Saying 'No'
April 25, 2022

Hi there , how often do you say the word ‘no’? In general I mean, not just to your dog , probably quite a lot.

A question I get asked is when I say ‘no’ to my dog it takes no notice, why? Well it can be a few reasons.

You haven’t actually taught the dog what ‘no’ means

You say the word ‘no’ so often the dog thinks it is his name, or has become so desensitised, it has lost its meaning.

You might jump up, chase it and shout at the dog ’no’ as he/she runs off with your sandwich . Added fun they not only got the sandwich but enjoyed a game of chase in the process.

Using another word as a mark for the dog to understand such as ‘leave’ or just a noise such as ’eh’ ‘eh’. just to interrupt the dog to stop whatever it is doing. As soon as it does stop, that’s when you redirect with lots of praise. If it is difficult like for example when you having food and the dog keeps jumping up on you, give the dog something to do of its own, such as a treat toy. If you use a crate put it in there for them. Meal time can become a positive experience for you and your dog.

In other situations you need to train your dog to ‘leave’, ‘give’ for example. even asking your dog to sit and rewarding them for doing it can stop some behaviour.

I have a Retriever who gets very impatient with standing around when he is out for a walk while I am talking to someone. Asking him to sit or down helps to keep him calm and helps prevent him barking. When he is in training mode , he then will focus on his job i.e. sitting.

I suppose the main point being you have to teach them , whatever behaviour that wants you to shout ‘no’ you need to find something positive to distract to a wanted behaviour. yelling ‘no’ does just not work.

Focus and Leads
April 23, 2022
As usual this blog is my own opinion and I do offer for comments in order to help people struggling with their dogs in any way when they look at my website.

We bring home our puppy, then at some point before we take the puppy out we put a lead to them attached to a harness or collar. I think we often think the puppy will just accept this as if they were born to understand the lead. If fact we expect a lot from our puppies , not to toilet in the house, what ‘no’ means, what to chew and what not to chew as if they come programmed with this knowledge. We forget a puppy is a baby of a completely different species, with a completely different set of natural behaviours, such as biting each other, chewing whatever is available, to toilet when they need to go, which can be a nice soft carpet. They are just beginning to learn what they can do and what they can’t when this foreign object get put on to them.

Puppies tend to act if a few different when they first have a lead put on.:-

They think it is a new chew toy.

They try and get it off

They won’t move as you try and get them to walk.

All puppies are different, but putting a lead on them when they are young will help them desensitize before the first time they go out. And if you make following you around the house or garden fun using treats, toys play with the lead on them you are beginning to get them to focus on you.

Whether it is lead walking, recall teaching your puppy to focus on you is the underlining key to good lead walking and recall. You go for a walk with your puppy or adult dog on their lead. They pull you out of the house, down the garden path and onto the pavement. In that scenario is the puppy or dog focussed on you? They are on their own path, you become just an object attached to the other end of the lead. We have all seen funny videos with dogs pulling their owners over!

Whether you have a puppy or adult dog, teaching focus in a fun way will really help you when out and about in the outside world with all the fun, smelly things dogs just love.

Check out my website paws4asecond.co.uk for more doggy tips. would love some comments and thoughts or if you want some advise and help. Thanks Steph
