Doggy days out: The beaches and heathland of Studland Bay

This area of National trust land is home to 4 beaches and the largest area of lowland heath in Dorset, which has been designated as the UK’s first ‘super’ nature reserve

The 4 miles of sandy beach are open to dogs year round (on lead only between May 1st and September 30th), whilst the sheltered bay is ideal for swimming for owners and dogs alike.

For those with dogs, will find Knoll beach and Shell bay their best bet. Although listed as separate beaches, they join up and effectively create 1 long section of sand.

At the Shell bay end, you will find the chain ferry which takes cars across poole harbour.

This beach is served by a National Trust car park (charges apply to non members) and offers exceptional views across to sandbanks and poole.

Likewise Knoll beach end is also served by large car park (same charges apply) and is home to a beach cafe and toilet block.

This car park is an ideal spot to not only access the beach, but also explore the acres of heathland, sand dunes and woods the area has to offer.

In addition to dog owners, the area is also popular with naturists and has a designated area naturist section towards the middle of the beach, this is well signposted and can be easily avoided.
