Anyone wanting to sample sheep for sheep scab either routinely or if you have sheep showing clinical signs of fleece loss or itching please contact us to arrange a visit. The test involves taking blood samples from 12 sheep and gives us time to treat where necessary before lambing gets underway.
This video shows the sheep scab mite Psoroptes Ovis crawling about under the microscope ๐
Lungworm (also known as Husk) has been diagnosed near Alnwick today on some cattle. This is normally associated with cattle in their first year of grazing, but if adults havenโt come into contact with the parasite before they can still be susceptible and develop a severe bronchitis, which can lead to death.
The video shows one of the many larvae found under the microscope in this cowโs dung. Keep an ear out for coughing cattle!
Hereโs the calf after the squeeze for 20 minutes. Straight up and over to the cow and sucking. The calf is now sucking fine by itself
A C A L F N A M E D J O D I E | Jodie is our wee Scottish pocket rocket, who joined the Alnorthumbria team just over a year ago after spending her first two and a half years of Grad Life in Yorkshire. Jodie is a mixed vet, and has a keen interest in small animal medicine and sheep work, especially laparoscopic AI which is a technique that she has learned in the last year. The most satisfying part of her job as a vet, is receiving good feedback from her clients and colleagues when a particular procedure or case has gone well. With all cases that go well, there are always those which donโt go the way that they are expected too, not finding the answers as to why something happened or is happening is the most frustrating part of being a vet for Jodie.
Jodie is a keen baker and maker of all things nice and is always supplying our practices with delicious cakes and bakes. She shares a love of pickles with one of our vet nurses Jess, and has even made her own โ which were delicious! She is very much enjoying living in Northumberland and loves exploring the countryside as long as it involves a trip to the pub on the way home for a cheeky Gin or taste of home Irn Bru! Jodie doesnโt have any pets yet, although it is hard not to inherit animals when you work for Alnorthumbria โ however in the mean time, Jodie has found a new love for keeping house plants, and looking after her friends pets.
One of Jodieโs most memorable moments from her time in practice is having a calf named in her honour!
โIn my previous job, I was called to a calving at a farm that had Dexter cattle, well known in the practice for being extremely feisty despite their small size! The cow, Cadbury, was obviously agitated when I arrived and the owner was very upset as she thought the calf had already passed away with the difficulty of the birth. Nevertheless, I set about calving her- the calfโs head and front legs were all twisted back, quite an unusual presentation but I managed to get e
