In light of our recent Facebook post, we would like to clarify a few things...
Firstly, the post was to make clients aware of new legislation. Instead, it's been used for vet bashing and unkind statements that are simply not true. Animal Welfare is ALWAYS our priority.
The guidance has been brought into force by the RCVS, the regulatory body for the WHOLE veterinary profession in the UK. NOT us here at AVP, but the RCVS. That's why the relevant links were added to the post.
The guidance regarding longterm prescriptions (i.e heart conditions, skin allergies, epilepsy, arthritis etc) is UNCHANGED.
The new guidance affects antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and antiparasiticides.
On the whole, you will see minimal changes to our prescribing procedures with the exception of antiparasiticides (worm and flea treatments). In short, the new guidance is going to affect animals CHANGING treatment type or CHANGING to a different size of these products (usually from losing or gaining weight).
As a team, we will guide our clients through this situation if and when it arises.
The RCVS have given us until January 2024 to implement these changes, so we don't face disciplinary action.
To our clients that have been understanding and accomodating whilst we adapt to this new guidance, thank you. It is appreciated.
Any abuse directed at our staff WILL NOT be tolerated and you will be asked to obtain veterinary treatment elsewhere.
We hope this clarifies any confusion.
Many thanks
Team AVP
