CoFarm produce, available to buy at

We’ve popped into Green Nest on Mill Road today to drop off more of our fresh produce.

This week, there’s cavolo nero, curly kale and radicchio (all pictured) and also a variety of squashes including Barbara butternut squash, acorn and spaghetti squash. There’s also CoFarm carrots and beetroot available, as well as lots of other delicious produce from across Cambridge.

If you’d like to purchase CoFarm fruit and veg outside of our CoFarming sessions, you can do so by popping along to Green Nest on Mill Road, or Abbey People in the Barnwell Community Centre. We drop off fresh veg throughout the week.

CoFarm ‘turkey’

With great timing for the current season, we found turkeytail fungi growing at CoFarm.

Usually found on oak and beech, we found turkeytail growing on the wood weighing down our netting.

Identified by its stripped, fan-like turkeytail appearance, this bracket fungi is well associated with this time of year. In Victorian England, turkeytail fungi was a popular Christmas decoration. It was made into tabletop centrepieces across the country and decorated ladies’ hats too.

Head to the kale patch nearest the CoFarmer shelter to find it growing (or have a look on oak or beech trees or wood when next in a walk).

CoFarm leeks.

We’ve started to harvest and enjoy our delicious leeks here at CoFarm.

We have recently uncovered our leeks now that the risk of allium leaf miners is reduced. Leeks are part of the allium family and can be impacted by both the adults and larvae of the allium leaf miner, that also enjoys feeding on leeks (we don’t blame them).

Ways to reduce the impact of this allium leaf miner is to keep leeks covered with insect proof mesh between March - June and September - November and to rotate crops. Growing leeks, and other allium family members such as chives, onions and garlic, in different areas helps to reduce the risk of being impacted the following years.

Our delicious leeks, as well as other veg will be available to buy on Thursday 19 and Sunday 22 December 2pm- 4pm.

Book a free place to let us know you’re coming - it helps us to know how much to harvest, and how many mince pies to get in. (Why not stop to enjoy a mince pie and warm drink round the fire).

Sprouts! Love them or hate them? The vegetable able to cause disagreements across the country!

Last week our CoFarmers worked hard on maintaining our sprout patch, removing diseased and rotten leaves and the sprout stalks where the sprouts had blown.

Blown sprouts are open and leafy in appearance, and unlike the tight round buttons that we are used to seeing on our plates at Christmas (if you let them on your plate that is).

We have plenty of sprouts, and delicious sprout tops, available to buy for your Christmas dinner if you’re celebrating, or to just stock up the fridge if you’re not!

Join us on Thursday 19 and 22 December between 2-4pm to buy your winter veg and stay for a mince pie round the fire afterwards. Book a free place via link in our comments to let us know you’re coming along.

Question is … are you a sprout lover or hater? Personally - we LOVE them!

It’s chilly at CoFarm!

The farm has looked lovely covered in frost this week, with lovely blue skies. We’ve kept warm by turning our of our compost heaps over, and fully emptying another compost bay onto one of our plots.

If you’re visiting us for a session soon, don’t forget to wrap up warm.

🥬Lett-uce talk about lettuces for a minute… (and chicory and salad leaves)

We’ve grown lots of varieties of French and Italian heirloom lettuces this year, including ‘Marvel of Four Seasons’ and ‘Concarde’. Whilst the varieties of lettuces we’ve enjoyed over the summer are coming to an end, we’ve got lots of winter salad leaves to look forward to.

Our winter salad leaves include radicchio/ chicory many varieties of which originate from the Veneto region in Italy, such as ‘Variegata di Chioggia’. They have wonderful colours and patterns, perfect to brighten up drizzly days and dinner plates alike.

We’re also growing different salad leaves such as mustard leaves, rocket and winter purslane. We hope to harvest these until the start of March.

Thank you to our friends at Franchi seeds for donating many of our lettuce and salad seeds to us.

An exciting gift left by one of our wildlife residents. An owl pellet!

Whist setting up in the morning for our CoFarmer session, we were delighted to find an owl pellet on the potting shelf.

It seems like an owl has used our CoFarmer shelter as a perch and took the opportune moment to leave us its owl pellet gift.

We frequently see of birds of prey such as kestrels, sparrow hawks, buzzards and kites flying over the farm, and now we know we have owls visiting (likely tawny owl looking at this pellet).

As an agroecological farm, we farm in harmony with nature and don’t use any chemicals or pesticides on site. This is crucial for protecting species throughout food chains. We farm in a way that boots biodiversity on, and surrounding the farm, providing habitats, refugia, and food resources for different species.

We were thrilled to find this owl pellet and know that we’re sharing CoFarm with nature. We just hope we can catch a glimpse of the gifter sometime.

Caption this CoFarm carrot!

We’ve been enjoying harvesting our carrots over the past few months, and as we thin the carrot patch out and the carrots get bigger in size, we’ve been enjoying some unusual shapes, sizes… and poses.

We thought this carrot was particularly great for its humorous pose.

CoFarm cabbages!

Our cabbages have grown really well this year, and we’ve been harvesting some huge ones over the past few weeks that have weighed over 3kgs!

We’ve grown several different varieties including red, white, savoy and ‘filder kraut’ - all of which delicious.

If you would like to buy any of our produce, you can do so at the end of a CoFarming volunteer session. Book a space to volunteer on our website to join us.

Our CoFarm produce is also available at Abbey People Food Hub, in the Barnwell Community Centre. Check out their website for more information.

A CoFarm Cinderella pumpkin

This beautiful French variety of pumpkin is officially called ‘Rouge Vif D’Etampes’ but is also known as ‘Cinderella’ as it looks like the pumpkin carriage first featured in the 1950 Disney film.

Alternatively, this beautiful pinky red variety of pumpkin is also known as a ‘cheese pumpkin’ because of its flat top helping it to resemble a wheel of cheese (rather than tasting cheesy).

This variety can easily weigh in at 20 pounds and is great for making soup. A 20 pound pumpkin can make many portions and over a gallon of soup!

We grew several Cinderella pumpkins at the farm this year that have gone away with happy CoFarmers.

Did you buy one of our ‘Cinderella’ or other CoFarm pumpkins or squashes? We’d love to see what dishes you’ve been making with them if so. Tag us to share your photos.

Introducing ‘Barbara’, ‘Big Max’, and ‘Tiny Tim’.

“Barbara” (on the left) is a pear shaped, elongated squash with a lovely patterned skin. ‘Barbara squashes’ keep their stripy skins and have a deep orange flesh on the inside as they mature.

“Big Max” (on the right) is a variety of pumpkin that can reach up to 45kg in weight and is often a variety used in competitions as it maintains its structure well as it grows. ‘Big Max’ comes in different colours, and in contrast to its outside skin, this varieties’ flesh is a deep orange and sweet in flavour.

Lastly, ‘Tiny Tim’ is at the front. This isn’t its real name, but our CoFarmers have been enjoying making up different names over the past few weeks, with this type being named ‘Tiny Tim’ due to its small stature.

A selection of different pumpkins and squashes will be available this Sunday at our birthday celebration. Book a free space to join us.

Quinoa 'rainbow' 🌈

We've been growing quinoa for its autumn colour, and we're so glad that we have as it's been a welcome burst of colour against some of the recent grey days.

Quinoa loves growing in poor soil conditions, and we've been growing our quinoa in the crop margins and path edges.

We are looking forward to experimenting with growing and preparing this plant over the next growing season and using it as a harvestable crop (in addition to being a mood booster).

We'll be exploring what variety grows best in here in Cambridge, trialling drying and threshing the seed (removing the seed from the plant) and removing the high saponin content found in quinoa. Saponin occurs in many plants, with quinoa having particularly high levels in its seeds. Saponins are very bitter in taste, and whilst very useful for defence against pests, it's unpleasant for us to eat.

Fingers crossed for some CoFarm quinoa next year!

Big, small, tiny, huge, round, flat, bumpy, smooth, stripy, squat, tall...

We've grown lots of different varieties of winter squashes and pumpkins this year, and whilst they all look very different in appearance, they share one common element - being delicious!

Our produce is available to buy when you volunteer on a session with us. Head to our website to book a space and enjoy our produce at 50%.

Have you cooked something with one of our pumpkins? Share your photos with us. We'd love to see what you're all cooking.

CoFarm chillies providing heat on rainy days.

It’s been a very wet and windy couple of days at the farm but our vibrant produce, such as these chillies, have helped provide the warmth and colour against the grey skies that we’ve needed.

Thank you to everyone who has come along and helped rain and shine this week. If you would like to come along and join us, wrap up and book a space on our website. (Link below). We’d love to have you along.

Together we grow

Incorporated on World Food Day in October 2019, CoFarm is a not for profit group of companies on a mission to create fairer access to high quality, organic food for all.

We are working to ensure that, by 2030, everyone in the United Kingdom will have access to local, sustainably produced food and opportunities to enjoy growing and sharing it with others.

We are in the process of co-creating our first community farm with and for the community in Cambridge, UK.
