nurse weight clinic. There is no charge for the clinic, you only pay for the food.👩🏻‍⚕️

We wish Coco the best for her 'Skinny' future. Her chances of heart disease, diabetes and arthritis have all been reduced massively 🥳

Beth will continue to see and support Coco and her owners with her maintenance routine 🐕❤️

In light of our recent Facebook post, we would like to clarify a few things...

Firstly, the post was to make clients aware of new legislation. Instead, it's been used for vet bashing and unkind statements that are simply not true. Animal Welfare is ALWAYS our priority.

The guidance has been brought into force by the RCVS, the regulatory body for the WHOLE veterinary profession in the UK. NOT us here at AVP, but the RCVS. That's why the relevant links were added to the post.

The guidance regarding longterm prescriptions (i.e heart conditions, skin allergies, epilepsy, arthritis etc) is UNCHANGED.
The new guidance affects antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and antiparasiticides.
On the whole, you will see minimal changes to our prescribing procedures with the exception of antiparasiticides (worm and flea treatments). In short, the new guidance is going to affect animals CHANGING treatment type or CHANGING to a different size of these products (usually from losing or gaining weight).
As a team, we will guide our clients through this situation if and when it arises.

The RCVS have given us until January 2024 to implement these changes, so we don't face disciplinary action.

To our clients that have been understanding and accomodating whilst we adapt to this new guidance, thank you. It is appreciated.

Any abuse directed at our staff WILL NOT be tolerated and you will be asked to obtain veterinary treatment elsewhere.

We hope this clarifies any confusion.

Many thanks
Team AVP

26/09/2023

📢 IMPORTANT NOTICE 📢

From 1st September, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS, regulatory body for the veterinary profession in the UK) introduced guidance on prescribing prescription-only medicines. The full guidance can be found on:
https://www.rcvs.org.uk/setting-standards/advice-and-guidance/under-care-new-guidance/

The new guidance requires that a physical examination of the pet has to be performed every time any antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and antiparasiticides are prescribed. This includes topical preparations such as ear and eye drops and all prescription flea/worm/tick products.

The guidance is an important step towards ensuring responsible antimicrobial use and reducing the veterinary impact on the wider issues of global antibiotic resistance and decline of insect populations.

What this means in practice is that your pet will need to come in for an in-person consultation every time:
- we need to prescribe medication for an ear infection (as most contain antibiotics)
- we need to prescribe antibiotics for any skin problem, even if it’s a chronic problem
- we/you decide to change from one flea/worm/tick product to another
- we suspect a urinary tract infection (remote/online consultation and urine analysis/culture are no longer sufficient)
- we suspect a gastrointestinal infection (remote/online consultation and faecal analysis/culture are no longer sufficient)

We also can no longer prescribe prescription deworming products on the basis of a laboratory report alone, we will need to see the pet for a consultation and physical examination first.

For long term prescription medication that is not an antimicrobial/antiparasitic, our usual policy of requiring an examination every 6 months (or every 3 months in some less stable or more serious cases) continues to apply.

The consultations are charged at our usual fee depending on whether it’s an initial consultation or one for a recurring problem.

If you have any questions or concerns about the new guidance, RCVS can be contacted on:
020 7202 0789 or [email protected].
