🌾 Grass Seeds 🌾
Grass seeds are more prevalent during the summer months. These dry tiny grass seeds can cause all manner of problems for your pet.
In the last few weeks we have seen a number of dogs being admitted to have grass seeds removed from their paws, ears and eyes. Seeds can also track in to other places like nasal passages.
If your dog starts shaking their head, sneezing or having discharge from the nose, licking their paws or has discharge or squinting of the eye then it could be a grass seed. If you are worried then please phone us to make an appointment.
How to prevent grass seed injury and problems
🌾 Try to avoid walking your dog in areas where there are long, flowering grasses during the summer months.
🌾 Some breeds can be susceptible due to their long coats. Dogs that have a lot of feathering between their toes, for example cocker spaniels, golden retrievers, springer spaniels etc. You can help your dog by clipping their coats as short as possible, including hair between toes and around ears.
🌾 After your walk, check your dog over thoroughly, especially between the toes and in their ears. You can often spot a grass seed lurking before it starts to embed itself into the skin of your dog.
We currently have an elderly female tabby cat in our care. No microchip, found in Dorset Avenue in Great Baddow. Please contact us on 01245 353741 if you think this could be your cat. We will require photographic evidence as proof of ownership.
🐈⬛ 🖤Happy Black Cat Appreciation Day! 🖤🐈⬛
Today we are celebrating our little black feline friends.
Did you know that black cats are actually the hardest colour to home from rescue centres?
Through no fault of their own, black cats are overlooked time and time again, as most people tend to choose ‘prettier' coloured cats. Even black kittens are left until last for adoption, while their more colourful siblings are chosen first.
Make sure to show us how your black cats are celebrating their day in the comments below.

🐈 Meet wonderful Woody! 🐈⬛
This 13-year-old chap was hit by a car and was rushed in bleeding from his face. He was found to have broken teeth, a fractured jaw, and some (thankfully less serious) soft tissue injuries.
Once he had been treated for shock, the next stage was to remove his broken canine teeth and reconstruct his jaw. Tiny holes were drilled in the remaining bone and a strong suture implant was placed to hold the pieces together so they could heal. This was secured under his chin and left in place for 6 weeks.
A feeding tube was also placed to allow us to give medication and liquid food without having to disturb Woody’s sore face, but he soon decided to eat, and this was removed.
He is a firm favourite with all the staff, always ready for a fuss and head scritches, even when he was very poorly. He clearly doesn’t feel his age and is still looking to get into mischief. 🥰 🐾
Woody has now been signed off completely, and clearly thinks all this fuss about a “Pet Bravery Award” is a bit much!
❗️Heybridge - phone line issues❗️
Our Heybridge branch is currently experiencing a problem with incoming calls. If urgent/emergency then please come to the practice. Heybridge is open until 7pm today.
Our network provider is working on this now to resolve the situations as soon as possible. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

🐶 Heat stress in pets 🐱
Heat stress starts as a reversible condition, but if not managed it will develop to heat stroke, which is extremely dangerous.
If your pet shows any of these signs, they should be moved to a cool area and offered plenty of water to drink.

🐶 Why is Hot weather dangerous for Pets! 🐱
Unlike us, pets have no understanding that hot weather can be harmful. We control their environment, their access to water and their exercise, and they can’t speak up if they start feeling unwell.
Heat stroke can rapidly progress and, even with veterinary treatment, is often fatal.

🐕🦺 Supporting Hearing Dogs for Deaf People 🦮
Deafness is rising in the UK; by 2035, it is estimated that one in five British people (over 15 million) will experience hearing loss.
Deafness can be a very isolating disability, so a hearing dog offers constant companionship and emotional support, giving deaf people the confidence to reconnect with their family, friends and community around them. This combination of practical assistance and lifelong friendship can be completely life- changing.
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a national charity that trains dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds like the smoke alarm, alarm clock and even a baby’s cry. Their burgundy coats also act as a visual reminder to the public when they are out and about that their partner is deaf.
Just a small donation can make a big difference!
We have had a male entire cat brought into us. Not chipped. Found Beehive Lane/Tile Kiln area
Distinctive facial markings. Photographic evidence will be required

Handsome Oreo was in recently for a castrate and saw our nurse last week for a post-operative check. He was super relaxed in the consult room, rolling around on the floor and generally being adorable! Such a chilled out boy 😍

🐶 Puppy parties - week 2 🐶
We had a mix of new and old faces at yesterday's puppy party. Nova and Daisy seem to have grown so much in just one week! We met 3 more beautiful puppies: Bear, Otis and Rosie. Bear and Daisy spent a few minutes cuddled up on our PCA Rachel's lap, so sweet 🥰 (Otis tried to join but there was no room!) 😍
If you're looking to bond your rabbits, we have some helpful tips 🐰 💕🐰:
🐇 Ensure your rabbits' living spaces are near to each other but do not physically put them in the same hutch/run to start with. Make sure each rabbit has plenty of hiding spots if they want some privacy.
🐇 Help them get used to each other's scents by swapping some hay or a towel with their scent.
🐇 When they're ready, let them hang out together for short periods in a neutral area whilst being supervised. Don’t stress if they chase or nip a little. If things start to get too intense then separate them and try again later.
🐇 Continue to let them spend time together gradually, and introduce toys as they get more comfortable.
More helpful tips and information can be found over at https://rabbitawarenessactiongroup.co.uk/rabbit-welfare/companionship/ 💓 🐰

🐶 Today is World Diabetes Day 🐱 💉 You’ve heard of diabetes in humans, but did you know that it can affect our pets too? Diabetes occurs when there are abnormally high sugar levels in the blood, caused by a problem with insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that works to move sugar out of the bloodstream and into cells after a meal. Signs to look out for include: 💦 Increase thirst and urinating Increased hunger, animals may even start to beg for food or raid the bins. (Despite an increased appetite, weight loss is commonly seen). Your pet may start to vomit more regularly, and become more inactive and have sweet-smelling breath. To find more about diabetes in pets go to: https://bit.ly/2Tqx0DJ If you are concerned at all about your pet’s health, then make an appointment with our lovely team of vets.
Love of animals is a universal impulse, a common ground on which all of us may meet. By loving and understanding animals, perhaps we humans shall come to understand each other.” – Louis J Comuti On World Kindness Day, let’s take a leaf out of our much loved pets’ book and think about how to we can be kinder to ourselves and others 💕.

❤️💜 Remembrance Day ❤️💜 Lest we forget 😪. Today we take a moment to stop and remember all of the tremendously brave men, women and animals whom have fought in the line of duty. Many animals have served in the War for communication, transporting of ammunition, water and medical supplies to the front and also companionship raising morale and providing comfort during the hardship of war.
🔥 Bonfire night 🔥 💥 Never set off fireworks near livestock 🐑🐄 as frightened animals - especially horses 🐴- can seriously injure themselves when frightened. 💥 Remember, fireworks can also disturb wildlife so steer clear of known habitats like lakes with waterfowl 🦢 🦆 and trees with roosting birds 🦉. 🔥 Check bonfires for wildlife before lighting, as animals like hedgehogs 🦔 may be hibernating.
Our lovely nurses have put together this very informative firework season display board in our Galleywood Branch.
Firework Tip - Keeping windows and external doors shut during fireworks will stop your pet escaping and reduce the noise. Also make sure that your garden is escape proof - so get checking those fence panels and hedges.
👻🖤 Happy Halloween! 🖤🎃 We hope you and your pets have a spook-tacular day – what are you and your pets up to tonight? We’d love to see some photos of you and your pets enjoying the spooky season.
