Today Marty and I completed our first Scentwork UK trial 🤩 I am so proud of him, he found the whole experience completely baffling wondering why I’d driven him miles away to a place where there were loads of other dogs floating about. He found being somewhere new with other dogs around challenging but I’m proud of his ability to trust me and show off some of how amazing he is.

Well done to Laura and Eva who also attended the same trial as their first! Eva took the whole experience in her stride and I hope enjoyed herself as much as it looked like she did 🥰🐾 I wish I could have watched Laura and Eva’s rounds but that would have been cheating 🤣

I’ve been working with Ella since last year for her reactivity towards other dogs 🐕 Ella has had a poor start to life having been used for breeding and it’s highly unlikely she had much socialisation at all. Ella’s behaviour in the house is perfect, however, the outside world has been quite daunting for Ella as she’s just not experienced it.

When we started working together, I assessed Ella with one of my own dogs to see at what distance she could cope with seeing a dog without reacting. This was basically an entire field at that point. I remember I could only just about see her from where I handled my dog… She couldn’t take food, was whining excessively and started pulling her owner towards the nearest exit as just the sight of a dog considerably far away was too overwhelming.

Ella has come a very long way! Here she is in our session at the park where there was a frequent flow of dogs… we kept our distance to keep Ella comfortable but supported her with seeing dogs whilst experiencing positive feelings herself through games.

Ella’s owner has worked so hard to:
✅ Walk Ella in quiet places for a significant amount of time to avoid her from becoming overwhelmed regularly
✅ Teach her skills such as checking in, pattern games and exit cues
✅ gradually expose her to dogs at a distance
✅ Calmly creating more space when she has had a reaction towards certain dogs

There is still continuous work to do as always with behaviour modification but I am really impressed with how far both Ella and her owner have come. Ella’s owner has a great understanding of Ella’s needs and body language and is able to support her throughout 🙌🏻

Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Nahla, the American Bulldog 🐕 Nahla is lovely in every way but has a habit of pulling on the lead… she and her owner did a great job in her first session 🤩🐾

The make shift cafe was a great success! ☕️We had the dogs settling beautifully, practicing some new skills to help them feel safe when dogs pass by and handlers were able to walk their dogs through a slalom whilst also holding cups of water 💦🤩very impressive and a great class that take whatever’s thrown at them and smash it 🐾

The weather has been so awful the past few days that we are going to work on some indoor skills with the dogs in the adult class this morning. Welcome to my make shift cafe ☕️ where the dogs will work on various skills such as settling, walking on a loose lead whilst drinks are carried, leaving dropped food, how to manage when other dogs or people walk very close by and much more 🐾 looking forward to having some fun with this this morning 😊

I am an animal photographer and an artist based in North Wales. I am very passionate about animals and being able to capture their unique personalities through both photography and art is something I pride myself on. I feel capturing as many memories possible of our animal friends is important as they are such prominent parts of our lives.
