A massive THANKYOU! to Heather Doyal HD Pet Styling
This is for educational purposes Bubbles And Brushes Pet Grooming. do offer all clients a free lesson in the thorough brushing and maintenance of their pet.
This is the rescue that came to me a few days ago.
Due to the severity of the matting I thought about sending to a vet for sedation and clip off, this can cost the owner 100s of pounds.
I Sought further advice from HD pet styling in Darwin who kindly offered to assist me with this difficult case ,as I did not want to cause the little doggie any distress or injury. Heather Doyle is a very experienced groomer and has dealt with many welfare cases in her time as a Groomer.
The doggie is a rescue, and has only had her a few days, the owner has been given all the advice she needs about maintaining her coat so please do not comment about this being a poor owner. We know nothing about the situation prior to her being rescued.
This is sadly what happens when you dont get your dog or cat groomed professionally and you dont brush and the comb properly and daily . The coat matts up and becomes impossible to do anything with it other than shave it down.
Groomers do not enjoy doing this nor is it being lazy or taking the easy route. She took almost 2 hours to shave off an a 0.5mm blade ,that is essentially a surgical blade used to prep a dog prior to a spay for example. I had to use such a short blade because that was all that could get betweenthe matting and her skin. We have to go so slowly to prevent injury because as you shave away the matting the skin gets pinched up into a tent ,like if you pinch and pull up the loose skin on the back of your hand. If you try to shave too quickly that pinched up skin can slip between the blades and slice it open in a very big wound that needs stitches.
It is emotionally ,mentally and physically hard for groomers to work with dogs like this. It breaks our hearts . We would much rather do a fluffy cut than something like this .
A dog in this condition could also have pre existing issues like hot spots, traction alopecia (where the matting has been ripped from the skin) bruising from the matting ,skin problems, infections , open wounds .these are not the groomers fault.
Any long coated breeds need regular grooming every 4-6 weeks with daily brushing and combing if you want a fluffy hair cut or 6-8 weeks if you want a short cut with weekly brushing and combing .
