South West Hound Club

21st April 2025

I would like to thank the South West Hound Club for their warm welcome and kindness on the day and also for the invitation to judge Rhodesian Ridgebacks. I would also like to say that this has been one of the hardest shows I have ever judged. The quality of the dogs presented to me was superb and all classes came down to splitting hairs. All the dogs had points important to me and the future of the breed, good length and depth of muzzle, good deep chests, good front fill and assembly, clean tucks, adequate length of loin and shown in fit and healthy condition. P (1) 1 Hurns, Kwanza El Faiyum At Matikiridge (20/07/2024) A lovely young dog presented to me in superb condition, masculine but showing no coarseness. True ridgeback head, good ear set, large dark eye and defined stop. Good length and depth of muzzle and perfect bite. Nice clean length of neck showing no throatiness leading onto a good strong lay of shoulder and front assembly. Good length of loin and perfect ridge. Nice croup and tail set and even at this young age showing good core strength holding his topline on the stack as on the move. A super front on this dog, nice deep chest with plenty of heart and lung room and defined tuck. Good bone for his size and frame which nicely filled the eye. Still obviously a baby but full of promise, moved well straight and back with ease and covered the ground well. Delighted to present him with Best Puppy. OD (2) 1 Hurns, Ch Diamondridge Dark Delight of Matikiridge (28.07.2019) An impressive dog again full of masculinity and presence shown in fit, good condition. Classic Ridgeback head, good ear set, length and depth of muzzle and perfect bite. Again, clean through the neck, lovely lay of shoulder and good forefront and fill. Lovely deep chest, ample room for heart and lungs and good tuck. Perfect ridge with well held topline. Strong quarters and good first and second thigh. Moved strong and effortlessly around the ring showing himself beautifully. Nicely balanced throughout and well deserving of his placing today. 2 Raymonds Sofalas Raffaello (AI) JW (09.06.23) Another lovely dog, smaller than first but taking nothing away from his quality and type. Kind masculine head, lovely large eye, good ear set, nice length and depth of muzzle and perfect bite. Good length of neck, nice lay of shoulder and good forechest. Another nice deep chest and tuck, super first and second thigh and good feet. Good strong topline with a perfect ridge and good length of loin. A lovely dog showing quality and type, just a little worried on the day and maybe shown outside would have been a different dog but still highly deserving of his placing today. OB (2) 1 Barnes and Barnes, Ch Diamondridge Kazembe Golden Age JW (17.06.22) This bitch has absolutely everything that I am looking for and just says to me Rhodesian Ridgeback. A real bitch of quality excelling in type and construction. Feminine head, large round eye and lovely length and depth of muzzle with clean bite. Excellent front assembly, plenty of heart and lung room with good front fill. Strong topline with excellent ridge and again excellent rear assembly with strong first and second thigh and well let down hocks. Moved out strong and true with purpose showing excellent drive. Lovely height/length proportions and good bone. An excellent example of the breed and delighted to award her 1st Bitch and Best Of Breed. 2 Smith, Ungowa Here You Come Again JW (16.10.22) Another lovely bitch, more short coupled than first but again a quality bitch. Pretty feminine head, large round eye and good muzzle showing length and depth and clean bite. Lovely front assembly on this bitch with plenty of fill, deep chest and clean tuck. Again, good strong quarters with excellent first and second thigh. Good clean ridge and strong topline. Again, moved out strong and true with plenty of drive and excellent feet. A beautiful bitch deserving her second place standing in excellent company later to be awarded Reserve Best Of Breed.

Today I didnt feel she was as happy in the ring which meant she didnt show her free flowing movement. O (3/1) 1 Smarts Gezancol Kissed By an Angel - black and silver bitch 5 years old. Beautifully presented and handled. Initially she was not as happy on the move but once settled she came into her own. Beautiful feminine head and eye with a long neck. Excellent head and eye, long neck into excellent front and rear angulation. Level top line and ringed tail. Moved well. Unlucky to meet 1.
