Separation Anxiety Edition 🐾
Just a gentle reminder 🤣☀️🔥
Contrary to popular belief, puppy classes shouldn’t be 20 pups running around in a hall unable to focus. Small class sizes with lots of breaks enable them to focus better and therefore have a more enjoyable learning experience for all. Our puppy classes have no more than 4 puppies so that everyone gets some 121 time to make sure their technique is setting owners and their pups up for success 💖

Recall top tip! Adding in a long line really will help you in your recall training. In my opinion it is a vital tool in perfecting that recall as you can control the environment (or access to). Please do use a long line attached to a harness. As mentioned in the video, this was my first session with this client and they did not yet own a harness. So I was happy to go ahead with the session on the collar as we were working in an environment with minimal distractions, one the dog was very familiar with and with advice to purchase a harness for their sessions moving forward.

‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ - you certainly can!
Meet 9 y/o Golden Retriever Wilson. He was finding walks stressful, overwhelming and his owner was finding she would often be pulled over and into the road among other things when he reacted.
So we started by implementing some enrichment games, confidence courses and some simple confidence boosting exercises in the house. I wanted him to have as much opportunity in those first few weeks to bring those cortisol levels down.
We also scrapped on lead walks altogether for now, after some digging I believe that lead frustration was very much a part to play. I wanted Wilson the freedom to move, relax, be able to engage with some sniff time and have the freedom to run. So we introduced a longline, to enable his owner to do this safely. With some quiet locations for walking to avoid triggers as much as possible to allow for this ‘reset’ time.
We also introduced a ‘this way’ cue, which we started off by reinforcing this in the house as well as introducing a clicker. You can see here in this video how relaxed his body language is and you can hear his owner is nice and relaxed too. Happy walks for both!
All in all, the aim of the game was to make Wilson to feel less stressed and have more outlets to sniff, decompress and for walks to be more enjoyable for both of them.
I’m pleased to say due to this owners hard work, in just a few weeks we have already seen great progress! Just changing a few things up has made all the difference. We still have a way to go and we will start to implement counter conditioning for his triggers but epic progress already 👏🏻
And yes, this was all achieved by online consultations 🤓
Client feedback: ‘I’m really enjoying our new walks. It doesn’t feel like hard work at all and I do feel a little more confident! I even managed to get him to turn around and follow me on his own wh
