Dealing with space invaders. The dog sort not the alien sort. How should we and can we deal with it?
There is definitely a trend at the moment of trainers and larger dog accounts posting up videos of them shouting (abuse at times) towards the owners about getting control of the dog, shouldn’t be off the lead etc etc. Now before anyone comes for me…no I don’t think this is appropriate, dogs shouldn’t running to other dogs space uninvited, friendly or not. But I saw a video the other day of a trainer/walker with their group in a down and another dog calmly approaching, perfectly socially appropriate, no poor body language and when it wasn’t welcomed in it stopped and in my opinion only stayed - at a safe distance - because the person with the pack of dogs was shouting and hollering abuse at the dogs owner. Then the dogs which were apparently under threat from this perfectly calm, socially appropriate dog actually charged it 🤦🏼♀️ - which apparently was fine 🤷🏼♀️
My point being - have we taken this a step too far now? No dogs shouldn’t be coming in hot unwanted, but can’t we deal with it with some calm? Help the person whose dog is causing the problem rather than going for click baiting slanging matches for social media views? Not turn the whole thing in to an even more stressful situation for any and all involved?
Am I the only one who just deals with this as quick as possible and moves on? At the most I’ll offer some explanation and help to the owner when this happens in my sessions. And tbh if we take our dogs to places where others are off lead we have to expect acceptable social interactions, that shouldn’t be a problem. Unacceptable ones fine, but when its now a crime for a dog to be anything other than almost robotically neutral have we gone a bit too far?

If you have a Terrier with really high prey drive then you will need to build some solid self control skills to help you manage it.
Where most people go wrong is not building enough drive for a toy (or food potentially) to replicate real life and so the training never really hits hard enough to work around real life distractions.
So my top tip is to always spend the majority of your time on motivation, fun and drive for the game NOT on the self control part. Then when you do ask for the self control you are training a real life skill - not just a party trick.

If you have a Terrier (especially a Border) you’ll know this sound. While Terriers are often higher up on the arousal and emotion scale than other breeds - they also vocalise more easily. It’s built in after all. It’s how they alert to prey, it’s how we found them underground. This is the song of their people. And mine aren’t any different when they are excited!
The thing to remember is that expectation = emotion. Maybe positive like here, they want to get out to go play barn hunt. Elvis is using every fibre of his self control to stay put and he’s letting me know about it!
It might be negative, like the expectation of a dog running up to them unwanted creating fear and aggression.
Either way - the easiest way to change the emotion is to build a new expectation.
