On a rainy day last week I supported Reign’s owners with helping her to be able to settle in public. Prior to our session, Reign was finding it very difficult to settle whilst other dogs would walk past and she would react by lunging and barking. We set Reign up to succeed in our session by intermittently rewarding her for staying calm and then I was able to gradually introduce Marty into the equation. As we set Reign up so well, she remained calm throughout and had no reactions 👏 can you see her in the image? She felt secure tucked away here and didn’t feel anxious about her resources as we’d changed how she felt about dogs passing or just being nearby. We talked about choosing a good place to sit, on this table they had plenty of exit points if they needed to move Reign away at all to reset and her settle mat was positioned so that she was not exposed or feeling the need to be on high alert…Marty did so well himself and he enjoyed a zoom around the beach when we were finished 🐕

Even though I work with dogs, I always underestimate how much walking I actually do 😱 I’ve just completed two consults with dogs and their owners this afternoon and I’ve done about 3 hours worth of walking…🚶‍♀️after two training sessions this morning as well I’ve suddenly realised I’m quite tired 😂 now to walk both of my own dogs 🐕💪 I’ve loved the sessions I have done today, a great day seeing so much progress being made 🤩

Introducing... 1-2-1 Scentwork Sessions 🤩

The Scentwork classes I have been doing have sparked a lot of interest but spaces are limited and classes are not suitable for all dogs. Our new 1-2-1 sessions allows you and your dog to learn the incredible skills needed for this fast rising sport. A great activity for you and your dog to enjoy! Our 1-2-1 sessions involve a regular opportunity for you and your dog to progress with Scentwork and learn to detect select odours. It can involve different members of the family too, making it a great activity for all! I am also happy to offer booking for small groups - ideal if you and a friend or two wish to try this as a regular activity with your dogs together. Scentwork is suitable for all breeds of dogs but particularly benefits active breeds such as German Shepherds, Malinois, Spaniels, Collies and many more!

Please get in touch to find out more about Scentwork sessions or if you would like to book.

Anyone who has ever just had two horses knows how challenging it can be to do something with one without the other! 🐴 being herd animals, they feel far safer and more relaxed when they are in the company of other horses. There is actually another pony here that I hoped Merlin would connect with and use her as support for when Libby is not there but even though she’s just next door, it wasn’t enough for him to feel safe. So I’ve spent a long time building up his confidence and ability to feel safe and secure on his own so that I can start taking Libby out more 😊(it’s taken far longer than planned because I simply don’t make enough time for this but I’m determined to do this more 👊) Today I took Libby for a solo in hand walk and Merlin stayed here eating the whole time 😍 no calling or pacing or signs of distress. He watched her leave and then went back to the haylage 🏆 great opportunity for me to know build up her fitness and take her out more regularly 💪

Libby the horse often wants to join in with the dog training classes. This week she broke through the fence to the left that dared to contain her so that she could get a closer look at the action! I normally purposely keep the horses further away as not all dogs are used to them but Libby wasn’t having that 😂 we used this as a great opportunity to work through the unplanned distraction and the dogs did great! One of them is actually reactive to horses but Libby provided an opportunity to practice desensitising them through scentwork. The progress these three dogs have made is incredible 🤩 testament to their wonderful owners!

I am currently collecting harnesses if anyone has any old, no longer in use ones that they wish to donate! These will be part of the ‘harness library’ I’ll be creating for all puppy clients going forwards. As we all know, puppies grow so quickly and it can a challenge keeping up with the need for a new harness through each stage! If you would like to donate a harness, no matter what size, just let me know either through private message or when I see you in person 😊 feel free to share with local friends and family as I’m happy to collect a fair few!

Many are out there currently debating the correct use for a whip in the equine world given recent events in the media. All whilst I am here, having abandoned the use of whips and many other aversive tools a long time ago, teaching my horses to hold sticks in their mouths or target them!

It’s not about whether you should only be threatening the horse with the whip or how hard it is acceptable to hit them or how many times. The question is why are we still using them at all? 🤔

I’m not passing judgement on anyone, I’m really not, I regularly used to ride with whips and I did use them. I don’t now and not only are my horses happier, so am I. Once you find a different, kinder way you don’t go back 🙏

When our dogs struggle to ignore certain things out on walks such as people, other dogs, children, whatever! We can help guide them by teaching these three cues. Once these cues are well established, you’ll often find your dog will choose to offer these behaviours rather than focus on their triggers.

“What’s this?” - used to get our dog to look at us. Once we have our dog’s attention, we can help guide them if needed. Great to practice randomly on walks, even when nothing is around. Not only does it help make the behaviour a strong, reliable one, it is a great way to reward our dogs for engaging with us and strengthens our relationship with them.

“Close” - used to help keep our dogs walking nicely by our side for short periods. This helps young dogs to learn that it is far more rewarding to walk alongside us rather than jump up on a passing person or go nose to nose with an unknown dog. As soon as our dog has offered us this for a short period, we can then allow them to go off and sniff to their hearts content. An entire walk by your side is not realistic or fair to our dogs, they will find it far more enjoyable to focus for short periods of time and enjoy the rest of their walk doing dog things 🐕

“Let’s Go” - ideal for dogs that show reactivity behaviours, when you come face to face with another dog on a narrow country lane, you can do a quick change of direction and find an area with more space. The more you practice this, you can rely less on having to pull your dog away from a trigger and rather have a dog follow you willingly because they understand the cue and know a reward will be given.

The aim of these behaviours is to help guide our dogs when they need it. Our goal is to always aim for our dogs to feel emotionally balanced and able to eventually make these choices themselves without needing our help. These behaviours soon become so rewarding that our dogs will offer engagement without being asked. Helping them through challenging situations using these skill will result in a more confident dog that knows we will help them to navigate situations when needed.

Teddy wowed all of us in Wednesday's adult training class with his athletic agility skills! Teddy did very well as he found the horses very concerning when he first saw them. His owner, Leila, was great at offering Teddy the space and support he needed whilst he adjusted to the horses being there. He was then able to show off to us all with his incredible skills! 🤩 Great to see such a young handler prioritizing her dog's comfort over training goals, which helped Teddy's confidence immensely!

Marty clearly approved of all of the tyres 🛞 I managed to get today 😂 loving creating more obstacles for the dogs (and horses!) to enjoy. I’m always on the lookout for more - if anyone sees any tractor tyres become available or substantial logs/tree trunks let me know 😃 the dogs in our adult sessions today had a great time exploring them all…

I’ve been working a lot on the field over the past week completing fencing, weeding, mud control and just starting to put in some equipment that will be dog friendly (but also stand up to Libby’s curiosity 🐴) all ready to use this space to train some dogs (and their people!) Marty is loving the the new equipment to play on 😅

How do you keep yourselves motivated and on track when it comes to training your dog/your horse? 🤔

I feel my lifestyle can be a bit all over the place - I'm often here, there, everywhere working with different people and their animals; writing up extensive behaviour plans and promoting a business. I am then caring for my own animals - two horses, two dogs and an elderly, princess of a cat 🐈‍⬛ finding time to teach behaviours to my animals amongst all of that can be a challenge at times...

I find I succeed best when I incorporate training within my daily routines, I use the outings I already take my dogs on as training opportunities - I ensure I am always prepared to reward the behaviours I want and practice skills in real life situations 🐶

I also ensure if I want to achieve a specific goal with the dogs or horses that I tell someone about it 😀 I set myself a realistic goal with a realistic deadline and then I tell a friend or family member about it. This helps keep me more accountable and as a person, I need that sort of pressure to get things done! 😅 Making use of a trainer or behaviour specialist can really help with keeping you on track to achieving your goals.

You've got someone there who is just as invested about your success and someone to brainstorm different ideas with when it's not progressing the way you hoped. Sometimes we can keep on track and do everything we planned and it still doesn't work out - animals needs us to be prepared to be flexible and having someone to support you can help keep your motivation up and avoid feelings of deflation or failure.

A couple of great shots from one of the Adult classes on Wednesday evening. We worked on helping the dogs feel comfortable and relaxed, staying a short distance from their handlers 😃 it was a great exercise to see how differently the dogs felt. Luna settled near enough immediately and was happy to stay there. Dava needed it breaking down into small steps but did great once she understood the idea. All of our dogs excel in some areas and find others more challenging, it’s about supporting them at whatever rate they need 😊 you never get true relaxation and understanding through forcing things to happen so patience and understanding is key 🔑

This esteemed young gentleman requires a home to be patient and kind with him to support his needs as he is anxious around new people and handling.

In addition gentle reader, to apply for the adoption of Lord Oakley, please complete the form below.

Does anyone else’s dogs tell them when it’s time for everyone to go to bed? 🛌 😅 here I am being summoned by the shining twins last night…

And yes my dogs sleep in the bed 🛌 😱 as a behaviour professional, I have no problems with where the dog sleeps as long as it doesn’t result in problems or concerns. If you’re all happy with it, go for it 😃 same for dogs on furniture 🛋️ so you can all stop feeling worried about telling me if your dogs sleep on the bed, so do mine 😂

Just having a cuppa and catching up on emails before heading off to set up for the scentwork class this evening and Marty is here asking if we can play the game where I practice doing things like eye drops 😂 literally turned a commonly negative experience into one he can’t get enough off!

Positive mounted archery gone wrong 😱 an unfortunate mistake but both of us were fine and I’m sure it won’t be the last! I did fall off but landed on my feet which is much easier to do apparently if your crouched on their back like a jockey 😂 I know what I need to do to avoid again - invest in a new quiver that will stay put! You can’t hear in the video but I apologise to her just before she bolts 🥹 she is definitely much more resilient than she was and I love doing these weird and wonderful things with her. I just need to be less clumsy! Positive reinforcement training has made a huge difference to our relationship and what sort of things we can bounce back from. I wasn’t sure if she would opt into me getting on again after that but she was happy to line herself up for me to do so which is her go ahead cue to me. As always, do not try attempt to do this with your horse unless being overseen by a professional, preferably one with better archery skills 🤣

I’ve had some great canine sessions with clients this week, no videos or photos though as I’m so invested in coaching people with their dogs that I’m not often thinking about content for socials 🤷‍♀️ not to mention I often work with people who are having a really difficult time with their dogs, the last thing they want is for me to put a camera in their face 📸 don’t get me wrong, I’ll always try and snap a photo or a video when milestones are being reached, I’m just as proud as the owners! But when the behaviour is at its most challenging, I am there to support both the owner and the dog with my full attention 👏 so when your see videos on social media where the dog is lunging or barking, just think to yourself is that what the dog needs in that moment, to be filmed and goaded into a reaction? Or would a skilled behaviour professional prioritise helping that dog to feel as comfortable as possible whilst looking at how best to help them 🦮

So instead you will just have to enjoy a picture of my face 🫣 alongside my two dogs 🐕 running around a nearby field…

🐾 Foster Appeal 🐾

Not quite sure if you are ready to adopt? Want to offer your home up to someone that needs it? Have you considered fostering?

Oakley is one of many dogs looking for a foster home. Although he is happy as larry walking about and exploring new places, kennels is a difficult place for him. Oakley has come such a long way with our team and we feel that to continue that progress, Oakley requires a home to settle into with someone who can provide him with;

🐾 a quiet place for him to learn what living in a home is like
🐾 a patient fosterer to support his needs with the guidance from our behaviour team
🐾 bringing Oakley to any vet appointments we have scheduled for him
🐾 giving Oakley all the toys and enrichment we have given you
🐾 to help Oakley settle into a home life ready for adoption in the future

Fostering is a chance for our dogs to learn new tricks and the idea of a living in a safe home. We will support fosterers with everything from full veterinary expenses to supporting with those toileting issues that might be experienced early on.

To discuss fostering with one of our team members, get in touch! You can email us at [email protected] or give us a ring on 0300 123 0745

When training puppies it’s only fair we expect them to focus on us for short periods. In order to practice that today we played a game of the floor is lava 😂 the handlers used the black mats to keep their dogs focus for short spells of loose lead walking at their handlers side whilst ignoring the dog in the middle. The dogs needed to keep all four paws on the mats as they walked - once off of the line of mats, the dogs could explore the hall as they wished.
The dog in the middle also played the floor is lava and the handlers only challenge was to keep their puppy on their small island of mats as the dogs walked past around them whilst maintaining a slack lead 😊 all of the dogs did fantastic, even when I kept moving the mats closer to add difficulty 😅 a great exercise for teaching dogs what we want them to do in the presence of distractions - the distraction this time being the other dogs 🐕

I’ve enjoyed a really productive day seeing all different dogs today showing such varying behaviours. Marty assisted me with a couple of the clients and dogs I saw today and he was a superstar as always. He got to enjoy a paddle in Llyn Geirionydd for being such a wonderful, reliable boy 🥰 I feel very privileged that he tornadoed 🌪️ into my life when he did, I feel very lucky to have him 💕

In our adult classes this evening we looked at preparing are dogs for the unexpected in terms of procedures or treatments they may need in the future. Our dog and handler combinations learnt some mat work and chin rest behaviours in order to allow clear communication during future procedures their dog may need to have such as eye drops, face wipes, injections, nail care and so on! These first steps will set them all up for successful and stress free handling going forwards… I am continued to be really impressed by our younger handlers who attend the classes, I better watch out in case they become trainers of the future 😂 love to see whole families getting involved with learning how to communicate with their dog. Well done everyone 😃😃

About

I am an animal photographer and an artist based in North Wales. I am very passionate about animals and being able to capture their unique personalities through both photography and art is something I pride myself on. I feel capturing as many memories possible of our animal friends is important as they are such prominent parts of our lives.

I myself have a beautiful horse and loving dog who are often the subjects of my work so I know only too well how strong the bond is between animal and human.
