Alnorthumbria Farm Vets Our experienced team aim to provide a personal service that you know and trust to work in partnership

The staff at Alnorthumbria vets aim to provide an exemplary service to all our farm clients. We have divided our practice geographically (dedicated farm vets are located at Wooler, Alnwick, Rothbury and Ponteland) in order to service our clients from the nearest surgery wherever possible with experienced, motivated vets and support staff. At our Wagonway Road surgery in Alnwick, the large animal t

reatment rooms allow hospitalisation, treatment and surgery on calves, sheep and pigs. Each of our farm vets cars is fully stocked to deal with all emergencies. Ultrasound scanners are available at each of our surgeries for on farm pregnancy testing. Bull semen testing is a relatively new procedure and is also available from all our surgeries. We now have two tipping crushes in the practice for use on cattle. These enable bulls and cows to be safely and efficiently tipped onto their sides to allow procedures, typically foot trimming, to be carried out. A full range of veterinary products are available from our surgeries at competitive prices. Our large animal team are experienced and enthusiastic, providing farm services from foot trimming to herd and flock health planning. We aim to provide a personal service with a stable staff base that you know and trust to work in partnership with your farm enterprise.

Yesterday Pam ran our popular lambing course where 20 attendees enjoyed a morning of informative presentations and then spent the afternoon on a neighbouring farm learning about castrating, tail docking, stomach tubing and injecting lambs, and had the chance to help with some live lambing!

A big thank you to everyone in the lambing shed who were happy for the group to get involved and for hosting us and thank you to our Surrey Vet students Elise and Abbie for helping out alongside Daisy and Becca in the afternoon.

We had a waiting list this year due to high demand so please email [email protected] if you are interested in further courses and we can look at putting on some more courses soon ๐Ÿ‘

SCHMALLENBERG IN LAMBING FLOCKS AND SPRING CALVING HERDS โ€“ Pam Brown

SRUC laboratories have recently confirmed abortion and / or the birth of deformed lambs in several early lambing flocks due to Schmallenberg virus (SBV) across the southern half of Scotland, including Dumfries & Galloway and Stirlingshire. A very large outbreak of disease has also been confirmed in Ayrshire, in a flock which would have been tupping ewes at the end of July into August. In this large outbreak the clinical signs were not always the โ€œtypicalโ€ malformations associated with SBV infection with lambs that appeared to have weak limbs and possibly also a lack of suck reflex or other neurological signs.

Mild weather continued into November resulting in a possibility that midges were flying and biting sheep late into the season. The situation will become clearer once more flocks start lambing. SBV infection could therefore also affect calving in 2025. SBV associated malformations can occur when infection occurs between day 28-56 of pregnancy in sheep and day 80-150 in cattle.

What to do?
Nothing can be done now to prevent issues caused by SBV at an earlier stage of gestation. However, please consider SBV as a differential when investigating foetal deformities and barren cow or ewe problems. SBV serology (bloods) can be added to screens of these animals, however, have it in mind that there is evidence that SBV antibody can persist for 6 years in cattle and 4 in sheep, so positive serology is not necessarily indicative of recent infection.

The typical pathology associated with SBV includes scoliosis (curved spine), arthrogryposis (fused joints) and kyphosis (hunched back), as well as brain deformities.

Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep ๐Ÿ‘

The Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep (SCOPS) group is exploring a method that could provide you with valuable information on the worm species present in dung samples.

The project, funded by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), aims to look at a simpler, potentially cheaper method than is currently available.
SCOPS urges all sheep famers, vets and advisers to have their say and complete a short survey.

Take this survey powered by surveymonkey.com. Create your own surveys for free.

๐Ÿšจ Extension to Avian Influenza Prevention Zone ๐Ÿšจ

From midday on 18th January (Northern Ireland) and 25th January (England and Scotland), it became a legal requirement for all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks from the threat of avian flu.

Further details can be found here (England), here (Scotland), and here (Northern Ireland).

These restrictions do not currently affect Wales; up to date information can be found here (Wales).

Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) measures apply to all bird keepers whether they have pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard flock and are essential to protecting flocks from avian influenza.

We are now stocking NoBACZ Navel. In the largest-ever navel protection study, NoBACZ Navel showed a 21% reduction in lamb mortality compared to iodine-treated groups, plus lambs were heavier at 8 weeks.

It is faster drying than iodine, has a durable barrier, and lick-resistant properties and 2 hours after application, it forms a powerful shield that stays put so no reapplications are needed.

Please speak to us if you would like to try it this season in your herd or flock ๐Ÿ„ ๐Ÿ‘
