I've been training my own dogs formally for the past 21 years. I have fostered dogs for a local animal rescue and helped to prepare them for their new homes ironing out any behaviour problems. I have children of my own and experience of introducing both established dogs to babies

and new dogs to the family setting. I have studied canine psychology with the Animal Care College and strive each year further my studies to keep up to date with current methods.

We also offer private 1-2-1 hoopers sessions. A great way to have fun , exercise your dog and enhance your relationship. Hoopers is suitable for all people and most dogs . Here Shug shows us that that being deaf is no barrier to having fun doing hoopers.

Pawesome Dog training established 11 years ago and still love the job I do helping owners build fantastic relationships with their dogs.

A little wet (only light rain last night) a good opportunity to create positive associations with jacket wearing and people wearing big coats and hoods up .

We also played recall games with most pups playing those games off lead .
Nothing like real life setting to train real life skills ❤️

Puppy part 2 will start shortly then over winter we will continue with adventures out to different places to generalise the foundation skills that we have been learning in class.

Email notes and videos went out last night with the link to book on to part 2 🐾

Fudge started drop training as soon as she came home. As she’s a cocker spaniel genetically we knew she’d be more likely to pick everything up in her mouth. The job they are bred to do who wants a working cocker that drops a bird half way back so they also want to keep hold of items .
Now this was a guess on our part determined by her genetics . But even with this Fudge is one of those pups who has this in spades and despite this has given us some scares.
But it’s really important we continue with her training and that we don’t immediately sn**ch things away from her as this will ultimately make her worse and destroy our recall training.
So we pick our battles today on her outing she picked up this pine cone (it’s big enough she’s not in immediate danger of swallowing it ) so we consolidate our drop training . And she loses interest quickly in it ❤️🐾

One of the rewards we use in our training is food and we can use quite a lot of it in the beginning .

We show you how to progress and stretch out the gaps between the rewards.
The timescale for this is dog and distraction dependent . Here Fudge is working for longer between rewards (there’s 5 weeks between these videos )
And she doesn’t always work for long periods for her reward we mix it up

At 12 weeks old this is Fudge’s first high street walk.
A bit distracted by her favourite person behind the camera so a bit of a change of filming angle.

There’s lots of foundations you can do prior to lead walking training that helps set the puppy up for success.
Don’t wait until you have a struggle

The whole session start to picking her up was no more than 2 minutes .
Planned short sessions set pups up for success and promote the good behaviours we would like them to have

Disney enjoyed her hoopers private lesson today despite it being a little damp

Puppies are not clean slates !
You often hear people say 'get a puppy they are a clean slate'

As a behaviourist and breeder I can confidently tell you this is not true. Both nature and nurture has a huge impact.
A puppy will inherit genes from its parents and these genes will impact the puppies genetic potential to behave in a particular way.
Such as :
Using aggression as a strategy to deal with difficult situations
Sociability towards people and dogs
Fearful responses
Sound sensitivity
Strong instinctive behaviour to hunt, chase, grab, hold and guard.
Trainability which includes the ability to learn self control as humans desire it.

When people breed dogs they sometimes select for specific traits and sometimes not. If someone is breeding for a particular look, colour or just money then these traits can become altered becoming stronger or weaker or unbalanced. This can make a dog dangerous for example breeding a dog with gameness and reducing human sociability.

Then the puppy is born and the first 8 weeks learning with the breeder will have an huge impact on the development of all these genetic traits.

My five puppies have all come from the same parents and been reared in the same environment. They have very individual personalities. The training and socialisation they receive in their new homes will only influence the genes and first learning, it won't change their personalities.

So if you are looking for a puppy
Firstly learn about breed traits and instincts and make sure you pick a puppy that will suit your lifestyle. For example there no point getting a breed that is 'aloof with strangers' if you have 3 young children and lots of friends visiting.

Secondly meet the parents or (genes), see what they are like. Make sure you are meeting the actual parents, some people buy in puppy farmed litters and then 'hire' an adult of the same breed to pretend the puppies were bred there!!

Thirdly make sure the puppy has had plenty of early neurological stimulation and learning before it leaves the litter. Ask these questions.
1) What have the puppies seen?
2) Who and what have they met?
2) What have they learnt?
3) How have they learned to play?
4) What do they do if they get frustrated?
5) What do they do if they get bored?

A professional trainer can help support and guide you on the process of looking for a puppy. Don't wait till afterwards for help.

Prevention IS better than Cure. This goes for training and socialisation too, get a professional to help and guide you.

Puppies are building neural pathways with every experience, every day, make sure they're building ones you like.

First Learning is the strongest, make sure you get it right first time.

Read what some of our past attendees have to say about our puppy class

Lyndsay Garrett-
"Albie has progressed so much on this puppy handler course. The course was great not only in session, but also all of the out of session material that Mel sent through. There was Always chance for questions and queries to be answered. Really fantastic. Thank you so much Mel for your time and patience "

James Trythall -
"Chance loved every single lesson, everything we was showed has done Chance a world of good. Melanie is excellent! And we recommend her to anyone that has dogs!
Thank you very much! Keep up the good work!!!"

Sarah Po***ck -
"We first met Mel at her puppy training classes when with our baby Border Terrier. She encouraged the family to attend classes with the puppy, so that everyone understands what’s going on and this makes it easier for puppy (and for us!). Personally I think Mel is a bit of a dog whisperer, her knowledge and understanding of dogs is very impressive and her training methods make use of this. She was able to quickly see how my interactions with our puppy worked or didn’t work, and she was quickly able to offer solutions so that my dog could understand what I was trying to get him to do.

The great thing about Mel is that she is also exceptionally good at understanding people as well as dogs, and so never made me feel daft but simply adapted her tuition so I would be able to understand. Our dog (and us) loved going to her classes and we learned so much. I only wish my work schedule had allowed me to go to more of her adult dog classes as they are equally good"

We’ve a lot of dogs and their owners who started puppy class with us and are still training with us with their now adult dogs ❤️ This is what Leigh has to say about our puppy classes

“Puppy classes with Mel were a great way to start a foundation of trust and learning in a safe environment for Ted when he was just 8 weeks old. He learned from the very beginning the expectations we had from him and we were able to channel his excitability into fun and rewarding behaviour for both of us.

Mel was invaluable during this time and gave lots of advice and training to make the land shark phase a fun experience for everyone!

Three years later and he still loves his training and has matured into a loving and goofy big lad”
