Maggie is a wonderfully d***y Great Dane who’s never quite realised just how large she is. She's a gentle soul with a fondness for people, cuddles, and any furniture that looks remotely nap-worthy!

She’s looking for a loving home where any children are 12+, mostly because younger kids might not appreciate being gently flattened by a ginormous cuddle enthusiast.

She’s been good with other dogs in the past and could possibly live with a calm, well-socialised larger dog who doesn’t mind being drooled on occasionally. She might be okay with a cat too.

Maggie enjoys a bit of zooming when the mood strikes, so a secure garden is ideal. She's used to having access to one during the day and would love to have that again in her new home. She’s happy being left for a few hours, as long as she gets her fair share of cuddles when you're back.

She’ll chase a ball if you throw it, but bringing it back? That’s a bit much. She doesn't enjoy baths but does love being brushed and fussed over.

Maggie’s got a bit of strength in her stride, but as long as you’re ready for it, walks with her are perfectly doable…. and often entertaining.

In short: Maggie is a loving, slightly ridiculous, very cuddly companion who’s ready to charm her way into your home and possibly your armchair.

With VE Day very much in our thoughts, we wanted to share a little of what was happening at Cheltenham Animal Shelter during World War II.

In May 1939 Cheltenham Animal Shelter moved to where it is now, in Gardners Lane. That September war broke out.

Understandably, many people in Cheltenham could no longer care for their pets, so they ended up at the Shelter. As well as being inundated with pets, the Shelter became a first aid post for animals who were lost or injured because of the war.

To help, an appeal was launched for the town to bring their pets to the Shelter and register them with a small, numbered disc, so that if they were brought here, they could eventually be returned to their owners. During this time the Shelter also cared for the pets of soldiers and became a depot for the army's carrier pigeons.

It was a time to help people in the many ways they needed, and in the background, the Shelter did what it could to support the pets and people of Cheltenham.

Well, it’s the last few weeks of Canine Capers. It’s an early arrival this morning, a lovable regular boarding for the day and we said bye to our fun viszla yesterday, another regular and great pal of the resident dog here! Next week we have the Wheaten Terrier for a short stay. A lively and inquisitive breed! I’m feeding a new cat too this month which brings variety into the mix. 🐈
Dog theft seems to be very much out there so please do not take chances with your pets. No leaving in your car without it being in full sight or tying up outside a shop! It takes two seconds to steal a pet but sometimes years to find them again if at all. Mix up your walks, thieves watch when you walk your dogs. Don’t get distracted if someone asks you about your dog. Carrying an alarm is useful as noise helps to alert anyone near you if you’re having a problem🥲Keep your dogs cool if the weather warms up. All common sense really but then again some people seem to be lacking in this.
