Brushing your pet’s teeth thoroughly 2–3 times a week will go a long way to improving their oral health.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to get your cat or dog used to having their teeth brushed!

Step 1 - lift the lips to expose the teeth
Step 2 - run your finger along their teeth
Step 3 - squeeze some toothpaste onto your finger and allow them to lick it off
Step 4 - introduce them to the toothbrush!
Step 5 - allow them to lick the toothpaste off the toothbrush
Step 6 - start brushing the teeth, gradually increasing the number during each session until all teeth can be brushed

Thinking about what to have for your Christmas dinner? No doubt your furry companion will want in on the action too!

Though it is tempting to share leftovers with your cat or dog, there is a lot of food they shouldn’t eat, including oils, garlic and onions, as it can cause them great discomfort and may need medical attention. Not what you want on Christmas Day!

If you would like to make a special Christmas dish for your beloved companion, here’s a list of what are safe for your cat or dog to eat:

• A slice of plain, cooked, white turkey meat
• A small piece of plain, cooked, boneless salmon
• Raw carrots
• Plain brussels sprouts
• Plain boiled parsnips

Signs of stress in your cat

If you see changes in the behaviour of your cat, it could be a sign of stress. Look out for the following indicators:

1. Destructive behaviour, through chewing, vertical scratching or clawing
2. Behaving differently with people, animals or their environment
3. Urinating or soiling outside their litter tray
4. Body language changes
5. Excessive meowing or crying
6. Hiding or withdrawing
7. Becoming aggressive or defensive
8. Changes in eating, grooming or activity levels

Prepare for fireworks and parties

Though we can prepare ourselves for fireworks and festivities, our pets can’t. Here are some tips on how to best prepare your beloved for a potentially stressful night.

1. Find out when your local fireworks displays are taking place.
2. Ensure your cat or dog’s microchip information is up-to-date.
3. Keep your pets indoors and lock cat or dog flaps, and bring your rabbit’s hutch indoors (if they live outside).
4. Create a den for your pet to be soothed, complete with some of your clothing, toys and treats.
5. Keep doors and windows shut.
6. Plug a Beaphar Comfort Calming Diffuser in a few days before the firework displays or social gatherings, to fill your home with the calming pheromones your pet will love.
7. Alternatively, apply a Beaphar Comfort Calming Spot-On (cat and dog only) which will work for up to one week.
