KS Animal Behaviour I help guardians of anxious and rescue dogs support and empower their dogs. Empathy and Empowerment For Dogs and Guardians.
(21)

We all want to have stress-free, fun, and enjoyable walks with our dogs, we have visions of days at the beach and trips to the pub garden. Some dogs find this really difficult, especially if they are anxious or fearful. It can be difficult when people judge you for your dog’s behaviour, because they don’t understand that your dog isn’t ‘naughty’, they’re struggling to cope. Hi, I’m Krista and I he

lp empathetic and caring rescue dog guardians start to build their dog’s confidence and help overcome anxiety and fear-based behaviours. Start your path to enjoying your walks with your four-legged friend again. Back in 2014 I started a BSc Animal Science and Welfare Degree and became passionate about spreading awareness about the importance of ethical, kind and fun dog training and behaviour. Then in 2016, I worked in dog rescue kennels, caring for and rehoming ex-racing greyhounds. This opened my eyes to the world of rescue, where many of the dogs came with various behaviour issues from their pasts, which many dog guardians struggled with, meaning that many of the dogs were returned to the kennels time and time again. I knew then that I wanted to offer support to dog guardians to help them understand their dogs behaviour, so that we can then help the dog with their behaviour issues. I too have embarked on a journey with my own anxious rescue dog Max. Max had a very difficult start in life, coming from a puppy farm where he was neglected and suffered from parvovirus. Coming from such a stressful early life, Max has struggled with many anxiety and fear based behaviours including separation related distress, reactivity, and more generalised anxiety to new situations. Max has taught me so much over the past few years as I’ve learned ways to help Max to cope with his fear and anxieties. I know there are people out there who also experience heartbreak and frustration when trying to help their dog with their behaviour after a bad experience or rehoming a dog with a difficult past, and I am passionate about helping these dogs and people build trust and understanding to help support them through these issues. I believe that we’re never done learning, so I continue to expand my knowledge and experience with many courses and am currently studying for a MSc Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare Degree, so that I can help anxious dogs and their guardians to the best standard that I can. This journey has lead me to something really wonderful, where I work as a team with other like-minded dog guardians to help them to empower their dogs through empathy, understanding and communication. I now receive emails from rescue dog guardians:

‘Just wanted to let you know what amazing progress Juno has made with her reactivity on walks. We are delighted with how she is doing and can't thank you enough for your help.’

‘I can’t thank you enough for the advice you have given us already and the confidence boost which you have given me.’

It’s these messages that make my heart sing and inspire me to reach out to rescue and anxious dog guardians who are experiencing these same issues, that so many of us have gone through, to show them that it can get better. TPAW was established in 2017, but has evolved into a dog services hub for dog guardians, just like you, that want to learn and understand their dog, so that they can enjoy every moment spent together. If you are reading this and resonating with these struggles, please get in touch for support, empathy and empowerment for both you and your dog. To find out more about my services or to book, send us an email at [email protected] to arrange your free discovery call.

Often when we bring a new dog into our home, particularly if they’ve come from a stressful environment, they’re not quite themselves.
When dogs are in a high state of stress they will shut down.
This may appear to some as ‘calm and well behaved’.

After the initial settling in period, often known as the decompression period, the dog begins to feel safer and behaviours can emerge.
These will commonly be toward situations or triggers that your dog finds difficult, for example barking and lunging at unfamiliar people or dogs.

If the history of the dog is unknown this comes as a huge surprise to the new family and can appear as if it came from nowhere.
It is likely that your dog was feeling that way the entire time but didn’t feel safe enough to communicate that.

It can be confusing and frustrating but the good news is, now that you can identify your dogs areas of difficulty, you can work to make them feel better about them.

Our first week with Max was a whirlwind.

Bringing this stressed little dog home into a new environment was a huge learning curve.
We had set up the house with our biggest challenge in mind - making sure introductions with Percy would go as smoothly as possible.

It was tricky navigating what we expected from this new dog and what he could actually cope with, the behaviours he would display and what management we would need to adjust.

The hope was that Max could be crate trained for overnight that first night - NOPE.
I spent the night on the sofa with him on top of me as that’s the only way he could settle. After that he had the run of the kitchen as the crate had obviously been poisoned previously so would need a lot more work.

I hoped Max would travel nicely in the car on a dog seatbelt - NOPE. He chewed through it instantly and actually chewed through several leads.

I hoped I’d be able to leave him home alone in the kitchen - NOPE. He had to come with me anywhere I went until he was fully introduced and safe with Percy, as he couldn’t settle alone unless he had access to our bed or the sofa, and even then it took some work.

We hoped he would enjoy the garden - NOPE. He would instantly bark and jump at the fences and couldn’t be out there unless on a lead.

So we adjusted our expectations to the reality and met Max where he was. Overtime these issues have either become irrelevant or have improved with work.

Bringing a new dog home is exciting and rewarding, but it is HARD work. It takes a lot of patience and consistency.

⭐️ Manage your expectations.
⭐️Prepare to abandon plans a, b, c, d and probably more.
⭐️ Patience and kindness
⭐️ If in doubt, get the support of a qualified and experienced professional.

Bringing a new rescue dog into your home can be exciting but there is a lot to consider.

Finding the right dog for you.

Prepping your home for the new dog.

Knowing what to expect from that initial introduction and onward.

From working in rescue I've seen lots of beautiful dogs go to their forever homes, however I've also seen when it doesn't work out.
This can happen for so many reasons but often it's because of unrealistic expectations, not setting up the environment and dog to succeed, and the potential behaviour issues that can emerge.

A rescue pre-arrival consultation gives you the support of a kind, ethical and qualified animal behaviourist so you feel confident and prepared for bringing your new rescue dog home.

I myself know how it feels to bring a rescue dog home, and how overwhelming it can feel trying to ensure that you've considered everything to help the dog to settle in.
I wish I'd had someone to ask all my questions to and get reassurance that I was doing the right things before we got our dog home.

Training prep with our favourite high value treat Turkey Pate from 🐕

The pate is perfect for training because it’s 100% meat so is super palatable and as you can see you can chop it up super tiny.

In training the dog really only needs a little taste, especially important if you’ve got small dogs who may get full quicker.

For these more meaty treats we like to use our for easy access and easy cleaning!

And we’re back!

We spent the last few days away in a converted railway carriage for my husbands 30th birthday.. with Max of course.

It was so nice to have a few days away from social media and the whole dog world as it can be pretty consuming.

We were so impressed with how Max coped with everything - staying away from home, relaxing while we were in the hot tub (initially he wanted to join but soon realised he was better off snuggled up in bed haha), walking in new places and settling at cafes and pubs even around other dogs!

It’s a nice reminder of how far he has come and how much he can actually deal with, as it’s much easier to avoid situations he will find difficult. It’s been a good kick up the bum for me to make time to train Max around his triggers!

🐾 Dog Trainer- Training humans to speak dog 🐾

Shout out to for the best T-shirt, she knows me so well.
Canine body language is a huge passion of mine, i believe that all owners and professionals should learn how to read CBL for safety, relationship and confidence.

Did you know we teach canine body language both in person and online?

Confidence walk 28/10/23
We were joined by 4 dogs - Duke, Bramley, Vinnie and Bodhi - who all struggle around other dogs in one way or another.
With all 4 dogs on lead, with enough space and handlers all working on their reactivity skills… they all smashed it.

The dogs walked so well together, learning that nothing bad happened even though there were dogs around 🙌🙌

Building positive experiences around your dogs triggers in a low pressure way is the best way to change their underlying feelings.

Our confidence walks work as a great stepping stone for those that have worked 1:1 but need to proof those skills into more realistic settings.

Meet Foggy 🖤

This gorgeous little lady is a 13 week old Bedlington x Whippet.

We had our first session of our puppy foundations programme to help her get off to the right start and work on introducing separation in a safe and positive way as Foggy is struggling with being left at the moment.

Puppies are totally gorgeous but people do forget how overwhelming it can be, especially with the immense amount of information out there. Getting a qualified, experienced and ethical professional to help can give you the peace of mind that you need that you’re doing the right things to set your puppy up to succeed!

🤔🤨 Still scratching my head over this one...... and shout out to for shedding light on this in a reel - go watch if you haven't.

For a hot minute there, some aversive trainers were trying to claim they were using science in their training too *𝗲𝘆𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹*🙄 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘥𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺....but now there are folks actually saying science shouldn't have a place in training? Aside from that being utterly ridiculous and untrue for 𝙨𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙨. I want to know what these people are smoking and where the hell they pulled this half thought idea from.

There has been a 26% rise in dog bites since 2020.
There are a number of factors which have caused this but…

Bite prevention starts with education.

By learning to read dogs body language signals, you can spot signs that they’re feeling uncomfortable before they feel the need to escalate their behaviour to growling and ultimately biting. Giving them the space they need reinforces that they don’t need to bite to be heard.

World Mental Health Day 🌍

Having an anxious dog is really hard.
It’s especially hard when you struggle with your own mental health.

I myself suffer with anxiety, and my journey with Max has taught me so much about myself and helped me work on my own struggles as well as his.

So to all the pet parents out there making it through every day whilst also striving to make their pet feel safe, loved and overcome their struggles- I see you and you’re smashing it!

🐾 Unlocking Canine Minds! 🤔🐕

In a fascinating study by O'Riordan & Roth (2023), researchers dove into the world of rescue dogs 🐶 to understand how their behaviour and cognition differ from non-rescue pups. Using simple tests that dog owners could conduct at home, they aimed to understand the differences in cognition.

The results are in! Rescue dogs held eye contact for a shorter time but aced a memory test. They also showed more fear, shedding light on their unique experiences. 🙁 But their bond with their owners was just as strong! ❤️

This study opens doors to understanding our four-legged friends better and emphasises the importance of rescues. 🏡 Let's celebrate our furry pals this !

You’ve probably heard of the fight or flight response to fear.
Did you know there are two others called Freeze or Fool (sometimes known as fawn, flirt or fidget).

This is often missed as a fear response as it looks like the dog is excited or being silly.
A dog displaying these behaviours is experiencing exactly the same level of fear as a dog that’s running away or hiding or one that is barking and growling.

Learning to spot signs that your dog is struggling can help identify areas that they struggle with and prevent any potential bites from happening.

“Your journey won’t be the same as anyone else’s, so don’t let the world tell you what it’s supposed to look like”

When you have an anxious dog your goals are likely to be different to those of the ‘typical’ dog owner.

Someone else’s goals might be to train their dog to walk perfectly on lead - and that’s great, but it doesn’t mean you need to feel bad if it’s not yours.

Your priority might be for your dog to feel safe on a walk.
It might be for your dog to be able to feel relaxed in the house.

Max couldn’t go in the garden or walk from home without being completely overwhelmed 4 years ago. It doesn’t look cool or fancy but the fact that we can do these things with him now is huge.

You’re starting from a very different place from anyone else and your journey will reflect that.
Don’t let the world tell you you’re failing because your dog can’t do what others can.

Thank you Stuart & Debbie for such lovely feedback.
Seeing people get a deeper understanding of their dogs behaviour and putting in the work to help them feel safer and happier is the most rewarding part of this job.
Keeping dogs in loving homes was my reason for starting this job and it’s always wonderful to hear that I’ve helped facilitate that.
