Having a dog with separation anxiety is hard!

No one can prepare you for how hard it is to have a dog with separation anxiety. Constantly feeling like you’re doing the wrong thing or not knowing where to start to help.

People lack serious empathy when it comes to having a dog with behavioural issues across the board, but with separation anxiety I feel it seems to be highly judged. Like it’s always the fault of the dog guardian it’s happened.

It’s challenging on your mental health, your relationships, your finances!

Constantly getting unsolicited advice from people that you have tried or know doesn’t work.

Let alone the isolation it can cause. We really do understand how hard it is.

Comment ‘TEAM’ below if you would like to know more about our programs and join an understanding team who will help be there for you both in learning how to get your dog being comfortable home alone but also be there for supporting you - the human!

I know it’s hard.

I know it’s slow.

I know it can be frustrating.

But I want to thank you for choosing kindness, regardless. When it would be easier to choose convenience. When it would be easier to choose suppression.

Believe me, your dog thanks you as well.

Such a big step in the right direction!

For those of you who weren’t aware, there will be a ban on all use of e-collars from Feb 2024

In a historic moment for animal welfare, we’re welcoming news today that the Government is completely banning the use of remote controlled electric shock collars in England, as of 1 February 2024, following our ten year campaign. To find out more, visit thekennelclub.org.uk/shockcollarsbanned

Happy Monday from me and Luna!

The high’s when training is going well with separation anxiety can be really high, but when your dog has a bad day the lows can feel devastating.

Remember, variability is normal as with any behavioural modification training.

A fear or anxiety doesn’t just go away over night and there will be times that your dog will be able to cope with things better than others.

There are so many factors that go in to their threshold to cope with exposure to a stressor. Many of which are outside of our control!

Remember tomorrow is another day and you’ve got this!

I’m signing off now until Monday as I’m off on my hen woooo 💃🎉👰‍♀️💍Have a great weekend everyone and I’ll be back next w...

BRAIN UNDER CONSTRUCTION!
The challenges of teenage dogs
There’s a saying that parents who have gone through the teenage years with their off spring will relate to - “Parents with teenagers understand why some animals eat their young!”

Many dog owners are unaware that dogs also go through a teenage stage and are frustrated and unprepared for the changes this brings. It’s a sad reality that this is the age that many dogs are surrendered to shelters as their owners no longer “like” the way their dogs behave, can’t handle them and give up on them.

The teenage brain is going through many changes. Think of it as being “rewired”. The rewiring process can cause some parts not to work at all or only work sometimes. Some parts work too much with too much current and new wires cause unexpected results.

There are many similarities to the changing human teenage brain. There’s a valid scientific reason why car insurance premiums for young adults under 25 are more expensive. The brain is not fully matured – irrational decisions, risk taking, poor choices and accidents are more likely to happen.

Be patient, understanding and most of all consistent with your teenage dog. Don’t give up on them. They are feeling just as frustrated as we are. Being aware of what is happening in their brain as it develops to full maturity helps us to be more accepting. Remember that this is just a phase and it will get better.
