Jo Poyner is one exceptional human being โค๏ธ.

I have had the absolute pleasure of working with Jo over several years during my time in rescue and I can honestly say that she is absolutely devoted to her dogs and puts every dog in her care before her own needs!

I hope you will join me in celebrating 30 years of Jo being so dedicated to those amazing rescue dogs?

Congratulations Jo, you are truly a hero for our rescues

Heroes like Jo, who is celebrating 30 years at Dogs Trust Kenilworth, help us go the extra mile for dogs every day ๐Ÿ’›

Over the years alongside various roles at the centre, Jo has welcomed many older dogs into her home, whether it's for a night, weekend or more, including those with serious health issues and behavioural challenges. Jo says harder times are worth it for knowing she gave an older dog the happiest closing chapter she could. We couldn't be more proud of team members like Jo ๐Ÿ™Œ Read more about her experience working with us: https://bit.ly/3xrMlM1

Thanks to support from players of People's Postcode Lottery over the past ten years, we've given over 100,000 dogs in our care everything they need until they head to their forever home. From Canine Carers helping dogs build on their skills and confidence to be adoption ready, or some extra TLC to those who need it with our foster carers, to finding them their loving new owners.

๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒž Today's Training and Behaviour consultations are cancelled ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒž

Due to the temperature reaching a high of 27ยฐ today and we are already at 21ยฐ, and with your dogs welfare paramount to myself, I will not train and/or walk dogs where I feel it is too risky and/or their welfare is compromised during these high temperatures.

Moving forward, I will assess each day and individual dog day by day and if warranted further consultations may be cancelled and a reschedule will be offered during these high temperatures.

I have contacted everyone that has been affected today and can I thank you all for being understanding and being responsible dog parents to agreeing with my decision!

I look forward to seeing you all very soon and please remember that although your sessions have been cancelled - please do not use that scheduled time to walk your dogs! It is just too hot!

๐ŸŒž Avoid the hottest part of the day and take them for a walk early mornings, before 8am or after 6pm if cool enough and where there is shade.
๐ŸŒž Watch out for hot pavements and do the 5 second test by holding the back of your hand or the base of your bare foot on the pavement. If it's too hot for you, or will definitely be far too hot for your dog.
๐ŸŒž Keep them hydrated at all times ensuring fresh, clean water is provided! Ensure metal bowls are out of direct sunlight as the metal can retain heat.
๐ŸŒž Take it slow! Practice some settle and/or calm training to prevent them from zooming around and over heating!
๐ŸŒž Avoid playing high arousal games in your garden - shade or no shade! No tennis balls, no fetching and definitely no running around.
๐ŸŒž Provided shaded and cool areas of your home where possible.
๐ŸŒž Provide some canine enrichments throughout the day to keep their mind occupied such as filled kongs, licki mats, apple bobbing etc

And if you need to pop out, leave them and home and not in the car!

And most importantly........

Get to know the signs of heat stroke and look out for them.

Any concerns please contact your veterinary practice.

Remember your dog can die from walking in this heat so please be mindful and put your dogs welfare first!

Last night we caught up with the beautiful 6 month old pup, Dexter!

Dexter is currently on session four of our puppy package and over the sessions we have so far worked on behaviours that include:

๐Ÿ’™ Puppy mouthing and not eating his mum's walls.
๐Ÿ’™ Overarousal and jumping behaviours especially around people entering his home.
๐Ÿ’™ Adolescent behaviours.
๐Ÿ’™ Lead training and focus work.
๐Ÿ’™ Preventing puppy resource guarding.
๐Ÿ’™ Learning to settle around people without jumping all over them.
๐Ÿ’™Plus much more ...

Dexter has come on so well and as seen in the photos, taken by his mum, is Dexter chilling and settling on his blanket whilst in the office full of people.

This behaviour is actually one that can be quite hard for dogs to achieve especially when there are many distractions present however with lots of patience, consistency, time and sticking to the guidelines Dexter is starting to learn how to be a little gem when he's at work!

A massive shout-out to his mum! It has not been easy to say the least as Dexter has pushed buttons - no matter how cute he looks! But his mum has solidered through every task and is probably one of the most patient people I have ever met โค๏ธ. Absolutely amazing work and thank you for trusting me to help you with your Kangaroo ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

You boshed his lead training yesterday too โค๏ธ

Looking forward to seeing you both in the next couple of weeks ๐Ÿ‘

We have been told by a couple of local vets that Kennel Cough has been confirmed in the area, an infection of the upper airways ๐Ÿ˜ญ

If you have noticed your dog has similar symptoms to a "human cold" such as dripping nose, sneezing, watery eyes and persistent cough, these are classic symptoms of Kennel Cough. The cough can just be a "dry cough" or a more extreme "honking" sound, each bout usually ends with your dog gagging or retching, or in more severe cases, coughing up phlegm.

Please let us know if your baby shows any signs of Kennel Cough as we cannot take them out on their group walks due to the extremely high risk of it being passed on. It is so, so important that you let us, as we unfortunately will not be able to take your baby out for their walks if we do turn up and they are showing any signs. We do understand that some of your babies are home alone but we just cannot risk this being spread. It is hard for the walker to leave your dog when they have turned up, and also quite confusing for your dog as they don't understand why we have turned up and not taken them anywhere.

All of our team are ensuring that all crates are cleaned between each walk and at the end of the day with disinfectant spray, and again at the end of the day we are ensuring all used towels/blankets etc are put to laundry.

It is spread from dog to dog through minute droplets of saliva or by contact with surfaces an infected dog has touched or been close to.

An infected dog can shed the infection for weeks, it can be picked up at any time of the year, from anywhere that brings your dog into contact with other dogs - such as the park, on their walks, of a stay in kennels (as the name suggests!). Symptoms will usually present themselves 3-10 days after exposure.

Yes, the simplest way to prevent it is through a yearly vaccination from your vets. This isn't normally covered as part of "yearly boosters" covered by Pet Plans, so do bare this in mind and pop a little money aside each year to cover this.

Although the vaccination is effective against 90% of strains, it does not totally prevent your dog from catching it. It does mean if they do happen to still pick it up though the symptoms will be a lot less severe for them.

It's very common and most dogs will suffer from it at some point in their lives.

The cough will usually last 1-2 weeks and most dogs will get better without any treatment. If your dog is older, has a weaker immune system or suffers with pre-existing heart/lung conditions it is worth seeking veterinary advice at the earliest opportunity to discuss a treatment plan.

It most cases it will clear on it's own. If your dog is persistently coughing for more than 3 days and not showing signs of improvement, it is best to consult your vet.

Try and keep your dog as calm as possible, giving them minimal or no reason to bark - barking will most likely lead to a bout of coughing!

Encourage them to drink lots of water. If you do need to take your dog outside, use a harness and not a collar so there is not tension on the neck.

When at home try and keep your baby in a well ventilated room and keep it smoke free.

Keep your dog away from any other dogs, even dogs within the home, and for an additional week after the coughing/symptoms have subsided. This is to ensure the infection has fully gone and will massively help to prevent Kennel Cough from spreading to the wider community.

Meet the trio of spaniels .... Poppy, Penny and Finn!

Poppy, Penny and Finns guardians recently took out our gold behaviour package as they were having issues introducing the two girls to their other family members - their cats!

Now spaniels are well rounded family pets however when you get a working bred line spaniel who is not given some kind of a "job" they can actually be a nightmare! As spaniels are very intelligent and thrive off working their brains into what they are genetically bred to do..... And that is to upland game birds and hunt rabbits, waterfowl etc!

Unfortunately, if our spaniels are not able to channel that "working energy onto something more appropriate they will start going all self employed by running circles around your home, garden and fields in aid of trying to seek out birds and/ or anything that moves but in these girls case.....it is the family cats.

We have had a couple of sessions where we have channelled their energy onto some gundog games and are in the process of changing previous habits however on our last session we were able to have one of the cats in view with both of the girls acknowledging the cat without feeling the desire to go and chase.

It is a long road ahead but their families are definitely seeing improvements ๐Ÿ‘

Please note that the family's cat had the choice to move away at any point and he had the whole top floor to move away too! The access to the cat was limited as a stairs gate was implemented at the bottom of the stairs and his dad was sitting close to him and rewarding him for also remaining calm ๐Ÿฅฐ

The beautiful Finn doesn't chase cats! He's just here for the rewards ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Yesterday we got to meet the beautiful Sarah for the second time and what a lovely session it was ๐Ÿ’™

Sarah's guardians reached out to me as they were struggling to move forward with Sarah's behaviours especially when it came to her seeing other dogs on a walk.

Sarah's past experiences of living in Romania meant that there may have been some experiences of protecting herself and her sibling from potential dangers such as us humans and as we don't know her full history we can only speculate that she has possibly encountered some not pleasant experiences with other dogs due to the severity of her anxiety.

Since arriving in the UK her guardians have given Sarah the best possible chance of a successful start to her new life! They have provided kindness, patience, resilience, emotional understanding, space, security, love etc ....and the list goes on! And she truly has started to blossom into a kind and gentle, beautiful girl โค๏ธ.

However, one thing that they were unsure about was how to help Sarah reduce her anxieties out on a walk and make it more pleasant and enjoyable for her instead of her reacting by lunging, barking and spinning on the lead, every time she came across a trigger.

There were few things for us to unpick and after providing a full behaviour report and training program from her first session, her guardians jumped straight in and cracked on with her training!

Yesterday we saw a massive improvement in Sarah's behaviour. Firstly, she did not react to me when I entered her home, in fact she approached me and on several occasions felt confident enough to pop over and have a couple of cheeky sniffs. ๐Ÿฅฐ

During her walks, she was overall less reactive but the biggest achievement was how relaxed she was and how she was able to sniff and take in her environment without constantly scanning her surroundings for dogs and people.

Changing behaviours is not an easy path, no matter what other trainers may advertise! And the biggest thing I always advocate is:

To change a behaviour you MUST change the emotion first!
..... And we saw just that with Sarah yesterday.

This week has been a busy one to say the least but on Wednesday I had the amazing opportunity to collect an award that I won as "Pet Behaviour Consultant Of the Year 2023/2024" and what an experience that was ๐Ÿคฃ.

Let's put it this way, I'm not a ball gown type of gal ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ.

Over the moon is an understatement on how privileged I feel to have been awarded this awesome award! But honestly, it is down to all you amazing people and absolutely gorgeous dogs that have given me and my business the opportunity to not only be considered for such a title but to only go a WIN it! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ.

Thank you so much!

What a way to end the week! ๐Ÿฅฐ

This morning, I headed off to Cheltenham to help a long term client introduce their dog, the beautiful Vizsla Amber with another family member's dog, Luna the lurcher.

Now, this wasn't just any old meet as both dogs show strong lead frustration behaviours and at times they can both make decisions that, if you like, gets themselves into trouble when around other dogs. That said, my client - Amber and her mum and dad have worked incredibly hard over the months implementing the behaviour and training plans that I have thrown at them session after session, without any complaints - and today just proved how far Amber has come along on her behaviour journey.
With the power of consistency, time, patience and daily training of overcoming hurdles you can just see that results can be achieved - no matter how long it takes.

I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to Amber and her family for entrusting me to helping them with their behaviour journey.

Thank you to the wonderful The Dotty Behaviourist for working with Luna and her mum over the weeks leading up to today and also supporting me in today's behaviour session.

And a massive thank you to Canine Acres dog walking field for enabling us to use their amazing facilities.

Two behaviourist working with each other to gain the same result! Teamwork at it's finest!

Meet Ellie the beautiful boxer ๐Ÿ’•

Ellie and her dad had their first behaviour consultation yesterday where we introduced some training exercises to help Ellie feel more settled when visitors arrive and more importantly, whilst her dad pops out.

Yesterday's session focused on teaching Ellie some alternative choices in what to do when she can't be in proximity to her dad whilst he is busy and we introduced the start of a relaxation program to help her become more relaxed for those times he does have to pop out.

I think it's safe to say that she had a great session and was quite happy to snooze after using her brain instead of her legs. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

The beauty of mental stimulation over physical stimulation ๐Ÿ’œ.

Today is - and also the day that the unsung heroes (rescue staff) should be celebrated too.

Working in rescue is not what I would class as your typical "job", in fact for me it was my life and one that I will be forever grateful to have had the experience of working in varying roles over my 16 year career. Honestly, the daily challenges that you face day to day has taught me so much and if it wasn't for those rescue dogs and amazing staff, I wouldn't have had the experience and the opportunity to now run my very own small and successful business today! - and I owe that to all the rescues out there.

Below I have pictured some of the dogs that I worked so closely from day to day and even though I no longer see them daily, they still leave a big hole in my heart ๐Ÿ’œ. Trust me, I have hundreds of photos but only selected a few ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ.

Feel free to show us your amazing rescue dogs too โค๏ธ.

19/05/2024

Yesterday was a busy old day for me as it varied from working spaniels and terries to visiting our local lake to help Finn, the border Collie progress with his dog reactivity.

However one of our morning sessions was catching up with the beautiful Nell.

Our initial assessment, a couple of weeks ago was helping Nell's guardians understand her emotions behind the reasons for her current behaviours especially around certain resources and also to help them manage her anxiety when other dogs step into her safety bubble.

However yesterday's session saw us go off topic slightly as Nell's energy levels have rocketed and her guardians were struggling to find a way to channel her "working energy" into something more appropriate as they are finding the more and longer they physically walk her, the more she just does not tire!

Sound familiar????

Did you know, you could be building an athlete in your dog??

The more you walk, the more you build up their stamina!

The best way to tire out any dog but especially those workers is to channel their energy, mentally.

So yesterday, we introduced Nell and her family to some gundog games where she could "flush" out her own toy whilst following the toys scent and we also introduced some natural scent training games too.

Nell had a fab time and was able to practice these games at the local woods, which also helped keep Nell more engaged with her mum and dad to be able to implement her training around passing dogs, which was a great success.

A great session

16/05/2024

Rescue dogs are a major part of my life and always will be, no matter where my career takes me but the ultimate downside to no longer working in rescue, is missing those beautiful faces that greeted you every morning, without fail! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™.

Rescue dogs need that little bit more patience and resilience from us humans as we never know their "true" background and therefore having to "second guess" their history can sometimes be a challenge especially when they exhibit those more complex behaviours at us.

Dealing with those more complex behaviours has its challenges at the best of times but trying to manage those behaviours in a rescue center setup, is one that no one will understand unless you have worked within those environments - and trust me, there are a lot of limitations that you can not put to into practice as you just don't have the resources like you do in a home environment, which makes it very difficult for some dogs to progress and find their forever homes.

This post is a shout-out to all rescue staff, no matter what animal they care for! Rescues come with challenges and can often take a detrimental effect on our mental health and well being. Staff always putting the dogs at the forefront of their mind, constantly thinking about the next challenges and how they can help that dog in question over come their current behaviours, missing coffee or lunch breaks because they don't want a dog to miss a walk or miss out on an opportunity of finding their home, days off are never a day off - well not for their minds anyway and ensuring each and every individual dog is well cared for emotionally and physically - the list goes on!

As you can see working in rescue is one of the hardest but most rewarding jobs out there and this post is a massive shout out to all of you hard working, passionate and bloody brilliant humans who are standing up and being a voice for those beautiful dogs.

โค๏ธ ๐Ÿ’™ Each and every one of you are amazing ๐Ÿ’™โค๏ธ

What an amazing afternoon yesterday was ๐Ÿคฉ .....

And I cannot tell you how proud I am of Lottie and her guardians! You are awesome ๐Ÿ˜Ž

You may remember a few weeks ago I posted a video of Lottie, starting out her behaviour journey on helping her feel more relaxed in proximity of a family friend., that her guardians wanted Lottie to befriend - if possible.

Lottie's immediate response upon seeing any stranger, including the family friend and myself was to demonstrate behaviours that reflected on her emotional state and unfortunately this often led to vocalisation as a way of her communicating to us humans to basically "go away". And of course, she learnt it works because her previous learnt behaviour was to bark at the stranger and the stranger increases their distance - go away!

Bingo!

So, Over their 5 sessions with myself, her mum and dad have worked tirelessly to help change Lottie's emotional state to enable her to make "better" choices in life!

This short video shows you just how far this beautiful girl has come and not only is she responding to her training well with me being in her garden but she is also learning to have their family present too. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ
...and I hope you agree she has "smashed it out the bag" ๐Ÿ˜.

Working with "reactive" dogs takes time and patience from both parties and our behaviour modification programs are tweaked and adapted according to you, your dog and your environment and this is exactly what we have done with Lottie! ..and trust me, Lottie threw some hurdles my way but we ALWAYS find a way to help you and your dogs!

Do you own a reactive dog and feel like you need further support? Why not drop me a message and we can arrange a discovery call for you.

Saturday we had the pleasure of seeing Zou and his guardians for his second behaviour session where they showed off the training they have implemented over the last week. ๐Ÿ’™.

Being a spaniel and like most breeds, Zou's fur tends to attract bits of brambles and sticky buds etc that seem to get tangled and cause a lot of tugging which often causes discomfort for him. Unfortunately, the tugging and pulling has caused a bit of discomfort in the past and now he has a negative association when his guardians attempt to remove them for him.

Here, we are teaching Zou choices!

Teaching him the choice to communicate with his guardians when he is comfortable for them to "go ahead" and remove the stuck bits of brambles by remaining on his yoga platform however, when Zou is uncomfortable and wants to tell them to stop and give him a break, he will move away and step off his platform.

We are only in the early stages of this program and have just introduced Zou to the cue "touch"! This means that before the guardians present their hand, they give the cue "touch" and see if Zou remains on his platform! If he does he is giving his mum and dad the go ahead.

He did so well especially with the heat that we had on Saturday! Well done ๐Ÿ’™

Just a reminder as the weather is getting warmer! ๐ŸŒž

As temperatures creep up over the summer period, I will be monitoring temperatures closely day to day and if I feel that it is too dangerous for us to continue training in such temperatures then a reschedule will be offered for another day.

You will be informed of any changes prior to your session.

Your dogs welfare and safety is paramount and I will always prioritise that over any training and behaviour session

Image description: An infographic lists ways to keep your dog safe in warm weather. 1. Walk your dog when it's cooler; early morning or late evening. 2. Ensure your dog has plenty of water and shade all day. 3. Do the tarmac test: if you can't comfortably hold your hand on the tarmac for five seconds, then it is too hot for your dog's paws. 4. Take extra care with flat-faced, overweight, unwell and older dogs. Exercise is the most common trigger for heat-related illness so take care not to over excert your dog.

Meet the beautiful Bud.๐Ÿฅฐ

Bud had his second behaviour consultation with me last week, as since him and his family have moved back to the UK from Cyprus, they have found it a bit challenging to manage Buds behaviour around other dogs.

Bud does have a history of being sociable and was fairly happy to spend some of his time in Cyprus running and playing with a group of dogs, however as soon as he is placed behind a barrier (his lead or the front window of his home) Bud becomes stuck in an emotional conflict and displays behaviours that have been unpleasant for his guardians to witness.

Last Tuesday's session was all about teaching Bud and his guardians on how to prevent an escalation in behaviour from increasing, managing those situations where they find it tricky to get out off and continuing to guide Bud through his behaviour and training programs, which he did very well with ๐Ÿ˜.

Another aspect of behaviour that we also have to consider is that whilst he lived in Cyrus he was amazing at alerting his guardians when there was a possible threat approaching and an example of this would be him alerting them of when a snake, yes a snake, was close by or in close proximity of him and/ or his family and as you can imagine that was a pretty handy and useful behaviour for his guardians. However, Bud still continues to demonstrate these learnt behaviours to what he thinks are our snakes, here in the UK......

GARDEN WORMS ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ
Bloody garden worms!

Let's hope we can teach Bud that garden worms are not a threat and he no longer needs to practice the behaviours of alerting his family when there is a worm present ๐Ÿคฃ.
